My second year as President of SANFLUA proved as challenging as the first however it was no less enjoyable. I’ve enjoyed the challenges and rewards that come with the honour and privilege of leading a proud and important Association.

It’s no secret that leading the challenges our members face, is our training facility. Improvements have been made, progress has been steady and it’s important we remain positive. On behalf of our members, it is my job to ensure information on our facility continues to flow. Whilst the brand-new facility is still 2 years away (best case scenario), we’ve finally seen light towers erected. The building that currently sits on the facility is being upgraded so that our trainers can adequately treat our umpires. This upgrade will see far cleaner facilities to use.

Pulteney still has its challenges with parking, lighting (moving between the ovals and South Tce and the School), oval condition and adequate goal posts for our goal umpires (particularly in the early part of the year) just to name a few. It’s important we stay united as a group and encourage new and existing umpires that aren’t members, to join our Association. The more members we have, the more voices we have.

2019 saw SANFLUA return a modest surplus and this was largely a result of a slight reduction in the cost of the Annual Dinner, a more measured approach to our social functions whilst maintaining a value for money offer to our members and a slight increase in memberships. This positive result is testament to the hard work of each of our committee members.

Our social functions remain an important cog in the function of our Association. Our events provide a great opportunity for all disciplines to come together in a relaxed and friendly environment. They help maintain the fun that Umpiring brings, away from the more serious approach of training and match day. I encourage members that are yet to attend a social function, to do so. I promise you’ll enjoy yourself. We’re working on our 2020 Social Calendar, ensuring we maximise every member’s opportunity to attend our functions. We’ll have this available after the AGM.

Once again, our Annual Dinner continues to be well supported. Your current committee strive for perfection and the background work before the night and then on the night itself, ensures the dinner runs smoothly and gives our members a night of celebration they deserve. The cost of the dinner on the Association continues to be discussed amongst the committee but there is no doubt the venue is a draw card and one we know our members love. We’ll continue to work with Adelaide Oval to keep the costs down. Congratulations to our 3 new Life Members , Kevin Wallace and Tony Symons. All of you are worthy additions, having provided outstanding service and support to SANFLUA over many years. To our award winners on the night, congratulations to you all. I’d like to acknowledge the fantastic support of Theron Philp, Mark Thomson and Abdul Alpaslan who continued to donate trophies for our Most Dedicated Awards.

We lost 3 Life Members in 2019. Lyall Phillips was inducted as Life Member in 1979, Ken Potts OAM in 1982 and Tony Cooper in 1987. All three-gentleman made great contributions to umpiring and our Association over many years. Ken Potts celebrated his 60th year as a member of SANFLUA in 2019, and this includes 19 years as Treasurer during his time on the committee. Ken was awarded a posthumous OAM for services to the community. My condolences to the families.

To our 2019 Grand Final Umpires, congratulations to all of you, across all four grades. Grand Finals are the result of hard work, dedication and determination. Congratulations also to all award winners on Golden Whistle night.

It would be impossible to achieve all that we do, without the continued support of our sponsors and supporters. Providing benefits to our members throughout the year, these valued businesses and individuals deserve all our support in return. Thank you to all of you. We hope you’ll continue to support SANFLUA and being a part of the development of Umpires in SA.

Your 2019 SANFLUA Committee consisted of Secretary Andrew Crosby, Treasurer Sean Burton, Social Secretary Terence Carter, Communications Officer Aaron Bennett, Publications Officer Mathew Wilson, Sponsorship Co-Ordinator David Sobieraj, Social Media Co-Ordinator Tom Sharpe, Website Co-Ordinator Matthew Norton, Statistician Steve Paunovic, Life Members Representative Craig Trewartha and Abdul Alpaslan. Our monthly committee meetings are always thorough, and we continue to have the best interests of our members and umpires at the forefront of any decisions we make.

As positions on the committee become available, I encourage our members to join and see what difference you can make to Umpiring. If it’s a commitment that you can’t make, but you have ideas on social functions or fundraising, please don’t hesitate to let the committee know.

Have a fantastic 2020.

SECRETARYS REPORT

Season 2019 was yet another successful and enjoyable year for the SANFL Umpires’ Association. While we were ‘one man down’ for the previous 12 months, we welcomed back experienced Goal Umpire and ex-SANFLUA President, Matthew Norton, back to the committee. This has been the least amount of movement in the committee for some time and this group of dedicated umpires certainly work as a ‘well-oiled engine’. I would like to reiterate my words from last year, that working with the gentlemen on this committee has been an absolute pleasure. The monthly meetings were very well attended, productive and enjoyable, with each member playing a valuable role in their respective portfolios.

Social events were again well-attended, and I would again like to acknowledge the tireless work that Terence Carter has put in for these events to happen. A large part of why the SANFLUA committee exists, is to create an avenue for umpires from all disciplines to socialise, co-exist and embrace the umpiring culture that has been paved by those before us. I believe it is important that all members make a genuine effort to attend these events where possible. Perhaps even make a suggestion to the committee if you have an idea for a future event?

Our website and social media presence has continued to increase rapidly, and I believe this has had a significant effect on our positive standing in the community. There were many ‘good news’ stories posted throughout the year, including milestone games, births, event photos, match appointments etc, as well as the acknowledgment of the passing of our valued life members. Membership details were able to once again be collected electronically when signing up. It is important that any change of contact details are passed on to the committee so that we can ensure the accuracy of our records. A great deal of thanks must go to Tom Sharpe and Aaron Bennett for their invaluable work and tireless dedication to the electronic media and communications area.

Since getting a makeover in 2017, our ‘Ball Up’ editions have continued to be an impressive publication thanks to Mathew Wilson. The amount of people that comment on how informative, interesting and professional this newsletter is, ceases to amaze me. He has once again ensured that 5 highly informative and entertaining editions were published! Each one was filled with several interesting articles covering all disciplines, photos from social events, upcoming dates, and my favourite, the ‘getting to know’ interviews. Ball Up is a fantastic way for all SANFLUA members to keep informed as to what is happening with our association, and I am sure that all members, especially our ‘non-running’ members, appreciate reading these fine publications. As a reminder, all past editions of Ball Up can be found on our website.

Another highly valued committee member I would like to single out for his tireless work is our statistician, Steven Paunovic. Appointed to this honorary position in 2016, Steven has since worked hard with several external parties to ensure the games records of all our Members are up to date and accurate, as well as assisting in acknowledging when significant milestones are reached. His dedication, attention to detail and passion for umpiring are key attributes that assist him highly in this role.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the 72nd Annual Dinner, which was again held at the magnificent Adelaide Oval. To be able to socialise with fellow umpires, young and old, while overlooking the most beautiful oval in the world is something we should not take for granted. It was fantastic to also see many tables with a mixture of past and present umpires happily chatting away and discussing the one thing that we all have in common…umpiring. The highlight of the evening is always the Life Membership presentation, and after many years of service and support of the SANFLUA, it was fantastic to witness the induction of Sam Hay, Kevin Wallace & Tony Symons. Congratulations to all other award recipients on the night.

Although it seems like many moons ago, I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Grand Final umpires, in all disciplines in 2019. We certainly did not harm our reputation in the public eye as a very professional, committed and hard-working group of young men and women. I hope that those that missed out on the final game of the year can strive to go one better in season 2020.

I would also like to acknowledge the retirement of my good friend, Theron Philp. 30 years of umpiring with the SANFL is an amazing achievement and his presence on the training track and on game day will be sorely missed. Theron finishes his umpiring career with 266 SANFL league games and was also recognised with the David Elliot award for Outstanding Service to Umpiring at the Golden Whistle awards night. For a current running umpire to receive this speaks volumes about the service he has given the SANFL umpiring over the years. Theron, thanks for your mateship over the years and enjoy retirement!

Finally, I would like to once again acknowledge the hard-working committee of 2019. Each and every member has volunteered their time to this group because they love umpiring in this state and want to see the SANFLUA flourish. As I mention each year in our Annual Report, I would urge all members to seriously consider jumping on board as a SANFLUA committee member, you will find it extremely rewarding and a lot of fun.

All the very best for Season 2020!

SOCIAL SECRETARY REPORT

20192 has been another good year for umpiring and for the SANFLUA.S We had quite a few social events on the calendar and mostm of them were well enjoyed by our members of all age groups anda also non-members who choose to attend.

ThanksT to The Gilbert Street Hotel (TGSH) for being our sponsors this yearye once again. With three After Match Catch Up’s put on at variousvarious stagesstages thisthis seasonseason thethe TTGSHG were quick to put on free nibbles, provide us with a section of the front bar, access to the Saturday night AFL game and also include some drink specials. These nights are always well attended so long as no Sunday SANFL games are scheduled the next day! Some of our younger more energetic members even manage to kick on into town afterwards!

I’d like to thank the Walkerville Bowling Club for hosting both our Lawn Bowls and annual Quiz Night this year. Lawn Bowls generally gets a smaller attendance with a more laid-back approach to it. The Quiz Night was again one of the best nights we put on. We had around 10 full tables again this year including members of all ages and disciplines; it was also great to see a table of non-members attend. We had various prizes on offer as well as our silent auction items that never last too long! Thank you to all the businesses that donated prizes for the Quiz Night.

Ten Pin bowling was again held at King Pin Norwood this year and we thank them for looking after us. Members received a free drink with their two games of bowling. This night is great for the younger members and really shows off the more competitive people involved. Unfortunately, numbers were a little down on this event this year due to mostly the Sunday games scheduled. Hopefully next year we will have less Sunday games to contend with!

The biggest and best social event of the year is always the Annual Dinner. Again, it was very well attended with so many Life Members coming, which is excellent to see. Held at Adelaide Oval it was a great night and the food was fantastic as usual! Well done to all award winners on the night. Also well done to the committee members who worked overtime to make this night happen.

The last social event on the calendar was the Grand Final After Party. This event is a great way to wrap up the year. Thank you to the Cathedral Hotel for hosting us and ensuring our Attendees received subsidised drinks. It was great to hear from some of the Grand Final umpires on the night about how they went in their games. Well done to those that managed to go out after proceedings concluded!

That’s it for another year and a massive thanks must go out to all my fellow SANFLUA Committee Members for helping make this year’s events happen as well as all Members, Life Members and Non-Members who came to events and engaged with us. I can’t wait for another season to start again next year!

Social Secretary SPONSORSHIP REPORT

2019 was a successful year for SANFLUA in regard to Sponsorship. The level of support we received from our Sponsors and Donors greatly assisted the Association’s social functions throughout the year, our quiz night and the SANFLUA Annual Dinner.

This year we saw a number of Sponsors and Donors who have supported SANFLUA for many years continue their association withwith us. We also saw a number of new Donors who offered their support to SANFLUA for the first time. Thank you to all of the businesses who have supported SANFLUA in 2019.

As we have been supported by the businesses mentioned below, I would encourage all SANFLUA members to support our Sponsors and Donors. They play a critical role in ensuring we can function and provide services to our members.

I would also like to acknowledge all members of the committee who have contributed to this portfolio throughout 2019.

COMMUNICATIONS REPORT

In 2019, the SANFLUA again set out to further engage with its members using its multiple avenues of communication such as the website, email and social media. One of our main objectives was to have the Association easily accessible, but also reliable for all of our members and life members whether based in Adelaide or afar.

SANFLUASA continued to explore options of informing members of upcomingitWithtbib events. With not being able to display messages and communications around Pultney, we again provided each member with a Social Calendar Fridge Magnet at the beginning of the year to take home, this made key dates easy to keep available. We also saw the introduction of a portable communication board which was located in front of our training base. We will be utilising this more frequently in 2020.

For the first time we offered the first 100 SANFLUA Members who signed up for the 2019 season a complimentary SANFLUA drink bottle. We thank Officeworks for providing these drink bottles to the SANFLUA at no expense to the association.

Apart from our regular news updates and milestone recognitions, we again saw the release of 5 brilliant ‘Ball Up’ publications which provided members with fantastic content covering all things South Australian Umpiring on each occasion. A big thanks to Mat Wilson on his hard work, passion and attention to detail in creating such a professional piece for our members to enjoy.

Members again this year were well informed leading up to each of our Social Calendar events and were able to RSVP and pay using our online RSVPify service. We saw great numbers at all of our events this year and I thank members for their prompt responses and feedback. Our events are always fun and it creates such a great opportunity to further develop friendships within our amazing group.

I would like to congratulate and thank all of our members on an enjoyable and successful 2019 season. Further to that I wish to recognise our Grand Final Umpires across the 4 grades and those who received awards at the Annual Dinner and Golden Whistle. Well done!

Lastly, I wish to thank my fellow SANFLUA Committee Members who have worked so hard in providing another brilliant year for the Members and Life Members of our Association. I look forward to working with you all again in 2020.

Aaron Bennett

Communications PUBLICATIONS REPORT

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Publications portfolio more so this year than any other. With many hours of work I was able to produce five editions that were distributed electronically to our Members, Life Members and Sponsors. Each edition was also uploaded to the SANFLUA website and promoted via our social media platforms.

After consultation with SANFLUA President Matthew Cummins at the start of 2019 my main objective was to make Ball Up a more professional publication and give it a much needed ‘facelift’. After some trial and error I was able to achieve the Ball Up’s new look with the inclusion of the SANFLUA Letterhead and Footer which included our corporate branding, logo, contact details and our social media links. The addition of the background images to suit the occasion such as Adelaide Oval for our Annual Dinner, Thomas Seymour Trophy for Finals Panels and an action shot of the particular umpire who had achieved a milestones was a well-received in addition to the new look of Ball Up.

The continuation of having our sponsors and valued supporters at the rear of each Ball Up was again very well received. The SANFLUA ensured our sponsors and supporters received a copy of each Ball Up publication. This provided the SANFLUA an avenue to thank them for their valued support and an opportunity to showcase SANFL Umpiring.

A particular highlight in 2019 was introducing the SANFLUA Statistics and Fun Facts alongside an umpire who had achieved a significant milestone. SANFLUA Statistician Steve Paunovic was fantastic in assisting me with all information. I couldn’t have done it without him. To SANFLUA Photographer Hannah Rexx from On The Ball Media I thank you for your assistance to not only increase our photographic catalogue of umpires but also help enabled me to lift the profile of the Ball Up’s. It would be remiss of me not to also thank every SANFLUA member who contributed to the Ball Up’s in 2019. You are all so willing to assist without hesitation. Without your support, the Ball Up’s wouldn’t exist. I am and always will be, extremely grateful for all your efforts to fill the pages of each edition.

To the Field Marshall, Boundary Bolter & Galloping Goalie I thank you for always giving a terrific insight into the inner sanctum of each discipline across the year. I stated in Ball Up #5 that for those wanting to know their identities you will find an ‘Easter Egg’ in an edition of Ball Up that gives away their identities. Good luck to those who want to work it out. Of course I will deny everything. That is the purpose of them being ghost writers.

In closing, I would like to sincerely thank SANFLUA committee members; Aaron Bennett, Abdul Alpaslan, Andrew Crosby, Craig Trewartha, David Sobieraj, Matthew Cummins, Matthew Norton, Sean Burton, Steven Paunovic and Tom Sharpe. You all contribute to the SANFLUA selflessly through your tireless work in your specific portfolios to ensure our Members, Life Members and Sponsors are always first and foremost.

It truly is an honour to be a part of a collective group who want to see the betterment of the SANFLUA and SANFL Umpiring.

I look forward to doing it all again in 2020.

Mathew Wilson

Publications SOCIAL MEDIA REPORT

In 2019, I took on the second year of our Social Media portfolio, and what a year it was! After finding my feet in 2018, the plan was to grow all areas of our online presence, and give our members the best content in a timely manner.

Again in 2019, there were plenty of milestones, both at SSANFL and AFL Level. Without going into too much detail, hihighlightsghligh were Mark Thomson reaching the 400 game mark at AFL level, Matt Konetschka umpiring his second AFL Grand Final, as well as Theron Umpiring his 500th match and retiring at seasons end. Well done to everyone on some amazing milestones. Instagram continued to grow, reaching 356 followers, up from 263 in 2018, and Facebook jumping from 800 followers to 983 in 2019! In all, all formats had more likes than ever before, and a lot of sharing of posts helped that. Our network continues to grow, not just umpires, but family and friends, which is fantastic as we are a family after all.

Our website (www.sanflua.com.au) has once again proved to be a popular tool for our Members and Life Members to receive information about us. A lot of our content is shared from the website and proved to be very popular. The Ball Up was again a huge success, with many life members commenting on how much they enjoyed feeling in the loop about what was going on with the umpires today. A huge amount of praise should go to Mat Wilson, for continuing his efforts to release multiple issues every year and with such quality content. Steven Paunovic continues his help with amazing statistics database, without him I would be lost and content would not be so timely.

The membership portal will continue to grow over the coming years. Members can continue to jump on our website and renew their membership and pay their fees all in a no fuss process.

If any of our members have any ideas they’d like to put forward regarding the website or our Social Media platforms, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Send any ideas to [email protected] and they’ll be passed on.

I’ve have really enjoyed the 2019 season with my fellow SANFLUA Committee members. We are a very passionate group, and everyone is always keen to help each other. This work mostly goes unnoticed by umpires, so I plead that if you feel like you can give back to the committee, please put your hand up and join this great bunch of people! Thanks to those who helped me throughout the year when I was interstate or overseas. Your assistance did not go unsighted and I wouldn’t expect anything less with the great team we have running the SANFLUA.

Thomas Sharpe

Social Media SANFLUA STATISTICIAN

In 2017, SANFLUA embarked on a long-term project to ensure all umpires were being counted correctly for the number of matches officiated. Due to some conjecture over time and an uncertainty aspect, I was appointed as the Association Statistician to begin work on this.

As part of SANFLUA, it has been my duty, and privilege since then to ensure all umpire statistics, in particular league games, are complete and up to date each round of each season, firstly running umpires, and more recently, work on historical or those recently retired. This has also branched out in all grades of SANFL Football. Collection of information on milestones, awards and other achievements for our umpires is included.

SANFLUA now has league match totals readily available to view for each League umpire, kept up to date on a weekly basis on the association website.

Over the past few seasons, I have been in contact with umpires to discuss, check, and ensure they are aware of what I do, and what they have in their profiles, and this will be ongoing. For 2019 in particular, I want to thank those who have assisted with the ongoing work involved, from sending old appointment sheets, to those who keep their own records, and also those who keep in touch with me regularly for late changes to appointments. Without this information, we cannot keep accuracy of the figures.

I want to also thank the SANFL History Centre, and Christine Halbert in particular for giving SANFLUA and me some of the resources to achieve what we have so far.

It has been a tough haul, ongoing, but fruitful to all those who utilise it.

If you have any queries in regards to the statistics, or profiles, you are more than welcome to contact me at your convenience. If we haven’t spoken, I’m always keen to crosscheck what I have with you.

Steven Paunovic

Statistician TREASURERS REPORT

2019 was a year of consolidation for the Association with another year being at our new training venue with limited facilities, but it is noted that there are four new light towers now operating. The result for the year for the Association was a surplus of $913 compared to a deficit of $2,967 in 2018.

The SANFLUA currently has a strong financial position with $15,583$ currently being held in term deposit with the Bendigo and AdelaideAdelai Banks on a 12-month term and returning 1.9% annually. Our cash account with People’s Choice Credit Union also has a balance of $7,970. This gave rise to net assets for SANFLUA of $23,554 as at 31 October 2019.

The surplus incurred in 2019 was due to a slight increase in membership fees but also driven by decreased annual dinner costs compared to 2018. The annual dinner was well attended and the cost per head was negotiated with the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority to be consistent with 2018 (being $115). The cost of the annual dinner in 2019 was $17,910 compared to $18,361. The cost of the annual dinner will need to be reviewed throughout the course of 2020 as if costs continue to increase the event being held at Adelaide Oval is not sustainable

An increase in membership numbers occurred during 2019 compared to 2018 resulting in membership subscription revenue being $15,150 compared to $14,708. The increase was driven by an increase in academy member numbers in 2019. The main source of revenue of SANFLUA is driven by member numbers and therefore the continued profitability of SANFLUA and number of events held on the social calendar is contingent on continuing to increase our member base including junior and academy umpires.

2020 will continue to present challenges to the Association with the training facility at Pulteney. The Association is working closely with the SANFL to ensure that an elite and safe training facility is being provided to our members and the current redevelopment of the old change rooms located on the ovals is a step in the right direction. The committee will continue to review the social calendar to ensure members to see their value for money from their membership. I would like to thank the Committee members for all their work undertaken during the 2019 year and I would also like to thank our Auditors for their ongoing support.
