Seit dem Jahr 2001, als Carlos Mortensen das WSOP Main Event gewonnen hatte, hat kein weiterer Poker-Pro das Main Event gewonnen. Nachdem der Amateur Chris Moneymaker im Jahr 2003 das goldene Bracelet gewonnen hatte und einen beispiellosen Run auf Poker auslöste, haben tausende Spieler davon geträumt in seine Fußstapfen zu treten. Und tatsächlich haben es bisher vier weitere Amateurspieler geschafft. Moneymaker hat 2,5 Millionen Dollar gewonnen und musste sich gegen 839 Gegenspieler durchsetzen; nur drei Jahre später erhielt Jamie Gold für seinen 1.Platz 12 Millionen Dollar und hatte 8.773 Gegenspieler. Der Gewinner dieses Jahres wird sich letztendlich gegen 6.844 Gegenspieler durchsetzen müssen, die allzeit zweithöchste WSOP Teilnehmeranzahl. Trotzdem sagen viele Pros, daß sie kein Problem damit hätten, wenn die Teilnehmeranzahlen so hoch sind und daß sie ihren Traum das Main Event zu gewinnen noch nicht aufgegeben haben. „Ich denke Poker ist der neue amerikanische Traum“ sagte der Poker-Pro Rafe Furst. „Zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt, schien es so als wollte jeder Spieler ein Stück amerikanischer Geschichte schreiben… heute möchte jeder einfach nur noch das WSOP Main Event gewinnen.
