READ THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE ENTIRE PATTERN BEFORE STARTING THIS PROJECT!

Supplies Needed: • 5”x 11” piece of felt (wool or wool blend works best) • 5/8” ribbon • 1/4 yard of cotton for the apron • Scissors, pins, Fray Check or clear nail polish

• Bow Tie Shoes: • Cut the pattern piece out • Pin the pattern to the felt, I have already included seam allowances so no need to add them. • Cut out 4 shoe pieces. • Cut 4 pieces of ribbon 7” long each

• Most ribbon has a right side and a wrong side. I used the red ribbon to show a ribbon that does have a right and wrong side. The right side has polka dots and the wrong side is solid red. A lot of satin ribbons are shiny on one side and matte on the other. The gingham I used for the pattern looks the same on both sides. • Take one end of a ribbon piece and fold the end under about 1/4” with right sides facing. Stitch the fold in place. • On the other end of the ribbon, cut a ‘V’ shape. Finish the cut with clear nail polish or Fray Check to keep it from fraying. • Repeat for the other 3 ribbon pieces.

• It helps to do this step with two shoe pieces and two ribbons so that you make sure that you have a left side of the shoe and a right side of the shoe. • Pin the folded end of one ribbon to one of the shoe pieces. • Use the pattern piece and the photo as a guide for ribbon placement. • stitch 1/8” away from the edge along the entire top of the shoe piece, stitching the ribbon in place. This stitch will keep the ribbon in place and help keep the felt from stretching too much. • Repeat for all 4 shoe pieces.

• Here’s a close up of one shoe and ribbon after I stitched along the top of the shoe.

• Pin two shoe pieces together with right sides facing, using the photo as a guide. • Stitch 1/8” away from the edge from the back of the shoe all the way around the bottom and up to the top of the toes. • Repeat for the other two shoe pieces.

• Turn the shoes right side out and they are ready to tie on! • Since foot sizes and shapes differ depending on stuffing techniques of the individual sewer, some adjustments may be needed for a perfect fit. Felt is great for a little stretch and the ribbon will help keep the shoes on if they are a little big!

• For the Apron: • Print and cut out the apron bib pattern piece • Pin the pattern piece and cut two bibs. The seam allowance is already included. • For the : cut one piece of fabric 4.5”x 15” • For the straps: cut two pieces of fabric 1”x 11” • For the waist tie: cut one piece of fabric 1.5”x 22”

*It helps to have a rotary cutter and mat for this step but it is not necessary. You can still cut by measuring with a ruler and scissors.

• Making the Apron straps: • Take one of your 1”x 11” pieces of fabric and fold one of the long sides 1/4” over with wrong sides facing. • Press the fold down as you fold the strap to keep it in place.

• Fold the other long side over 1/4” with wrong sides facing. • Press the fold down as you are folding the strap to keep it in place.

• Fold the short end over 1/4” with wrong sides facing. • Press the fold to keep it in place.

• Fold the entire strap in half along the long side. The folded edges that you just made will line up. • Press the strap flat. • Stitch along the open edge to keep everything folded together. • Repeat the above steps to make your second apron strap.

*You can use pre-made bias tape for the straps if you want or you can use narrow ribbon instead of making fabric ones. It would be easier, especially if you are a beginner!

• Pin the apron straps to one of the apron bib pieces as shown in the photo.

• Lay the other bib piece on top with right sides facing so that the straps are in between the two bib pieces. • Stitch along three sides, leaving the side where the straps hang out open.

• Turn the bib right side out and press. • Zig zag stitch the bottom closed. • Top stitch 1/8” away from the edge on the other three sides.

• Take your skirt piece and hem the short sides • Fold the edge under 1/4” toward the wrong side of the fabric and press with your iron. Fold over again and press. Stitch in place to finish the hem. Repeat for the other side.

• Hem the bottom of the skirt using the same method you used above. • Use a gathering stitch across the top of the skirt. • Gather the top so it is 5” wide.

• Mark the middle of the skirt. • Mark the middle of the waist tie. • Pin the skirt to the waist tie with right sides facing, matching the middle marks. • Stitch in place using a 1/4” seam allowance.

• Fold over the short side of the waist tie 1/4” with wrong sides facing. • Press the fold in place • Repeat for the other short side.

• Fold the long side of the waist tie over 1/4” with wrong sides facing, starting with the side that has the skirt attached to it. • Press the fold with your iron to keep the fold in place.

• Fold the other long side of the waist tie over 1/4” with wrong sides facing. • Press as you fold to keep the fold in place.

• Fold the waist tie in half along the long edge, matching up the folds that you created.

• Mark the middle of the bib and the middle of the skirt. • With the wrong side of the skirt facing up, pin the bib in place, matching up the middle marks. • The bottom of the bib should line up with the bottom edge of the waist tie. See the photo for a reference.

• Starting at one end of the waist tie, stitch the open edges of the waist tie to keep the folds in place, catching the bottom of the bib in the stitch.

Sewing has always been a major part of my life ever since my Mom taught me how to sew at age 5. As a young girl, I always loved playing with dolls and stuffed animals (what girl doesn’t?), but only recently have I started to venture more into the designing of patterns for my creations.

Today, I’m a stay at home Mother to three wonderful children - Robbie, Abby, and Billy. Being able to sew has brought me so much joy over the years and the ability to make my own children some of the most wonderful toys, blankets, and clothes. It’s my hope that the art and joy of sewing handcrafted custom made goods continues to be passed from parent to child, especially given today’s culture of designer clothes and expensive toys.
