STRONG ONE-TWO PUNCH THIS SIDE UP: HONORING THE MAN WHO CRACKED THE DERBY CODE by Chris McGrath FOR BAFFERT IN SAN FELIPE He's out there right now, hiding in plain sight. Very possibly running today; otherwise, last weekend or the next one. Yet even from the few animals retaining real credibility--by now perhaps no more than three or four dozen--not many of us would feel terribly confident about naming the 146th winner of the Kentucky Derby. So let's just take a moment to reflect again how extraordinary was the man who was able to sieve the 142nd and 143rd winners from crops of 11,000-12,000 (and that's just colts) foaled in North America in 2013 and 2014. The abrupt death of Gerry Dilger, at just 61, is a savage shock to our community. He wasn't even one of those guys you only really appreciate when they're gone. Nobody needed the jolt of bereavement to know how indispensable was that beady Irishman among the Bluegrass cast of characters. Sole Volante | SV Photography by Christina Bossinakis Moving from strength to strength since kicking off his career last October, Sole Volante (Karakontie {Jpn}) has been tabbed the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday=s GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby. A winner on the turf in his first two starts last season, including the Pulpit S. at Gulfstream Park Nov. 30, the gelding finished a credible third in the Jan. 4 Mucho Macho Man S. and later in the month, Reeves bought a majority stake in the Triple Crown prospect, joining owners Andie Biancone and Limelight Stables Corp. Trained by Patrick Biancone, Sole Volante went off the third choice at 5-1 in the Tampa Bay Derby prep--the Feb. 8 GIII Sam F. One of the early favorites leading up to last weekend=s GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream, Mucho Macho Man S. winner Chance It (Currency Swap) never made it into the lineup when his connections, not anticipating more than eight horses in the field, opted to scratch after drawing the outside 12 hole in the 1 1/16-mile prep for the GI Florida Derby. More favorably drawn in post four in the 12-horse Tampa Bay Derby field, Chance it will be ridden by Paco Lopez for the first time. Godolphin=s Spa City () makes the jump from maidens to graded company for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who recently announced his decision that he will be stepping back from training in favor of becoming the agent for jockey Luis Saez Apr. 1. An even fifth in his career debut going six furlongs at Gulfstream Dec. 21, the bay was an improved second while trying a mile at the Hallandale oval Jan. 11. Appreciating the added furlong for his latest start Feb. 8, Spa City came from just off the pace to score by a length. AWe liked him a lot from the start,@ recalled McLaughlin. AWe ran him the first time and it was too short for him and he ran fifth and then he was second. He=s a big colt, close to 17 hands, and wants to run all day. Last time, we ran him back a little bit quick but he was impressive. We think he=s a really nice colt so we=re going to step up with him.@ Explaining the decision to go to Tampa rather than remain locally, McLaughlin said, AIt=s because of the timing of the [Tampa Bay Derby]. He ran so well last time, and it was a bit fast, three weeks to the Fountain of Youth, we really wanted to give him four weeks in between races.@ McLaughlin added, ATampa is a kind surface, and it=s a little bit sandier, and it seems horses handle it pretty well. Also, having speed is a plus at Tampa, so we think it will suit Spa City.@ When asked about the sophomore=s Classic chances, McLaughlin said, AHe=s a large colt with a big stride and a great mind and he just does everything right. We=ll try to go that route and if he takes us there, great, and if not, we won=t force the situation. But he=s done everything right so far and we=re excited about his future.@

We all know horsemen whose eyes disclose the icy detachment on which their shrewdness is founded. But Gerry's were no less warm than they were acute. For everyone who knew him, everyone who cherished him--and these are essentially coterminous groups--it's going to be a long time before we become accustomed to going through the barns, at any major sale, and somehow never finding Gerry. There will, of course, still be many other seasoned horsemen around, who will be just as generous with their experience and counsel. But it's going to be like instinctively leaning on a shedrow rail, as somewhere secure to rest the weight of our concerns or questions, only to pitch forward into an unexpected void. We'll get up, dust ourselves down. But it'll happen at the next sale, too. Happily, that personal legacy, in the memories and affection of his peers, will also endure among those who never met Gerry; in the annals of a sport that will forever marvel that an operation as modest as Dromoland Farm should have pinhooked Nyquist (Uncle Mo) and co-bred/raised Always Dreaming (Bodemeister). How does something like that happen? Gerry, needless to say, ascribed it to pure luck. "I'm no better than the man next door," he insisted. "I got lucky. Put it down to hard work, whatever, but I got lucky. I'm no better than any of my buddies in town." These will hear exactly the tone in which Gerry spoke those words. Not a quiver of false modesty. Instead, something closer to outrage than astonishment, that fate should have favored him in such a way that people he esteemed might be invited--at least by those who knew no better--to look up to him in some way. The reality, of course, is that they all did so already. They didn't need this blaring signpost to the genius he had absorbed from horsemen of the old school ("herdsmen", he called them) like his mentor Tony Butler. No manuals, no systems, no software. Just an instinct developed through long exposure--day and night, sleet or sun--to the mute, infinitesimal signals legible in a horse: in its manger, or the condition of its hide, or merely its way of standing.

"I was shocked to learn about what was happening to so many racehorses," said Meredith. "It broke my heart so I bought a few acres of land and started to save as many as I could. For years, I paid for the operation out of my own pocket until 1994 when I started the foundation." Over the past 25 years, Meredith has had to move the horses to different locations depending on finances and availability of good property. Because her operation is a sanctuary, the UPF board prefers to own it farms. Helen Meredith One adjective that comes to mind when thinking of the trajectory of Meredith and UPF is nimble. With what seems like pure grit and a handful of loyal board members, she has weathered tumultuous times and come through with grace. Meredith is revered as a strong and consistent voice for the Thoroughbreds that retire unsound and cannot make it in second careers. "I have a special place in my heart for the racehorses that are not sound enough to be retrained," said Meredith. "We have horses like Bordonaro (Memo {Chi}), who earned $938,128 in 20 starts, and some that earned more. And, we have those who never made the board. They are all special to us." "UPF has helped establish the bar for Thoroughbred horse rescues by addressing aftercare reality," said Snyder. "Not every horse can go on to a second career and those with Helen that are permanent retirees enjoy a full and active life with similar horses, while at the same time maintaining the dignity and respect for the breed."
