KING CRIMSON Thursday 17Th and Friday 18Th November 2016 at the Opéra Garnier Monte-Carlo In agreement with Gérard Drouot Productions presents KING CRIMSON Thursday 17th and Friday 18th November 2016 at the Opéra Garnier Monte-Carlo King Crimson, a band which formed in 1969, is considered one of the most emblematic and influential progressive rock bands. The latest formation is very different to all the others the group has undergone, with Robert Fripp on the guitar, Tony Levin on the bass, Mel Collins on the saxophone, Jakko Jakszyk on the guitar and singing, and not one but three drummers (Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin et Pat Mastelotto)! Their latest album, "Live At The Orpheum", released in early 2015, was recorded on their previous American tour and gives a glimpse of this incredible new line-up. Fans who have been waiting for a new album since "The Power To Believe", released in 2003, will be delighted! Following successful tours in the United States in 2014 and in Europe in 2015, King Crimson is back and will be performing at Monaco on 17th and 18th November at the mythical Opéra Garnier Monte-Carlo for two event concerts! COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Though many examples of crossing over are identified, the examples used do not necessitate the creation of a new genre label, nor do they demonstrate the need for both genres to be combined into one. iii Contents Introduction………………………………………………………………………………… 1 Part One: The Emergence of Jazz………………………………………………………….. 3 Part Two: The Emergence of Progressive………………………………………………….. 10 Part Three: Musical Crossings Between Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock…………….... 16 Part Four: Conclusion, Genre Boundaries and Commonalities……………………………. 40 Bibliography……………………………………………………………………………….

ADDRESS PHONE NUMBER WEBSITE 500 W. Kilbourn Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53203 414.908.6000 MillerHighLifeTheatre.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sarah Maio [email protected] 414-908-6056 King Crimson Announce “Music Is Our Friend” North American Tour Dates 2021 King Crimson comes to the Miller High Life Theatre on August 31, 2021 MILWAUKEE – (June 7, 2021) – The Miller High Life Theatre and Alternative Concert Group are proud to welcome King Crimson with special guest The Zappa Band to the Miller High Life Theatre, August 31, 2021. Artist VIP presale is June 9 at 11 a.m., and venue presale is June 10th at 10 a.m. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, June 11 at noon at the Miller High Life Theatre box office or Ticketmaster. When King Crimson returns to action this July, it will be the seventh year that the band has toured since returning to performing live in 2014, a run only interrupted by the lockdown in 2020. In that time, the audience has been reinvented, as much as the band itself, something Robert Fripp noted after the band’s performance in Pompeii, Italy’s famous amphitheater: “In Pompeii, a large percentage of the audience was young couples; KC moved into the mainstream in Italy. I walked onstage knowing that this band's position in the world has changed level.” - Robert Fripp The band’s shows regularly include material from twelve of their thirteen studio albums, including many songs from their seminal 1969 album In the Court of the Crimson King, described by Pete Townshend as an “uncanny masterpiece.” The 7-piece line-up play many historic pieces, which Crimson has never previously played live, as well as new arrangements of Crimson classics – “the music is new whenever it was written.” There are also new instrumentals and songs, as well as compositions by the three drummers, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison and Jeremy Stacey, which are a regular highlight.

KING CRIMSON – 01.

2 Another happened last year when the Rolling Stones dragged Mick Taylor away from undeserved obscurity, and played a series of barnstorming gigs including Glastonbury Festival, and another is going on at the moment and started last night. King Crimson have been, unarguable, one of the most idiosyncratic and artistically interesting bands for forty five years now, since they formed in 1968. Leader Robert Fripp left the music business some years ago, and King Crimson seem to have been on indefinite hiatus since about 2008. However, last year Fripp announced that the band will return, and this week, the new seven piece line-up played their first shows. The silence surrounding these shows is deafening. I spoke to Jakko Jakszyk who is the second guitarist and vocalist with the new King Crimson, last week on Facebook. He was understandably cagey about Dear Friends, what was happening. I asked how the rehearsals were going, and he said that they seemed OK but Welcome to another issue of the Gonzo Weekly. told me to ask him again after they had done a show or two. We are always being told how the music industry is in crisis and how record sales are plummeting. • King Crimson – Live in Chicago
Schlagzeugern bedeutet.

  • Davide P Artical
Davide Piovesan Davide Piovesan is the man behind the drumkit for the first two Ephel Duath albums released on Earache Records: The Painters Palette (2003) and Pain Necessary to Know (2005). It is rare for a band to achieve an authentic marriage between jazz and metal. Jazz, in its elegance of tone and dynamics, can often clash with the harsh aesthetics and production of heavy metal. Ephel Duath, however, had indeed achieved such a blend of seemingly disparate musical styles. The importance of a drummer who can skillfully execute both cannot be overstated. What follows is a series of questions based on Davide Piovesan’s time in the band, the writing process and pushing the stylistic envelope. Q: Early Ephel Duath was quite different from the material that followed. What were your first impressions of the band? A: When I first met Davide Tiso, I didn't even know the band already existed. And I wasn't very interested in what they did before, to be honest. I listened to their older music only much later, after our first album was recorded. Tiso's style was clearly recognizable, but the abundance of "techno" stuff was not really exciting to me. Tiso was strongly demanding a totally different sound and instrumental intention. A complete 180, if you will. Q: What were your impressions of the music Davide Tiso was writing when you first joined? A: Davide got my phone number from a guitarist (maybe also his guitar tutor at the time) who had played in a jazz fusion band with me several years before.
