BALLARAT MINING DISTRICT.

CENTRAL DIVISION. . llfr. Harrie Wood, Mining Registr'fr. . The City of Ballarat. (late Durham) Company are still sinking their new shaft, whic~ has now reached a depth of 340 feet. ' The Band of ·Hope and Albion Consols are still prospecting for other reef.washes, and are making preparations for opening up !l-nd working their quartz reef. . . The St. George and Ban~ of Hope United Company are pushing on 'their prospecting works, with a view to. open up the reef-washes within their claim. ". II The United Hand-in-Hand and Band of Hope Company's main drive, at a. depth of 425 feet, has recently broken through into payable washdirt. .i The prospecting works of the Park Company appear likely to lead to the discovery of extensive reef-washes in the north-western portion of their mine. i • The Golden Reef Company. are driving through reef-wash at a depthiof 240 feet, and will shortly commence washing. ' . . The New Koh-i-noor Company are prospecting for reef-washes in the .~laim formerly known as the Burra-burra Company's claim. A company has recent.ly been formed to work the ground formerly I}eld by the Sir William Don Company. They are sinking a shaft, which is now about 90 feet deep. . The Great Gulf Company have recently discovered another reef-wash from their No.2 shaft, but are prevented by loss of level from proving the extent and quality of it, until a new drive shall have been constructed. The Earl of Essex Company recently struck a tributary lead 15 feet wide, from which a trial machine yielded 2 ozs. of gold. The Nil Despel'andum (formerly Rose Hill) Company, after sinking their shaft to a depth of 168 feet; had to abandon it in consequence of meeting with a very troublesome drift, containing a large quantity of water. They ~ve co:nmenced a new shaft in a position where they expect to reach the ~OttOlll without encountering any serious difficultles., The depth of the new shaft is 60 feet. , The Sovereign Company are still sinking their shaft, which is now 670 feet deep. The last 6 feet have been sun~ in a .strong lode, and they have. not.yet got thr?ugh it; They have reduc~d a much larger quantity of stone durmg thIS quarter, and the average YIeld IS a shade higher than that of theprevlOus quarter. The Pioneer Company are still sinking. 'fheir shaft is now 330 feet deep. The Countess Company have recently completed the erection of additional machinery, and will shortly com- mence crushing operations. - I The quantity of water supplied by the Ballarat and Ballarat bast Water Commission during the. quarter was 13,150,000 gallons; and the price charged was 4d. per thou&'l,nd'gallons. -, The banks. purchased during the quarter 34,000 ozs. 18 dwts. 23 grs. of gold. /; 'SOUTHERN DIVISION . . Mr.. J. ~f. Colifman, Mining Registrar. Though not quite as cheerful as could be desired, the divisiOll is not so oppressively dull as it has been. The most strikingly noteworthy incident of the quarter is the discovery at 'paddy's Gully, Rokewood JUllction, of a 40-oz. nugget, by a party of fossickers, only a couple 'of inchesJrom the surface. . I regre~ that, o.wing to the hurried, manner in which the lucky find was broken up, and disposed of, a cast or sketch was Impractlcable. . ' The Paddy's Gully Reef traverses the precise ground in which thc"nugget was found. . The prospects of the Stanley C011!pany, Pitfield l'hLins, have improved immensely within the past few weeks, a new run of auriferous drift, yieldi~g 10 ozs. to the. machine, having been alighted pn. Th~ Hopewell Company, Staffordshire Reef, have just had erected a neat compact eight.head battery; and as the stone now being raised looka splendidly, they expect to render a respectable account of themselves in next quarter's returns .. The Spee!iwell Claim is ·being worked by a tribute party recently organized. '. ':" ,r) ,,' , • • At J?reak.o' -Day the private property has been yielding somewhat' better returns th!m: ordinary.' Bulldog is dull. Grassy Gully hopelessly so.' . , ,.), 1,; •• ! " ,

QUARTZ MINING. , This bran~h of' mining continues. po~r, the total returns being 5S6'ozs. of gold from 3791 ton; or'qVartz. No new: 4i~c.oyeries have been made during the quat-tel', and there is nothi!lg calling for special re,port." A considerable amount of prospecting is being dorie. ALLUVIAL MINING. The Charters Towers Company, Buninyong Estat:~, is obtaining good yields, and mining operations are being carried on vigorously at the other mines, on, the' estate.' The, Devonshire are working in the gutter, and obtaining payable yields: There is nothing new to report on the Durham, or the other deep workings. On the shallow ground,. at, Kitty'S, sorrio large nuggets, up to as high as 12 lbs. weight, have been unearthed from very. shallow workings. I estimate the amount of.alluvial gold obtained during the quarter at 4131 ozs., as follows :- ' oz. dwt. gr. Defiance 439, 0, 0 'Perseverance 1,132 0 0 .. Char'ters Towers, 400 0 0 Duke of Cornwall 300 0 ,0 . Kitty's 360 0 0 'All other sources " 1,5_00 0 0 .!!'otal 4,131 0 0

\ ,SMY.THESDALE DIVISION. Mr. John LlIndt, Mining Survellor and Registrar. " The yield.' from all sources has been 14,729 ozs.'9 dwts.; showing a slight falling off as compared with that of the previous quarter. This is owing to the cessation of some claims'at Carnghain, and a decline in the proceeds of one or two of thjl chief ,mines at Scarsdale. New claims in 'oth!3r parts of the division, and inc,r!,!ased returns from some old ones; ar'e making amends for a good 'portion of the loss occasioned by the causes above mention:ed~ The Trunk Lead, at Haddon, is steadily improving, and will probably in ,a few months more add materially to the ret~rns from that portion of the district. In general, Haddon may be considered as regaining position. At Smythesdale thQ Eldorado·Claim is giving excellent returns. The gold is taken from a reef-wash unnoticed or, disregarded at the first working of the lead some years ago; indeed, it may he said that these reef-wasnes constitute, now the most valuable portion of the mines of this division. Beyond these few general remarks there is nothing to report respecting the alluvial mines. Quartz mining is still in a backward condition. '1'he noll-success of the New Britannia, at Carngham, has extinguished, for a'time at least, further efforts in that direction. There are, however, indications of a revival in other localities-the Leonidas, at Haddon, and Globe, at Drown's, having.given very good prospects, as shown, by the annexed returns. . Haddoll .~ .. 229 6 .• }t " CRESWICK DIVISION. lif,;.James Stevenson, Mining Surveyor and J;legistrar. , I have the honor to report that there is a considerable increase in the quantity of quartz gold obtained during the quarter, and that tlie averagc yield per ton is. nearly a pennyweight per ton' greater. ' Tbe quantity of alluvial gold has decreased, but this is principally due to the fact that there has been very little gold obtained from sluicing during the quarter. I regret to say that the Cosmopolitan Company haS discontinued operations for the present owing to the difficulty of getting in calls; I hope, hO,wevcr, it may be reorganized, and that its stoppage may be only temp'orary, otherwise it will greatly retard the proving the direction of the deep leads at Creawick, as it was the most advanced company on the'deep ground. ' •

GORDON SUBDIVISION . . Mr. Thomas Cowan, Mining Sur,veyor and Registrar. . , , - ALLUVIAL MINING'. No mining of any importance has been carried on during the quarter under this head, only 23 ozs. of gold having been obtaill;ed~, " . " , ',' , " , ' . - QUARTZ MINING. The Egerton Company have been raising quartz from their shaft in th,e cutting at a depth of from 400 to 350 feet, still continuing to take only about 10 feet of quartz along the western wall. In addition to this they have also been raising stone from the shaft, 300 feet in depth, at the southern end of their lease. Both parcels have been crushed together, so that no average of each reef can be given. ' . , Black-horse Company,-'l'he stone raised by this comPany has been taR en from a depth of about 466 feet from the surface, and from a lode averaging 13 feet in width. They have crusbed 448 tons from the whole width of the reef, which yielded 4 dwts. 6'11 grs. to the ton. A considerable amount of prospecting has also been carried on during the quarter at the 826-foot level, but as yet without any very encouraging results. This company have also been engaged during the quarter crushing stone for the Welcome Company, IJittle Forest. Moorabool Champion Company.-':'This company have worked in the first month of the year only, and during that time crushed 25 tons from a lode 60 feet from the surface and from 6 to 14 inches in width, which averaged 7 dwts. to the ton. They have ceased operations since that time. . Gallagher, and Co., Moorabool, have l)cen engaged in raising stone from a lode averaging 8 inches in width. They have crushed 45 tons during the quarter, whicb yielded 1 oz. 5 dwts. per ton. Parker's Extended Company, Gordon, have been raising quro·tz from a 'lode 9 feet in width, at a depth of from 200 to 260 feet from the sUlface, during the last two months. They have crushed 820 tons, yielding 233 ozs. 18 dwts., from this lode. The company consider their prospects very encouraging, as t4e yields are gradually increasing. . ' South Learmonth and l!:gerton Amalgamated Company are engaged in sinking a shaft about 500 feet south of the Egerton Company's shaft. It is now sank to a depth of 114 feet, but the ~ompany intend to sink it to a depth of 300 feet from the surface before opening out. I

STEIGLITZ SUBDIVISION. Mr. O. W. Collins" J.l1ining Regist;ar. The principal feature in quartz mining in this ,division during the i'past quarter has been' the discovery of severnl new reefs at Elaine, and the good results obtained from some of the stone crushed. Although, in Bome cases, the crushings have been poor, still a Jarge extent of auriferous ground is shown to exist, and some of the claims, such as Clark, Baldy and Co., the Minerva Company, Lindsay and Co., and others, give every indication of the permanent character of this goldfield. ,: . On Steiglitz mining matters have been very quiet; but the returns from the crushing still keep a good average, particularly in the case of the Ncw Albion Compa~y. In their 300-foot level north payable stone has been traced for 281.i feet north, and in some placcs it is remarkably rich. '. The returns from the Albion Company are a little below the average, but the manager reports favorably on the appearance of tbe stone in the stopes and faces. One hundred tons of quartz are now awaiting crushin'g. ,The Native Youth Company have 170 tons of stone raised ready for crushing of the average character. This company, whose returns have hitherto been so good, is compelled to partially suspend operations on account of the great influx of water. ' . The Divideud Quartz Mining Company, after ,working tbeir claim for some months with very poor results, have let it on tribute, and the stone now being taken out is very rich. . . , The Welcome Company, at Little Forest, are about crushing stone which promises w.ell. On Elaine prospecting for gold drifts by boring is being commenced. ,

BLACKWOOD DIVISION AND BLUE MOUNTAIN SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. Joltn F. Hansen, Mining Registrar. QUARTZ' MINING. Barr!J's Reif.~This portion of the district 'has lately attracted a good deal of attention, owing principally to the steady increase of the yield of gold from the Sultan Company's min!l' This is the 'only public company of the, many formed about four years ago, at the time of the rush, which has, in the face of heavy expenses and many diffi culties, carried on the development of its mine in a systematic and energetic manner. Judging from the large body of gold-bearing quartz at present in view, the shareholders will, in all probabiltty, see their mine quoted as a. dividend-paying one before long. Operations in this mine' are carried on with vigor. '\.'he 165.foot level, No.2 s.l;laft, has been driven over 500 feet on tbe liue of' reef in payable stone; a wil:tze from tbis level is now going down to connect it with the 'works of' the 400-foot-Ievel. When the two levels are cortnected, one of the winding and pnmping ~ngine8 can be dispensed with, and a considerable saving in the working expenses will be effected. 28

Mountis Brothers are working on a small but very rich lode of quartz, 20 tons of which have given a yield of 2200zs. 5 dwts., or an average yield of 11 ozs. to the ton. They finished crushing on the 31st ultimo, but did not clean up till the 1st instan~, consequently the yield of gold will appear in my next quarterly ·return. This mine is· one of t.h~ first taken up on Blackwood, and originally held hy Tl'ewhella Brothers, who did so well in it as to be in a POSItlO~ to retire in independent.circumstances, when they disposed of it to the present owners. Themine is a sm:,ll o:oe, be:ng only 160 feet on the hne of" the reef, and surrounded by the areas of the Sultan and tlje Sultana Compullles respect1vel y. ' • . Simmons' Ree.t:-1Vater not having been plentiful the crushing mills driven by that power have been mostly at a standstill, aud as a consequence the yield of gold has been small. . ,a.olden. Point.-The Morning Star Company, after overhauling their machinery, erecting a nl?w engine~house and drIvmg another cross-cut over 100 feet from the main tunnel, with the intention of making it a permanent way, have again struck good ,quartz. The first crushing, ,with an average yield of an ounce to th~ ton, has just taken place. Prospecting is being carried on north and south of this mine with nothing of any consequence to report upon as yet.. , ' Bla1ceville.-The Undaunted Oompany having effected some alterations on their battery, crushing operations were suspended during the ,timi;!, inconsequence of which the' quantity of quartz operated upon has been comparatively 0 ~m~Jl, w?ilst tpe average yield of go~d per tOI~ h~s. been maintained: The original 8hare~0lders h~ving merged their Interest lnto a company under the LImIted LIabIhty Act, the company have let the mIlle' on tnbute to a party of '26 men, . " The A.A. 1 Company are 75 feet in with their cross-cut from the 12.o-foot level, and expect shortly to strike the reef. They have to contend against a good deal of water. , The Flora McDonall Company, on Ashton's line of reef, are driving a'tunnel to intersect the reef. No work has been done in any of the other registered claims in this portion of the district. WrigM's Reif.-The North Britnin Company, as well as the Red, White, and Blue Company, keep steadily at work; the average yield of gold per ton from both mines is·smnll, but, having' a large body of storie to operate on; it leaves a mnrgin of profit to the owners.' , Ga1'ibaldi.-A Water-race about 8 miles in length is now being sUI'veyed from the Korgamnunnip Creek to the $1aribaldi Company's claim. The company intend to erect a battery to be driven by a water-wheel. This race, when finished, will also command a large area of unworked !~lluvial deposits. ..'" Yankee Reif.-This portion of the district is, with the exception of a few Chinese alluvial miners, tptally' abandoned. The engine which belonged to'the late Trojan Company, and which was,the last one left in this locality, " has recently been removed .. ALLuvIAr, MINING. Nothing of any consequence worth noticing has taken place. Water.-A verage quantity of water Bold :-Six: sluice·heads; price per sluice-head, 15s. per week.

BALL AN SVBDIVISION.

I Mr. G. P .• Black, Mining Registrar. During the past quarter a good dElal of dead work has been done at the different claims. Ashton's Claim.-A new and permanent shaft has been suuk to a depth of 125 feet, at which If}vel driving will be commenced as soon as the well is sllllk; a whim is also in process of erection. There waS only 30 tons of quartz put through the hattery during the quarter, which yielded 65 ozs. 5 dwts., or an average of 2 ozs. 3 dwts. 12 gra. to the ton. . Kirby's Claim.-'A tunnel is being put in from the bed of the creek; a distallce of 100 feet has been 'driven and it is anticipated that.another 20 feet further will cut the lode, Blake's Claim.-The shaft is sunk to a depth of 70 feet, with very good indications. Sinking will be continued. A good deal of prospecting is going on all over the district.. .'

BEEOHWOR TH MINING DIS'l'RICT . .. BEECH WORTH DIVISION. • Mr. Alexander Alderdice, Jl1illiug Registrar. Durin er the quarter· mininer has been exceedingly dull in this division-the alluvial in consequence of the dryness of th~ seasoD, and the q)la-;'tz on account of there being no fresh discoveries, aud the old reefs not turning out as well as they used to. - The Rocky .Mountain Company, Spring Creelr, 'had what may b~ called their first" wash-down" in the early part' of the quarter, which proved very remunerative to the shareholders. For thirteen months' work of 8 men the result' was 1213 ozs·., or It dividend of £2 17s. 6d: per share. As this is perhaps, the most extensive sluicing company in tile colony, I give a few figures i~ connection with it which may prove interesting:-The tail·race, whi(fh is 1178 yards in length. has been hlasted through hard granite for nearly the whole distance. Its average depth is about 12 feet, alld boxes have been put into it which are 16 inches wide and 3 feet high. 'l'he total cost of the tail-race, which took about five years to cClllplete, was £7500 .. Tile claim is situate on Spring Oreek, immediately below the town of Beeehworth, and consists of old worlrings prihcipally, varxing frol11 about 15 to 35' feet in depth. The water by ~vhich it is worked is o,btained from Spring Creek nnd springs in the vicinity. At the rate the ground was was~ed away last'year the claim will take about twelve years to work out. But as the water was more than usually plentIful duriug thc past year, it is·probable. that taking ordinary seas~lls, t~H:re is flfteen years' work before t~e company. , 'fhe Eldorado mines are not progresEiu!.{ f~vorahly. '1 ~:e Endeavor Company (a new one) whICh h~l~s a piece of ground adjoining the old Kneebone Oompany, I)ottomed theIr first shaft a few weeks' back, and after dnvlng some distance they struck the lead-about 3 feet of washdirt, contuining a fair show of gold and san~. The Oyens Gold and 'l'in Company are putting on more hands, rind it is thought that they will soon get out of their difficultIeS. The mortgagee has sold up the Wellington Company, although it was understood that the prospects of the company. were improving, and that the claim was being worked very economically. 29

Y ACKANDANDAH DIVISION. I Mr. Peter WrigM, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. Mining in this division has presented no unusual feature during the past quarter. The alluvial miners have had more water than is usual at the season,r and are consequently more steadily employed than in most summers; the returns are rather low, but are very steady. No new ground has been opened, and there is none to be opened; the ground is all ~hallow, and has been thoroughly prospected, so that every place that is payable is pretty well known. The quartz miners are not doinll; well. The Homeward-bound Claim, at Hillsborough, is the only one tha.t is being worked with any spirit; the shaft has been sunk to a depth of 340 feet, and. continucs payable; th" reef at that depth is 5 feet thick, and',gives about 7 dwts, per ton., , The Von MoltkeJT,pnnel is being driven as fast'as, possible, but the ro(lk is hard, and the progress slow; the finishing of this work wilLfset about 20 more men to work. ' There is no water being sold just now; at the beginning of the quarter. there were four heads being sold at a.bout a farthing per thousa~d gallons.

INDIGO DIVISION. Mr. R. Arrowsmith, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. I Quartz mining as usual continues exceedingly dull; no new discoveries h~ve been made during the quarter, and the returns are below the average.' . Alluvial mining is much in the 8.'lme condition as last quarter. The Doma Mungi Tribute Company are still engaged in running their main drives, preparatory to blocking out, whic!). is to be con;Jmenced in a month or six: weeks. Some trial washings have been made with a view to ascertain approximately the probable yield of the washdirt. From the last machine (the fifth tried) containing 29t square fathoms, 1 oz. 1 dwt. per square fathom or Sl't of timber was said to be obtained. Should anything like this average be maintained, the results will, of course, be very satisfactory. ' The Caledonian Company, at the junction of the Caledonian and Durham Leads, have, after steadily persevering for many months, struek very good washdirt, and hopes are entertained that the lead may be traced into the ground formerly held by the Indigo Grand Junction Company. who expended a large sum without discovering payable gold. . . TJ;!.e Glencoe·.r unction Company are still sinking shafts, and several months must necessarily elapse before , payable yields are obtained. .. A large claim for 80 men has been taken up on the Stockyard Creek, situated between Uhilternand Barnawartha. The locality is almost untried. A considerable outlay of capital will be required, but no doubt the company, ~hich is being formed by Mr. John Wallace, will; under his direction, give the ground a thorough trial, and it is to be hoped the results will fully meet the expectations of the promoters. The Chinese continue steadily at work on the old leads. Want of water is compelling several parties to suspend their claims from work until the wet weather sets in. No water sold for ~ining purposes during the quarter.'

BUCKLAND DIVISION. 'Mr. Lewis C. Kinchela, Mining Registrar. It is a matter to be· regretted that no improvement in mining results, nor in mining prospects generally, can be reoorded for the quarter just closed, so far 3S the Buckland'diviRion IS effected, In' quartz mining the most noteworthy circumstance is the fact of the workings in the Happy Valley Reef having now re!lched a depth of 600 feet from .the cap of the old reef, and that at this level the quartz struck, and the general indications, leave room for little doubt to exist that not only a permanent but remunerative lode remains still ~o be worked by this company. . A reef discovered at Growler'f! Creek in 1859, and subsequently abandoned as being worked out many years since (Meade'S Reef, now the Prince Arthur), has r'lcently been occupied by the Associated Claims Company, the result of whose operations may be briefly stated as follows :-The quartz towards the southern boundary of the claim ran out in the old workings, but the walls of the dyke remained clearly defined. ,A drive was put in for the purpo~ of prospecting in the direction named, this work being partly carried out by!,various parties who at different times oocupied the claim and then abandoned it as worthless, and partly by the present owners, until a distance of 200 feet was reached, when the cap of new and large reef was struck. Subsequent workings have proved this reef to average from 3 f~t to 9 feet in width-has been driven along for a length of 126' feet without its southern boundary being reached-and at present 88 feet of backs are ready for stopinll;. This large body of stone is judged, from trial crushings, to be not less than 14 dms. to tue ton; and in this reef-discovered by a moderate sh!1re of perseverance and" inconsiderable outlay..:..the Associated Claims Company possess, I believe, one of the most valuable mining properties in this division. - I Three other of our old rich, hut subsequently abandoned reefs, are held by this company; however, the prospect.ing upon them, is carried out in a languid manner, ill cODsequencej it is supposed, of all these properties being either under offer, or sold to an English company, by whom, it is reported, a.dequate capital will be devoted to thoroughly test all these mines. • A river claim has la~ely been opened in the . abou~ one mile from the Porepunkah Homestead. It is boli€ved to pay from £5 to £6 per man per week. ~'he owners have applied for a mining lease of this claim. Miles of the river abovlf and bclow this ground are not only unoccupied but unprospected. ALLUVIAL l\fIXING. , Working Miners' Lead, Goqfrey's ,Creek.-The prospects"obtained in ,the 'New Hobur "CompanY's 'ground during the, present. quarter hav.e realiz'ld the 'hopes imtertailled, thn.t payable results ,'\voula. be! obtained froihtheir ground .• A drive was ,put in across .tlie gutter which was found to obtain a width of 120 feet, and drives have subsequently been carried along the course of the 'lo,'\d; the return herewith shows the results' obtained, from those drives only. No blocking-out has been done, and none is intended until the main levels have been driven to the boundaries of their ground, when we may expect a considerable increase in the returns. , ' Leases have been applied for occupying a distance on the course of the lead of over 2 miles'lower down. Should those new holders proceed legitimately to worK tj:Ieir ground there ,can be no doubt th,ut this lead would, assume proportions, whichnone have yet reached in this subdivision. " " , ',"'," ' \ ' . ' . Royal Standard Lead, Robinson Crusoe Gully.-The only cqmpany at work on,this:lead, have not realir-ed'the expectat.ions 'of the 'shareholders.' ,The s&alJ. returns obtained are, altogether disproportioned to the outlay incurred, and hopes of improvement is the only thing that keeps them at work, the gutter being narrow and the average ,.yield small for its width.' " . 'l'ho Tritton J;,ead, Durham Gully.-Some of the old ground on this (abandoned) lead has been taken np by a party of working miners who have been engagt'd over tvvo mOlltI!s driving a tunnel, starting from a point near Spring Creek; they are sanguine of striking other runs of gold-not -touched by the miners who worked the ground in the first instance. , I. . The Goulburn River and the gullies ,heading 'out of the Puzzle Ranges stilI continue to keep a portion of the miners employed, but the results they are obtaining are not of an enqouraging character.

'. 'QUARTZ Mni'i:NG. Lueky Reef.-The new proprietor. of, the ground formerly held by the Albert and the Aurora Gold Mining Companies has commenced active mining operations, but has not yet got stone out for a crushing. " th' , The stone'illl the lower levels does not appear to'carry as good an average of gold as wlls'formerly obtained from" this reef; it is to be hoped, however, that some good results are still. to be obtained from those claims." . I The Ajax and Leviathan Tribute Companies are the only. other companies at work on this line of reef. , MYBterious Reef, Mysterious Com.pany.-This company, after having erected inachinery and put down a working shaft to a depth of 260·feet, have had several crushings during the quarter, obtaining an average, of 6 dwts. '14 grii. Under the present system of working, this, it is said, will not pay expenses; the works have therefore been stopped with the' intention.of letting the mine on iribute. .' .' ," .. There can be no doubt that were this mine in the hands of a good tribute company it would pay wel,l, as the country in which the reef lies is good, and the stone easily obtained"the reef being about 2! feet thick. ' ·No other claim ,is at work on this line. " Britannia Reef, Spring Creek·. .,-This reef has again been taken possession of, and machinery is now being obtained and erected thereon, which will enable the present company successfully to deal with the water which has EO often beaten ,the millers, who have at different times been'in possession of this ground'. '. The Diorite Dykes at Durham Gully still continue to give good results. , Notwithstanding the fact that the yield of quartz gol~ has increased 33' per cent. over la~t quarter, the feeling of depression in the mining community, still exists;' there can be no doubt, tha:t it will require some decided improve- ment in the prospects of the districts'to remove this feeling. ' '

" "

DRY CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. Robert Pemberton, Mining llegi8t'1·m". I have the honol' to report that during the past qnarter mining operations in my subdivision have been as al.ltively carried on as heretofore, although I am sorry to say the yield of ,gold has considerably decreased. '

'GAFFNEY'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainswortlt, Mining Surveyor and Regi!!tra~. The prospects of this subdivision have not improved during the past quarter. ' , The Rose of Denmark Company are working their mine ellergeLically with pay"able results, but without-the high average yield fl'equently obtained from this mine. Th{lY have now 52 men at work, and the mine is looking well. The other mines being worked, are under tribute. - . .The ,Gaffney's,Creek tributel's have obtained, highly satisfactory results, the SLuff being easily raised.> r ,«" The WallallY tributers ,have thrown, up t{leir agreement, their crushi!li{ proving unsatisfactory. The 'Gren.t .Eas~rn is being worked by Chinamen, but tile result during the quarter'has been discouraging. .' , I have nothing encouraging to report of the mines in this subdivision, and tho yield of quartz gold is unusually ,small. '" '., , ". Good resu.lts have been ohtained from the \~orking of a few alluvial .cr'!ek claims on Raspberry and Gaffney's reeks, but ou the whole the yields have not been of average .value. ' . . There is no puddling carried on in this subdivision, and I hear of no water HOW being sold.

WOOD'S POINT· SUBDIVISION. Nr, A. B. Ainsworth, Mining ,~urveyor and Registrar.. , Despite the small yield of quartz gold there app"ears to be an improvement in the prospects of this subdivi~iori. This is due. ill a great measure, to the beneficial effects of the tribute system (its abuses have not yet been felt here), which obtains now throughout the district. With one exception the mines now, being worked are w,holly or 'partially nnder tribute. In the case of such mines as the Hope and Alps Great Uentral, the adoption of this mode of working may be but temporarYl thou~h some modifications will +10 do~bt Illuke it adaptable to the deep mining in prospect. 31

The Hope Mining Company have now three tributes let, all of which are payable, and promise well for the future. One of these has averaged £7 to £8 a'man since it started. 'fhis company's shaft is progressing most fovorably and not more ,than 93 feet remain to be sunk. 'l'he machinery which is to, be erected consists of pumping and winding gear of about 20 horse-power nominal;, the pumps 8t inches diameter. The entire depth of the shafts when completed from surface will be about 550 feet, or 110 feet below the bed of the river; of the prospects of the mine at that depth nothing is yet known. ' . The Alps Grettt Oentral have been driving on thc new reef, but, have, not .struek payable stone. TheIr' distance from the, western slate on this vein is, however, yet eonsiderfl-ble, and th,ere is good reason to expect a'strike of good gold before the. vein is traced to the western slate, wherein, as yet"all v9ins worked haye proved rich in .t~}s ,mine., No.1 and 2 North have had a pOOl' yield, but as the stuff was easily raisea, there has hardly been a loss to the tributers, who are looking forward to much better results, now that thcy are in ~orking order. '£he ,All Nations ltributers have had but a poor crushing, and the appe'arance of the mine is not just now favorable. ". The Prince of WalJs 'tributers have been successful, and haye made a good thing out of t.heir undertaking, which has yet some eight months to ruu. ' The Great Eastern tl'ibuters 'are working a spur from the main reef dipping west with satisfactory results. At the the Golden Star Company have IHLd very satisfactorYlerushings, and the Oriental tributers have payable yields. " , ' 'l'he Leyiathan Tribute has bflrely yielded wages hitherto. r There are not'less than 16 men out prospecting, chiefly in the Black River district, but so far, the season's work has not yielded a:ny results; the weather, however, has been so unsettled las much to interfere with ,systematic prospecting, and we have two months before us yet, during which finds may be made. .. . , The amount of alluvial gold raised is unusually high,'andit is satisfactory to report an increase in the number of alluvial miners. There has been an influx of disappointed men from Stockyard Creek, who state themselves to be highly satisfied with their prospects in these parts, and who will, I trust, induce'many of' their friends to join them. N othwithstandiug the extreme dulness in all business connected with mihing during the past quarter, I think there is reason for hopeful anticipations in the future. , There is no puddling done in this subdivision, and I hear of no water Heing sold; when sold, price lOs. per sluice.hea,? for 12 hours.' .

BIG RIVER SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, lIIining .surveyor and Registrar. , The Luck's-all Company is the only one 'now crushing in this subdivision; the average yield for the past quarter has been somewhat below the usual return, and the quantity crushed would have been larger but for the fact of the incoming of a new tribute party. '£he mine is now looking well. , One of 'the former tributers of this company's mine has taken up ground to the south of their lease, and is now prospecting it, but without as yet striking gold. .' , The Londonderry and Retriever are doing little or nothing at present, pending ulterior arrangements with the owner of their crushing plant. There is but very little prospecting going on though the encouragements'are many. The Venitia Belle has not yet rewarded its tributers with any results worth mention. " In other respects quartz mining. continup.s very dull in this subdivision, owing to the absence of capital available for speculation and the difficulties with which prospectors have to contend. The alluvial miners have on the whole obtained satisfactory results fOJ; the quarter, and though the ,population remainB stagnant, there appear preliminary indications of a proximate increase by immigration from ,.the lower goldfields, as indeed is the case in other parts of these ranges. No puddling operations are caITied on in this subdivision, nor have I h,ca.rd of any water now being sold; the supply has been abundant this sumuier. . "

JAMIESON SUBDIVISION. Mr. ·W. H. Edwards, Mining Regish;ar. Mining operations in this subdivion, haye not shown any improvement' since the last quarterly report, no new discoveries having been made, and the worldngs have been confined to those clitims previously reported on. ' Gleeson Lease Quartz Mining' Company.-This comp'lnyare still crushing a great quantity of mullock, which accounts, for the small yield of gold per ton for this quarter, being only 423 ozs. 6 grs. from 1019 tons of stone. . ,The Venture Quartz Mining Company.-This claim is looking as well a's usual, having crushed 3i5 tons of stone Yleldmg 1 oz. 12 dwts. 15 grs. to the ton, and the present lot being passed th*ough the mill is expected to yield at the same rate. . ' , , 1'he Specimen Quartz Mining Company have not~ crushed any stone during the past qua, rter; they have now about 50 tons in the paddock, and intend crushing soon; when a Jarge cake -is anticipated, the stone looking as rich as the former, which yielded over 20 ozs. to the ton. . , The North and South Specimen Quartz Mining Companies.-These companies are still driving to strike the Specimen line of reef, but as.yet have not struck any payable stone. , The Alabama Quartz Mining Company.-This company are now in 250;feet with their tunnel, and have struck a gold-bearing leader 4 inches wide, showing good gold throughout. . I The Macks Creek Quartz Mining Company are still actively engaged in driving tho low.level tunnel, which is in now about 340 feet. Several small leaders have been crossed carrying fine gold"but none have proved payable. 'l'ho Albion Quartz Mining Company.-This company have now aboutl200 tons of stone on the surface, and will commence crushing as soon as the mill is repaired which is now out of order. . 1'he Sailor .Bill's Quartz Mining Company.-The driving in this company's tunnel still continues very slow owing to the hard nature of the ground. ; . . The Quee? of the Alps ~uartz Mining COlllpany.-Th~s com\?any h\1ve got a quantity of stone ready for CruShlllg but, OWIng to the searelty of water, they are not able to pass It through the mill. , . KILMORE, DIVISION. .J.fr. James W. Osborn, Mining Registrar. There is nothing new to'remark as to the Rilmore Division for the quarter.

HEATHCOTE DIVISION AND WARANGA ROUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr: J. T. Strong,'Mining Surveyor and Registrar. I have little of impo~tanoc to report with reference to,the last quarter, excepting that a'small' alluvial rush has taken place about 6 miles from the township of Heathcot,e, and about t!:trec-quarters of a mile south of what is known as the Wild, duck road, and close to Mr. Speed's purchallcd land (allotment 27, parish of Heathcote). There are possibly about 300 people on the groUlld, hut many of them not working. 'fhere are, perhaps, about thirty shafts bottumed, in which gold was obtained-many without the" color." The sinking varies from about 12 feet to 18 feet, through clay, cemented gravel, and pipeclay_ The washdirt'is from about 2 'inches to 6 inches in thickness, the width not yet determined. I The yield of gold vi,ries from "bout 5 dwts.' to 1 oz. to the load. ,The groull'l is very patchy. I do not think it is likely to be a permanent digging; howevel', I shall take an early opportunity of again visiting the ground.

.i 'I " 33 W.ARANG.A NORTH SUBDIVISION.

I Mr, Charles J. W. Russell, 1Jfining Surveyor and Registrar. Alluvial mining is at a very low ebb in this division at the present time. No new finds of importanoe have arisen during the last q.uarter, and the old workings are generally abandoned. Quartz mining occupies the principal attention in this division, and is the chief interest. A new "Winding and crushing plant has been erected a~ Cherry Tree, Coy's Diggings, during the past quarter, and is now actively at work. Another reef has been discovered on the same ground, parallel to the last-named, with payable gold vislble in the stone. The reef is 3 feet in thickness.

MARYBOROUGH MINJNG DISTRICT.

MARYBOROUGH DIVISION. Afr. p, Virtue, jun., Mining Registrar. ALLUTIAL MINING. During the first half of the quarter mining operations in nearly all the principal alluvial mines in the division have been attended with unusual difficulties, and consequent depression; but, through the steady application of patience, perseverance, and capital, these difficulties are now being gradually overcome, and I entertain no doubt that the return of gold for the ensuing quarter from each of the gold-producing mines will be fully as large as usual. . , At Chinaman's Flat the Band of Hope Company have had to encounter a constant and veey heavy flow of water and drift in their mine. This circumstance has greatly embarrassed their operations and consumed time. Por several weeks the company could obtain.no returns whatever. The Duke and Timor Company are now erecting a suitable engine-house on their claim. They are looking forward to the speedy arrival from England of the fine new engine which they ordered some time ago. Very sanguine hopes are entertained by the shareholders as to the ultimate success of this mine; in fact, its success is looked upon as oertain. '1'he money already spent upon it is simply enormous. The claim lies close, to that of the Band of Hope Company, and will, in my opinion; when the splendid machinery· to arrive has been erected, and when everything connected with·it is in full working order, prove one of the most valuable mining properties in the division. - . The John Bright Company have been working outside ground duriug the greater portion of the quarter. At the Alma, the Beaham Company have just erected a powerful battery with twenty stamp-heads, for crushing the plentiful and valuable cement which is found on their claim. Hitherto they have had this cement crushed by the Leviathan 'rribute Company. The Alma and '!'imor Junction Company have begun the erection of their steam machinery, which consists of one 24-inch and one let-inch cylinder engine and a double set of lifts. The heavy timber for the engine-beds is on the ground, and it is expected that the plant will be completed, about the end of July. The Gladstone Company have been working poor outside ground during the quarter, but better. prospects are now being obtllined. The Queen Company have struck deeper ground; this has compelled them to put in new levels, and they are now just getting into full work. The Count Bismarck Company. are gradually opening up their mine; they will not be in full work for S0111e months to eome. At Havelock, the Lord Clyde Company have at last made a beginning. The drives put in ha"e touched the lead, from which a good and payable prospect has been obtained, I hope in my next report to be able to spea.k well of the prospects of this mine. At :'Ilajorca, the Golden Lake Company are sinking a shaft through basaltic rock, and are down about 80 feet. Should they succeed in bottoming, it will lead to the further prospecting of the run of deep ground which has been found in the Minorca shaft. This ground has not yet been proved, nor can it be proved without the aid of powerful steam machinory, "as the water is excctldingly heavy. The Kong Meng Company are now attracting great attention. A new engine of 35 horse power has recently been added to their plant, and is nearly ready to start. 'rhe deep ground in this mine has already proved to be very valuaole, as much as 3 ozs. 5 dwts. to the set having been obtained. They are now down to 330 teet, and in a few days they hope to be down to 360 fel't; when this depth has been attained qu~rtz will be raised. The North German Company have sllEtained a ~eve're accident to their plant. In the early part of January a frightful explosion took place, which completely destroyed the boiler and stack. III consequence of this accident the mine has been idle during the quarter. Respecting the Mariner's Reef Company. the manager, Mr. Hampton, "Writes to me as follows :-" We have done nothing in quartz during the quarter. 'We started a drive southward from engine-shaft at the 530-foot level, but the ground being hard it was thought best to discontinue it, and sink the No. 22. 0 84 engine-shaft a ~urther depth ef 100'{eet oefiite Qpeiiingout:; 3,J;i.d:ive.la~e'nciYl' engaged abo~t 'that werk." ~Iessrs. 'rhe Sandhurst and New Eendigo Company, Bristol Reef, are driving south on the course of the lode; width of reef 5 feet, gold visible therein, 'rho Bristol Reef Company's leases, with crushing plMt, have been pnrchased by the above comp\1ny. At the Bell Rock the shaft is down about 200 feet. The Blinkbonnie Company have sunk about the same depth, At the Victoria Olaim, driving south, at the 186·foot or water level, good stone is being got out j width of reef 8 inches 'to 1 foot, and easily worked. The Avoca Tribute Coinpany, Hopeful Reef, have struck payable stone in their old workings. Work has been resllmed at the silver mines. The machinery at the old Silver Mines Reef is being put in order, and the shaft, which is 324 feet'deep, cleared out preparatory to sinking the same still further. The whim has been removed from Sebastopol Hill and placed at the Rotten Reef shaft, which has been sllnk an additional 100 feet. A complete alteration is being made in the crushing plant; a dry process is to be' adopted. Roasting furnaces are being constructed at a cost of £1500. Another quarter will probably not pass over without some interesting results from this large undertaking. ALLUVIAL MINING. A small rush has taken place to WattIe l<'lat, near Rostron's. No water has been sold during the quarter for mining purposes.

CASTLE'MAINE MINING DISTRICT.

CASTLEMAINE DIVISION. Mr. Thomas L. Brown, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. In alluvial mining I have only,to report a general decadence both in operations arid' results, excepting the Defiance Company, Guildford Plain, who have opened. out a large extent ot. ground, and proved its auriferous character by washing the dirt from the several levels driven; only one puddling machine has been in use ; the gold obtnined has been 600 ozs. 12 dwts. 6 grs, for 109 days' wasbing-over 5t ozs. per day. A second machine, with other additional appliances, is nearly completed, when the large extent of ground now ready for blocking will be operated 'upon. . In quartz mining a steady determined progress is made in sinking main shafts and other permanent works. Upon ~he Caledonia Reef the New Caledonia Company have completed erection of extensive plant, consisting of two horizontal engines, pumping, winding, and crushing gear, and battery of twenty stamps. The company hold about one-half their lease (No. 1137), and have let the other half under three tributes. The gold previously reported was struck at 45 feet deep, and followed to 60-foot level on the foot-wall; but on sinking their shaft 'to 115 feet, and driving thence south, no gold was found; by following a very narrow dyke or oross-course, striking south-west, a large body of golden stone was found 36 feet west of the foot· wall. In the several stopes 'and cross.cuts other leaders and bodies of stone head away west, where the hanging wall has yet to be found. This company have been crushing; they have now 1754 ozs. of amalgam, and expect 1200 ozs. to 1300 ozs. when cleaning up on Saturday next. The No.1 Tribute will also finish a large crushing from 134-foot level, their claim being north of the com p'l.ny, and the stone obtained along the foot-wall. Upon this lease 64 men are employed, and along the sanie line shafts are being sunk upon the several leases. , The Devonshire Company have obtained. 802 ozs. from 590 tons of quartz, obtained from their 200-foot level, along ttle foot-wall, from which numerous leaders are striking west; the shaft is being sunk deeper in water, over 6000 gallons per hour ha,ving to be raised. This mine and plant are in excellent order. The adjoining leases are cross-cutting for the reef, the Duke (south) at 164 feet, and the North Devon at 246 feet'; other companies on this line are also working. ' In Wattle Gully, the United Company, in addition to the leaders previously reported, foupd a western reef before Uliknown; from the 235·foot level 257 tons yielded 212 ozs. of gold. Their cross-cut at 31D.foot level is in 72 feet east toward the main reef. Another engine and additional plant is erecting to crush the large body .of stone available. In the adjoining claim, south, Walker and Co. ohtained 108 .oZS. 18 dwts. from 98 tons .of stone. The Wheal Terril Company continue sinking their main shaft, now down 302 feet. The Old Wltttle Gully Company are cross-cutting at 334 feet deep. At the South Nuggety Reef, Dyason and Co. obtained 182 ozs. from 29 tons, and are now raising even richer stone, the gold showing in the solid stone splendidly. . On the Shellback Reef, inside, Carter and Co. obtained 29?Jozs. from 14 tons; a large crushing of equally rich stone is nearly completed; the'reef increases in size and richness as it goes down. Ail a consequence the adjoining Great and Little Cumet Companies have risen in prospective value. . . / The 'White-horse Company have deepeued their shnfts, extended their levels, raised a quantity of quartz ready for crushing, and nearly completed the erection of a second engine with 12-head ba(',tery. I . The Englishman's Company obtained from a small reef 6 028. per ton from 6 tons, and are now sinking shaft to enable them to follow the gold •. ' . On the Sebastopol Reef, the Lewis Amalgamated Company are still sinking; now down 270 feet, with impr.oved indications. They purpose sinking another 100 feet before opening out. The North Sebastopol Company, at 210-foot level, struck a reef 7 feet wide which shows gold.

I 37 FRYER'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. Mark Amos, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

POPULATION. The population returns show a slight increase of quartz miners, but there is no difference except in this respect. Ar,LUVIAL MINING In alluvial mining there is but little doing, except at Table Hill, where tunnelling operations are being successfully carried on by a company, consisting principally of Maldon shareholders. QUARTZ MINING. Notwithstanding the excellent yields we have' had from this neighborhood, from time to time the very primitive appliances in nearly all instances, it is thought that ere long this division will rank amongst the dividend paying ones. , . The most noticeable feature in the past quarter being the yield from the Eagle Company, situated at the head of German Gully, which gave the excellent average pf 14 dwts. per ton at water level, and it must be remarked that the 'reef is well defined, and improving with depth, ,indeed at the southern end of the company's lease the stone is looking better than any seen hitherto. 'l'his has led to the occupatioll of the ground south, and a determination on the part of the proprietors to prosecute their labors vigorously. . N ext to the above is the excellent yield of Small and Co.. Some few weeks back they exhibited specimens of great richness, and their returns have proven that it was no patch, indeed their crushing now looks even superior. . . The Black-hawk Company, who have certainly shown indomitable energy for the past~few years, have at length , an excellent yield of 15 dwts. to the ton, with a large and well-defined lode. 'l'his is regarded by experienced miners as satisfactory to tl).eir neighbors south (the Burdett Coutts, to the Cumberland Company north), and will eventually end in operations being carried OIl still further south, and inore energetically than hitherto. The old Cornish and Spanish Reef, about 30 chains south-east of the Eagle Company, has been taken ul? by a party of Sandhurst miners, who have every faith that the excellent returns years back to water level was suffiCIent to justify them in seeking gold at greater depths. The Thyra Company, at Specimen Hill, have struck very promising stone at the 240-foot levelr, this may lead to the testing of ground both north and south at greater depths than hitherto. , NEW MACHINERY, ETC. The Cumberland Company have now cOIn pie ted the erection of a 35-horse power, vertical engine with patent boiler and patent winding gear, and the ordinary pumping gear. They have a battery of)2 revolving heads. The actual cost to the company has been £1700. It is confidently expected that this southernmost battery will not be idle for want of crushing stuff as, in addition to their own, the Black-hawk Company contemplate crushing with them as the cartage will be but 10 or 12 chains. The prospects of this (the Cumberland Company) were long back sufficient to warrant the erection of proper machinery; and, in addition. to the Black-hawk, we have the Burdett Coutts adjoining, south, who ,have an immense amount of crushing stuff untried, probably from the fact that cartage to any more ~istant place would be, if not unremunerative, still far more payable when t~at serious object of cartage does not eXIst. ' Whilst upon the above subject it is contemplated by a company who now hold the old Chapel Hill ground to provide for the erection of a crushing plant for public purposes in coilllection with their mine-a more central position could not be proposed, seeing the excellent returns from Wilson and McDonald's, the Eagle, and. those of the Little .Nugget, near New London, all of whom cart to, and crush at, Small's, in Fryerstown; cartage costs therefrom·4s. per ton, hence it is obvious that a great impetus would be given to quartz mining by the erection of a _plant as proposed, for prospecting would be more vigorously carried on, as parties are often deterred from risking crnshings when cartage is so expensive; and again, oftentimes small yields are abandoned altogether which might ultimately lead to payable and even rich results. ~l:lr. Thomas Hale, Mining Registrar. Specimen 'HilI Quartz Mining Company are driving in the 310 and 383-foot levels; but little mundie is observable. The machinery works admirably; 1743 tons of quartz gave 333 ozs. of gold, besides the pyrites, for which they got £3 per ton; the reef is now 5 feet thick. 'rhe buddle and the Chilian mill, Hungarian mills, &c., are let at a rental of £3 per week, together with sufficient steam-power, to a party treating pyrites, so that, although small quantities are reported, they must be rich in ore. .' Cornish Quartz. Company,Wombat Hill, gives an average of 12 dwts. 0'68 grs" 3166 tons being crushed during the qua.rter, obtained from 250 and 380-foot levels. Pumping is easy; the underlie is 1 in 3 westedy; dividends are regular, and the mine looks first rate. . . The North Cornish Company have part of their claim let to tribute parties, and are working at different levels to 420 feet with fair average results. The Gladstone Quartz Mining Company, Bryce's Flat, obtained gold-bearing quartz at 30 feet, yielding l4i dwts. to the ton; the lode is 5 feet thick of solid quartz; the shaft is down 50 feet; from the bottom of the tunnel is 9 ft. x 4 ft. the underlie is a little to the east. improving in depth, and I am informed, t):Iat they ha,ve struck a fine body of stone in sinking their shaft. The Great Western Oompany still continue to receive average returns, and are getting a fine body of payable, stone along the west boundary of the Beehive Oompany's Lease at the 470-foot level. At Green Valley the '£hornhlll Oompany have tried their new machinery, which, I ain informed, worked very well; they crushed 100 tons, the yield I have not yet ascertained. The Speculation tributers on Nuggety Reef have again resumed operations, and are erecting a winding. engine on the claim. The Alliance, Mao on the same reef, have nearly completed erecting a powerful winding and pumping plant, 'and the prospects generally seem to be improving, which will make a considerable addition in the' yields for the ensuing quarter. . " ST. ANDREW'S DIVISION. ''Mr. Alfred.A~strong, Mining 8,urveyor and Registrar. I have very little change to report for the last quarter. In alluvial mining Bome very extensive hydraulic sluicing operations are being initiated at Warburton by the Warburton Hydraulic Gold Mining Oompany; The race required to supply the water has been marked out for a distance of about 7,miles to all elevation of 320 feet above the claim, a-qd machinery and piping only await transit from Melbourne, which will be attended with some difficulty, as the whole of the material will have to be packed from the'foot of Warburton Hill, a distance of nearly three·quarters of a miltl, unless a small side cutting sufficient to enable a dray to travel be first cut, which, I am infomIed, will be shortly done by the Roads and Bridges department. This work will also tend to open up the whole of the Upper Yarra district. The difficulty of transit and consequent high price ohtores has a very depressing effect Up~)ll, and is a great drawback to, the mining community in that locality. A party of miners have a good claim in.the Yarra Yarra, at Warrandyte, and other parts of the same river will shortly be tested.' , At Haunted GullY"Berwick, several claims are paying well; the sinking is from 10 to 12 feet, and .the yields are from 6 dwta. to 1 oz. per man. '. I QUARTZ MINING. " Owing to the Perseverance Company, One-tree Hill, having ouly crushed once during the quarter their returns are much smaller than they otherwise would have been. This company expect daily to strike tho reef in their tunnel, which has been driven through very hard ground a distance of 268 feet; they have also cut a winze, out of which they crushed 51 ozs. 7 dwts. from 61 tons of stone, the reef proving to be 5 feet in thickness. The returns for the Union Company, Diamond Creek, are very good. The reef called No. a Reef has been struck a.t a. depth of 160 feet from surface, and will now be worked. The Defiance Company," Warrandyte, have called for tenders for deepening their shaft, and have resumed work. A small quartz leader showing gold has been struck at Roddle's Oreek, and about 2 tons of quart'" are shortly to be crushed for trial. . . . . Upon the whole mining matters generally may be said to be slowly progressing in this. district.

BLUE MOUNTAIN NORTH SUBDIvISION., Mr. GTaham McPherson, Mining Registrar. Until within the last few weeks nothing has been done in alluvial mining in this subdivision except by individual miners, but a complmy of 20 men have taken up the ground lately abandoned by the Grand Junction Company, and are now engaged in sinking a shaft. In quartz, tho Oora Lynn Company have been sinking. The present depth of shaft is 200 feet. The manager purposes sinking to a further depth of 16 feet previous, to opening out. l'he indications are good, and the quartz from the 150·foot to the present level contains gold. Glen Dhu is the only place in this division where quartz mining can be said to be carried on, and there are at present only two men I believe employed on the leases surveyed some months back j but I understand it is the intention ofthose who have taken up the ground-by raising a company with sufficient capital-to develop the reef, which is . supposed to be a good payable one. .' . • ALLUVIAL MINING, A rush has lately taken place between Barkly Post Office and b'renchman's Creek, and abont 100 miners are on the ground. GIPPSLAND MINING DISTRICT.

OMEO SUBDIVISION. M1'. W. Phipps, Mi~ing Registrar. Quartz mining at Swift's Creek is at a standstill, awaiting the removal of the late Black Prince Company's quartz .mill to a more central locality, that being the only mill in the district that· has the requisite appliance for treating the minerals other than gold with which. the quartz at Swift's Creek abounds, and which cannot be properly sepl1rated from the gold by simple crushing and the use of quicksilver only. The alluvial miners are generally well employed. Tin ore of "ood quality, and in quantities supposed to be payable, has been discovered by a party of prospectors from Omeo,"'in the Pilot River, just over the border of the distr.ict, but ·which runs towards the Victorian houndary,

MITCHELL RIVER SUBDIVISION. Mr. John Grimes Peers, Mining SU1'veyor and. Registrar. Nothing noteworthy has occurred since the date of my last rep~rt. Quartz mining is still in the same depressed state, owing to a want of foreign capital. The alluvial miners seem satisfied with their earnings. The galena mines at Buchan continue to attract attention. Several mineral lease applications have been lodged fo·r.land in the locality. '

CROOKED RIVER DIVISIO~·. Mr. James Travis, 1I1iidng Registrar. At no time during the past eight years have mining matters, either as regards quartz or alluvial, looked 80 gloomy and unpromising in this division as they do at the present time. Comparatively speaking, very little stone has been raised and crushed during the quarter, and the returns in every instance have been l)elow expectations. In the Good Hope :Mine'all the paYl1ble stone above the lowest cross-cut has been taken out, and most of the hands· have been discharged. The reef has been cut in tile level into the new reef, but as yet no auriferous stone has been found. I believe the company have it in contemplation to sink another winze in the old mine; in the meantime, they have taken up the Collingwood and Uncle Tom Reefs, and have commenced prospecting the former. Should they succeed in finding payable stone in this mine, it will give employment to a considerable number of hands. The crushing from the Hopeful Mine was not Ilearly so good as was anticipated, only yielding a little over 1 oz. to the ton. The stone looked well, and was confidently expected to return at least double what it did. The shareholders have commenced work again, however, intending to have another crushing in seven weeks' time. The retums from the Garry Castle Mine (Upper Wentworth) have not been quite satisfactory, but the mine ie, I believe, looking better at the pIesent time. The trial crushing from the Great Republic (Garry Castle Company) was very good indeed, yielding Mer 1 oz. to the ton. As this is by far the largest reef in the division, and likewise very easily 'I'orked, 10 dwts. to the ton would pay handsomely for working it. . A crushing of 12 tons from the Cumberland Reef (Thirty-mile Creek) gave an average yield of nearly 2 OillS., but as the cost of packing and crushirig amounted to something like £4 per ton, it barely covered expenses. In alluvial, mining matters are, if possible, still duller than in the quartz. Except a few parties on the Twelve mile, I know of none so engaged that are making even small wages, certainly not more than from 158: to £1 per week. There is no water sold in this diviliion for mining purposes, '

JERICHO DIVISION. lJb·. R. J. Donaldson, 111ining Registrar. In quartz mining things are very quiet here at present. Although several parties are out prospecting, and various reefs already found are being tried, there is nothing of consequence to repOl-t. The Harbiuger has not paid working expenses during the last quarter, the gold obtained heing only 135 ozs.15 dwts. from 710 tons of stone crushed, while the returns from the 10chfyne and Ferntree line have been only payable. In alluvial, the scarcity 9f water in the upper branches of the various creeks has caused many of the miners to suspend work for the present, and where water is plentiful the ground is nearly all worked out. There are no puddling maehines in this division. No'water sold for mining purposes during last quarter.

' The sinking is from 10 or 12 feet deep to nothing, and the whole of this ground is sluiced. The richness of these gold workings, arid th~ easy mode Of obtaining the gold; have given rise to a great many disputes among the miners, and the consequence is that there is a continual contention for the land, and the Warden's Gourtis swarmed with cases of trespas~, encroachment, &c. '" ' The road from Stockyard Creek to the diggings is very b,ad at present, and will be ,almost impassable in the winter time. , , Stockyard Creek.-During the early portion of the quarter about one· half 'of the claims were suspended, and the hOlders thereof, set out for Turton's Creek., However, later in ~he quarter, the whole of these claims were again taken up and are now being worked to advantage, The yield of gold for the quarter'is 2037 OZB. ~,:\.. ,J :_ There has been nothing done in quartz mining.
