19 JULIA STROBL, INGEBORG SCHEMPER-SPARHOLZ, quently accompanied Philipp Jakob to Graz in 1733.2 MATEJ KLEMENČIČ The half-brothers Johann Georg Straub (1721–73) and Franz Anton (1726–74/6) were nearly a decade younger. There is evidence that in 1751 Johann Georg assisted at BETWEEN ACADEMIC ART AND Philipp Jakobs’s workshop in Graz before he married in Bad Radkersburg in 1753.3 His sculptural œuvre is GUILD TRADITIONS hardly traceable, and only the figures on the right-side altar in the Church of Our Lady in Bad Radkersburg (ca. 1755) are usually attributed to him.4 The second half- brother, Franz Anton, stayed in Zagreb in the 1760s and early 1770s; none of his sculptural output has been confirmed by archival sources so far. Due to stylistic similarities with his brother’s works, Doris Baričević attributed a number of anonymous sculptures from the 1760s to him, among them the high altar in Ludina The family of sculptors Johann Baptist, Philipp Jakob, and the pulpit in Kutina.5 Joseph, Franz Anton, and Johann Georg Straub, who worked in the eighteenth century on the territory of present-day Germany (Bavaria), Austria, Slovenia, Cro- STATE OF RESEARCH atia, and Hungary, derives from Wiesensteig, a small Bavarian enclave in the Swabian Alps in Württemberg. • Tadej Pungartnik, Regional Museum Maribor the Language of Peace
Tadej Pungartnik, Regional Museum Maribor The Language of Peace Like other countries, Styria also had it own territorial army. Besides the infantry it also included cavalry units, which were comprised of harquebusiers and cuirassiers. Because of their equipment, the later belonged to the group of the so called heavy cavalry. From the middle of the 16th century the heavy cavalry was increasingly replaced by harquebusiers, because they were more flexible, because of the lighter equipment. They were armed with a harquebuse, which also gave them their name. The weapons for the army mostly came from the armoury of the Styrian estates in Graz. As a sovereign’s city, Maribor was mostly supplied with weapons from the Court armoury in Graz, where they bought both the weapons needed by the citizens for their defence, as well as the weapons for the armament of the mercenaries. Single pieces of weaponry have survived over four centuries and are today exhibited in the Regional Museum Maribor. On the basis of research conducted on the archive sources and a comparison of the weapons, kept in the country armoury in Graz and the Regional Museum Maribor we may conclude, that the individual pieces surely arrived in the city at the river Drava from Graz. The marks on some halberds, spears and swords prove the thesis that the pieces were bought from the armoury, which had commissioned Upper Austrian masters for their production. Among all these pieces however, no equipment of the mercenaries of the territorial army, the so called Landsknechte, has been preserved. During the 15th and 16th centuries they presented the infantry of the mercenary army.

  • Don't You Just Have to Love Munich?
simply Munich Destination Information Don’t you just have to love Munich...? (12.01.2018) …so asked writer Wolfgang Koeppen in the title of one of his books, published posthumously in 2002. The volume contains impressions, conjectures and insights focusing on the city that was his beloved home for over 50 years, right up until his death. The Greifswald-born writer said of his life in the Bavarian capital: “I live in Munich. My writing desk stands on the banks of the Isar river.” 111 reasons to love Munich? Or just 33? At least 55? – Travel guides today love to fight over the numbers. Rather than letting it irritate us, we closed our eyes and reached into the Munich treasure chest, emerging with 25 real gems. Is it essential that you look at all of these? Of course not! Just browse the 25 titles and investigate those that appeal to you most. Each entry can be read as a standalone point. 43 JULIA STROBL JOHANN BAPTIST STRAUB FROM WIESENSTEIG TO MUNICH AND VIENNA Being the eldest, Johann Baptist Straub (1704–84) cer- tainly had a special position and a pioneering role among his brothers. He was the first to leave his father’s workshop in Wiesensteig to pursue training as a sculp- tor at the Wittelsbach residence in Munich. However diligently he learned the craft of this father, master car- penter Johann Georg Sr, it must not be forgotten that he was a carpenter’s journeyman when he started his four-year apprenticeship with the Munich-based court sculptor Gabriel Luidl.1 His first independent works – though unfortunately not preserved – were made in 1725 under court architect Joseph Effner for the newly furbished rooms in the southern wing of the Munich 2 Residence. His brother Philipp Jakob, only two years 1 younger than him, soon followed him to Munich.
