Fall 2011 FORECAST Magazine 3 New Divisions, New League Lineups & New Coaches for Lorain County Football

By Jim Allen Avon Lake and North Ridgeville have moved up from Division II to Division I this sea- son. The Shoremen have missed making the playoffs only once this century, in 2006. In nine of the ten years they did make the Division II playoffs since 2000, Avon Lake had more than enough points to have qual- ified had they already been in Division I. Three all-county players return for Avon Lake, which has put together a county record 19 straight winning sea- sons. Back are tailback Dontez Smith, who scored 48 points last year, offensive tackle Mac Wightman and defensive tackle Jake Young.

North Ridgeville could have qualified in Division II last year if not for a pair of narrow losses. The Rangers return David Bow- den who finished with 57 points along with Christian Watkins who scored 48 points in addition to winning all-county honors at defensive back. The other 3 Division I squads in Lorain County will have new head coaches. Chad DiFranco has been elevated at Amherst. The pay-to-play pro- gram is not a new concept. It began in the 1970’s and spread quickly in the 80’s and ‘90’s as school fiscal budgets began to tighten. Let me clarify though, technically it’s pay-to-partici- pate. Not, pay to play. You are not guaranteed playing time because you paid money to put on a uniform. With that said, there is a difference between pay-to participate and self funding athletics. ‘Pay-to par- ticipate’ plans normally receive a supplemental money stipend from a school board where as ‘self funding’ is just that – financially separate in most cases and made possible by player fees, fundraisers and donations. The team is hoping the young D-line of Ahtyba Rubin, Taylor, Sheard and Brian Sanford can do enough to give a helping hand to linebackers Scott Fujita, D'Qwell Jackson and Chris Chris Gocong. Ward and Joe Haden are two dynamic young players at the safety and corner spot, and teaming up with them are Shel- don Brown and a player to be determined, as free agency will play out as to who starts at the free safety spot opposite Ward. It will be up to these core guys to stop drives, as at least for this season it appears quarterbacks are going to have time to throw while the defense finds itself in Jauron's first season at the helm of the unit. This is a young team that many feel are going to have serious issues being competitive in a tough AFC North. The Browns may be on par to be as good as if not better than the Bengals, but matching up with the two top dogs of the division in Baltimore and Pittsburgh is a different story. The Ravens beat the Browns 24-17, and 20-10 in two games a season ago, while the Steelers, who made it to Super Bowl XLV before losing by five to the Green Bay Packers, beat the Browns in their two meetings 28-10 and 41-9 in the Browns regular season finale. It was less than 24 hours later that Mangini was dismissed and again a new era of Browns foot- ball had started. Even though I don’t participate in plays on the field ... it’s never boring to me.

For the past 30 years I’ve enjoyed watching Lorain County’s young athletes learn skills on the field that will be with them all through life. I also enjoy watching an injury free game, but accidents do happen, and that’s why I am here. Dr.M.C.KolczunII

Kolczun II – Class of 1999 Lorain County. Often, sports injuries are nothing more than “a bump or a bruise,” but for those instances that require special orthopaedic care, it is reassuring to know that Cleveland Clinic Orthopaedics/Lorain is currently the most advanced orthopaedic sports injury facility in the state. Ofcourse,Ihopeaninjuryisnotintheathlete’s future. But if an injury does occur, I’m on the sidelines when you need me.
