One-Month Research Fellowships in Colonial and U.S. History & Culture for 2003-2004 These independent research libraries will award approximately 30 fellowships for research in residence during 2003-2004. Adjacent to one another in Center City Philadelphia, these complementary collections support research in colonial America, the United States, and the Atlantic world from the 1 7 'h through the 19dI centuries, as well as Mid-Atlantic regional history to the present, including immigrant and ethnic history. The Library Company's collections (500,000 volumes) span early Ameri- can print culture, including books, pamphlets, and magazines from all parts of the country, Britain and the Continent. The Historical Society's archives (18 million items, now enriched by the holdings of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies) document the social, cultural, and economic history of a region central to the nation's development, with new strength in ethnic and immigrant history. Both collections are strong in African-American and women's history, popular print culture, newspapers and printed ephemera, and images of the Philadelphia region.
