ACM 372 EDITING, Instructor: George Wang ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES & AGREEMENT Assignment #2 Narrative Editing (A): EDITING A PRIMETIME DRAMA (20 points = 20% of final grade) OBJECTIVES: You will have the rare opportunity to edit a selected segment of a network primetime drama. Your goals- Creatively, as the editor, you view all the footage, take notes, select the best takes and angles and make all the crucial decisions for the best way to construct and tell the story. Technically, your final edit should appear as professional as possible. REQUIREMENTS: 1. There's no limitations on how you can use the footage provided. You may use the filmed plot, or you may alter the structure and story if you wish. If incomplete-extra footage from other scenes are included, you do not have to use them, unless you want to experiment with ways to incorporate. 2. You must add appropriate Music and/or Sound Effects (or –1 point). Please include Music/Sound Effects source information in the credits (during title or end). If you are the composer, or you recorded the effects on your own, please use your alias in the credits. 3. If there's burnt-in time/keycode info on the footage, you must cover such info with a letterbox matte (widescreen matte filter, at 16:9 ratio or 1.78:1), and when necessary, adjust the letterbox offset for proper composition. (or -1pt) 4. You must add title and credits. (or –2 points). You may invent your own show title, but don't alter name of cast/crew. Please obtain from IMDB.com or from other resources: the cast/crew information of the provided footage. 5. Be careful: remember to use your ALIAS in the credits. Include crucial information, such as source of music/sfx info in the credits (or -1pt). VIDEO source footage*: Provided by instructor. You may add appropriate stills, videos and/or motion graphics you created. If source footage provided by instructor is not native to FCP, please re-compress the media following these steps: IMPORTANT - Steps to re-compress source footage: 1. Open the provided source footage media with QuickTime Player. 2. Select File>Export 3. Pull down the "Export" menu bar (near bottom), select "Movie to QuickTime Movie." Then click "Options" 4. Set Video Settings to DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, 29.97fps, Best Quality, Progressive scan, and select appropriate aspect ratio. 5. Set Sound Settings to "Linear PCM", "Stereo LR", at 48.000kHz. (also set quality to Best, sample size to: 16 bits. 6. Save the file AS: exactly how it is named by default, with appropriate extension (.mov) DO NOT RENAME! 7. Save the file TO: your own media drive. Make sure the ENTIRE media is exported. AUDIO: You may use/provide music of your choice, voice over, dialogue and sound effects.* Your edited project (video, audio, text...) must not offend anyone in the class. The PG Rating (MPAA definition) is recommended for this class. IMPORTANT - Steps to re-compress audio files (MP3) to AIFF: 1. Open the audio file (or other media file types) with QuickTime Player. 2. Select File>Export 3. Pull down the "Export" menu bar (near bottom), select "Sound to AIFF." Then click "Options" 4. Set Sound Settings to "Linear PCM", "Stereo LR", at 48.000kHz. (also set quality to Best, sample size to: 16 bits. 5. Save the file AS: you may rename this file since it's not shared by the class. Avoid programming symbols like "/,%,&,@,#..." 6. Save the file TO: your own media drive. DUE Date & Time: See Syllabus • Late submission: 0 to 60 minutes late, 0.5 point will be deducted. • Late submission: 60 to 120 minutes late, 1.0 point will be deducted. • Late submission: 120 minutes late till end of instruction, 2 points will be deducted. • Any projected submitted after end of class session on due date will receive no points. • If you can't attend the class, finish & submit the project early, or arrange for a reliable classmate to submit your project for you. LENGTH: Each student will edit one version. There is no restriction for minimum length, but the maximum length should not exceed 6 minutes. (or -1pt) USE OF ALIAS: To provide the class an opportunity to offer non-biased open critiques during the screenings of your works, you must use your designated alias. If it is evident that you intentionally reveal your alias in the assignment in any way, a deduction of 1 point will be imposed. SUBMISSION Guidelines / Checklist: A) You must submit your work as a DVD-ROM (Authored DVD-VIDEO PLUS movie DATA file), clearly labeled on the disc itself (not the case) with: "ACM 372/Term-Year/Assignment #" and write your Alias only. You may submit DVD Video and Data on separate discs too, only if total file size exceeds storage capacity. B) DATA FOLDER: In the DATA segment of your DVD, it must contain the following items: 1. The Final Cut Pro project file (the fcp file) named after your alias + 2-digit number of the assignment (ie: Batman01.fcp) (or -0.5pt) 2. Any extra material (graphics, title cards, music files, sfx) being used in your project not provided by the instructor. (missing media=-0.5pt). Audio files must be in AIFF format, if you use MP3, convert to AIFF before editing. (or -0.5pt) 3. A self-contained quicktime movie (.mov file) in DV format (DV/NTSC 29.97fps, 720x480, audio: 48khz 16 bit stereo), this is the file you export from your finished sequence (or -0.5pt). The mov file must display correct aspect ratio. (or -0.5pt) 4. Be organized: create folders and arrange your media/files so they're easy to find. 5. You don't have to include the source material (video footage) provided by the instructor in your submission disc. C) DVD Video: In the DVD-Video segment of your DVD, it must follow these guidelines: 1. The first play item must be the main menu. (or -0.5pt) 2. The play button must be automatically selected and ready to play the track. (or -0.5pt) 3. The main menu must contain these information (or -0.5pt): a. Semester/Year b. Course Number/Name c. Instructor d. Project number e. Edited by: Your alias (no real names!) f. Length of show (minutes/seconds) g. Date h. Instruction on how to retrieve DVD-Rom data files i. “For Educational Use Only” 4. The main menu must have background music/audio, balanced at the same level as the main tracks. (or -1pt) *All assignment & exercise materials are provided and used only for the purpose of education / learning during this particular course. Do not use any course materials and completed assignment for any other purposes, whether personal or official, profit or non-profit. None of the course materials / completed assignment may be included in any demo reels or competition / festival submissions. Absolutely no uploading/showcasing/podcasting/file exchange of any of the course materials via the internet, broadcast or any form of public distribution. Sharing of the raw or edited course material to any person not enrolled in this course is prohibited. Any violation will result in severe grade reduction.
