Seit dem Jahr 2001, als Carlos Mortensen das WSOP Main Event gewonnen hatte, hat kein weiterer Poker-Pro das Main Event gewonnen. Nachdem der Amateur Chris Moneymaker im Jahr 2003 das goldene Bracelet gewonnen hatte und einen beispiellosen Run auf Poker auslöste, haben tausende Spieler davon geträumt in seine Fußstapfen zu treten. Und tatsächlich haben es bisher vier weitere Amateurspieler geschafft. Moneymaker hat 2,5 Millionen Dollar gewonnen und musste sich gegen 839 Gegenspieler durchsetzen; nur drei Jahre später erhielt Jamie Gold für seinen 1.Platz 12 Millionen Dollar und hatte 8.773 Gegenspieler.
