Arktikum is a science center and museum that lets you experience northern nature, culture, and history up close. Housing the University of Lapland’s Arctic Center and the Regional Museum of Lapland, we stimulate thought, encourage debate, and provide a deeper understanding of the Arctic.

Korundi House of Culture is one of the most significant cultural destinations in Rovaniemi. The Rovaniemi Art Museum and Lapland Chamber Orchestra also operate in this wonderfully modernized and historical building. Rovaniemi Art Museum sets its main focus on Finnish contemporary art and Northern art. In its yearly exhibition program the museum introduces works from artists who whether work in North or are born there. The exhibition program also includes exhibitions from the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation Collection as well as some interesting insights into Finnish and international contemporary art.

An optional hiking trip to Ounasvaara. It’s easy terrain, but mostly uphill road. Once we get to our destination there is a lookout –point over to Rovaniemi. Bring your own snack and enough water! There is also an opportunity to cook sausages etc. since we can do a campfire over the Laplander’s hut.

Personnel’s most important mission is to support children’s growth and development together with the family. In collaboration with the parents, a children’s early childhood education plan (VASU) is created. The plan sets goals for the group action. Activities are evaluated a few times a year with parents. In education, we take the children as individuals and guide them to respect and to tolerate each other. Every group in the nursery has children with immigrant backgrounds and those with special needs.

Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos is the largest conference and events venue in northern Lapland and serves as a centre for Sámi self-governance, culture, education and know-how.

The Sámi Parliament (Sámediggi) is the self-government body of the Sámi, legislated at the beginning of 1996. Its main purpose is to plan and implement the cultural self-government guaranteed to the Sámi as an indigenous people.

The exhibitions of Siida deal with the history and culture of the Sámi and nature in the northernmost Lapland. Multicultural Women’s Association, Finland, is a nationwide multicultural women’s NGO operating in the field of social affairs. It promotes the equality and inclusion of immigrant women in Finland and prevents violence against women. The Association acts as an expert and does advocacy to improve the status of women, as well as supports immigrant women’s activities through its member organizations.

Work against violence in MONIKA provides support in several languages, and is specialized in types of violence that affect immigrant women in particular, such as honor-related violence.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Here is some important information for you in order to make your stay in Rovaniemi and participation in the International Summer School as smooth as possible. The Summer School programme begins on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 8:30am at the University of Lapland (address: Yliopistonkatu 8, lecture hall 3). As a summer school participant you are required to follow the Summer School programme. Agreeing to participate in the Summer School means making a commitment to adhere to the time schedule, attend the lectures and participate in the workshops.

ACCOMMODATION IN ROVANIEMI

Hostel Café Koti (Address: Valtakatu 21)

Hostel Café Koti is situated right in the city center of Rovaniemi. Rooms have their own bathrooms and light breakfast is included in the private room price. There is an equipped kitchen, a cozy relaxing area and also a genuine Finnish sauna at guests use.

Café Koti offers great coffee, drinks, pastries and food in an easygoing atmosphere. Breakfast is also served daily and lunch during the weekdays. Social events are held in the café on selected evenings. Art exhibitions are also shown at times.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Transport connections to/from Rovaniemi airport

Yellow Airport Bus, which we recommend, is on stand-by for aircraft arrivals and carries passengers to and from Rovaniemi town and surrounding areas. Fares: 7-12€/person. Airport bus stops at every hotel. For more information call +358 16 362 222, http://airportbus.fi/?language=en

Local taxi service You can take normal taxi from the airport to town, but it is more expensive, approximately 25€/taxi. The number of local taxi is +358 200 88 000, http://www.rovaniemenaluetaksi.fi/en

Bus from/to university and city centre Buss no 4 drives every 30 minutes from the University to the city centre and from the city centre to the University. The bus stop is right in front of the University’s main building. In the city centre the bus leaves from Ruokasenkatu.

Bus no 8 drives from the railway station or the city centre (from Ruokasenkatu) to the Village. Santa Claus village is open every day at 10–17.

You will find that there are nice sidewalks all over the city of Rovaniemi and the destinations from one place to another are not that long.

COFFEE AND LUNCH

Coffee and lunch are not included in the summer school programme. Breakfast, lunch and coffee are available in Restaurants Felli and Petronella or Café Lovisa from Monday to Friday (Petronella on Saturday also).

Restaurant Felli is open Monday - Friday 7.45 – 16.00. Breakfast is served 7.45 – 9.30. Restaurant Petronella is open on Monday - Friday 9.00 – 20.00, Saturday 11.30 – 20.00. Café Lovisa is open Monday - Friday 7.45 – 14.30.

The Summer School participants will get a discount lunch in restaurants Felli and Petronella and in Café Lovisa. You need to wear your name tag and show it to cashier to get the discount. Felli and Petronella have several different kind of dishes and the price is 5.75€. There is also various vegetarian options. One meal includes salad, bread, drinks and one kind of main course. Please notice this when taking food. Lunch in Café Lovisa is 5.50€. Lovisa has two or three dishes every day, including vegetarian and salad options.

ACCESS TO INTERNET AT THE UNIVERSITY

You can use internet in two ways:

1) Computers at university lobbies have access to internet. No password needed. 2) WIFI network: Guest password: ulaplandguest

TELEPHONE AND GROCERIES

If your mobile phone can’t make international calls, prepaid SIM cards can be bought from several R- kiosks and shops. There are no public phones in Finland.

There’s a small grocery shop (Sale) opposite to University’s main door. Supermarkets Prisma, K- supermarket and Lidl are located 1,5 km from the University. A pharmacy is located inside the K- supermarket. In the city centre there are several smaller shops and bigger supermarkets to purchase food and beverages. Pharmacy is inside the shopping centre Sampokeskus.

RECYCLING

In Finland we recycle all our bottles and cans. So please make a notice of this and don’t throw bottles and cans in normal trash bins! You can take the bottles etc. back to the grocery stores and you’ll get 0,10 - 0,40€ back from each bottle. The amount depends on the bottle size. Or if you don’t want to take the bottles back, please leave them at your hostel room.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

Welcoming party Welcoming party will be held at the University (lecture rooms 20 & 21) on Wednesday May 22nd at 18–20. A welcoming party is a great opportunity to get to know the other participants of the summer school in an informal way.

International Evening International Evening will be held at the University (lecture rooms 20 & 21) on Friday May 24th at 17.30–20.

During the International Evening, each country represented in the summer school has an opportunity to share something about their culture. Your presentation may include history, arts, geography, language, traditional dress, customs, or anything that you would like others to know or experience. In past years, for example, participants have sang, shared food, music, worn traditional clothing, showed photographs, taught dances, language and games that helped us learn something about the different countries represented. Atmosphere is informal and fun (no lectures).

Pot Luck Dinner A pot luck dinner will take place on Monday May 27th at 18–20.30 in lecture rooms 20 & 21. Everyone is encouraged to bring food and/or drinks from their country to share with others. This is also an informal get-together.

PROGRAM DURING 29.5-31.5.2019: EXCURSION TO KEVO, UTSJOKI

Kevo, Utsjoki

Departure from the University of Lapland main door is on Wednesday 29th of June at 07:00 am. Participants who are staying in Hostel Rudolf and Hostel Koti will be collected at 7:10 am. Please be on time!

Participants who will stay at the Hostel Rudolf after the excursion can’t leave their things in their rooms. You have to check out of hostel before we leave and then check back in after the trip. There’s a luggage room in Hotel Santa Claus reception if you don’t want to take all your luggage with you to Utsjoki.

Participants will live in shared cabin or rooms in Utsjoki. The accommodation facilities are very basic. Towel and sheets will include in the housing price. Please provide yourselves with comfortable and warm clothes and shoes for spending time outdoors, in nature. For example sneakers might get wet on nature trails. Utsjoki is situated in the far north and it can be cold even in June (0 - +10 C degrees).

The overall cost of the excursion is 150 €. This includes all meals, accommodations, transportation, entrance tickets etc.

The total cost will be paid to University’s main cashier on Thursday 23th May after workshops. You can pay with cash or credit card.

EXCURSION TO HELSINKI ON 1.6.–5.6.2019

Saturday 1st of June is arrival day to Helsinki when you also need to check in to a hostel. There is no timetable for this day so you can choose your schedule and ways to travel freely.

Travelling to Helsinki:

Finnair and Norwegian airlines fly from Rovaniemi to Helsinki. For more information go to www.finnair.com or www.norwegian.com

A train journey to Helsinki takes 8–10 hours and a railway ticket costs 80-100 €. Group discounts and “early bird”- prices are available. More information: www.vr.fi/en.

Travelling in Helsinki

We recommend purchasing a 3 day-card for public transportation in Helsinki. With this card you can use public transportation as much as you want. The price for this card is 16 €, cards can be purchased from R-kiosks, tourist information in Helsinki city, at the airport and at the machines inside the metro stations.

Students will be accommodated in shared rooms for three or two persons. Each room has its own shower, toilet and kitchenette with a fridge. Lecturers will stay in single rooms. Prices include bed linen and towel, morning sauna and swimming.

From the airport: a) Take a Yellow Line airport taxi to our hostel (1-2 persons total 29,50 €). At the airport contact the Yellow Line service desk to arrange it. The service points are located in the arrival halls and are open from 06.00 am to 1.30 am. b) Take a regular taxi to our hostel (approximately 45-55 €). c) Take a P or I train from the airport to the Central Railway Station (5 € per person). d) Take a Finnair airport bus to the Central Railway Station (6,30 € per person). e) Take a regional transport bus 615 or 620 to the Central Railway Station (5 € per person).

From the Central Railway Station: a) Take a tram number 2 towards “Nordenskiöldinkatu” in front of the Central Railway Station. Our tram stop is called ”Kauppakorkeakoulut”. It is the third stop from the Central Railway Station. The tram turns to the right, but keep on walking straight ahead. Turn left to the street called “Lapuankatu” and walk down the street until you reach “Hietaniemenkatu” street. Turn right and walk along “Hietaniemenkatu” street until the end of the street. Hostel Both is on your left.

16 b) Take a metro towards “Ruoholahti” and get off on the next station called “Kamppi”. Take the escalator going up to the exit on “Runeberginkatu” street and turn right. Walk along “Runeberginkatu” street until you reach a roundabout. From the roundabout turn left on “Hietaniemenkatu” street and walk until the end of the street. Hostel Both is on your left. c) Hostel is also easy to reach by foot.
