Paddles Up! By Ellie Jones (American)

Okay, girls...who’s ready to grab the shaft, dig deep and feel the glide? This month, the AWA’s dragon boat team extraordinaire kicks off recruitment for 2016. Our Globe Paddlers are seeking women who can go longer, harder and deeper, plunging the dragon boat paddle into the water that is, to help us maintain our championship status. Paddling experience is not required but self-possession is a must as the practices can be tough, the races crazy chaotic and the coaching commands a little, er, off color. But if you’re the dedicated type who won’t blush when being told to "close your eyes and feel the rhythm" then we’d like to talk to you. Ask anyone who’s familiar with this ancient and increasingly popular sport and she’ll tell you that there’s nothing better than dragon boating for building strength, endurance and most importantly team spirit. Getting 20

paddlers to move in perfect unison to power a 500 kg boat across race courses of 2,000 meters takes more than sheer strength. Our approach to training is equal parts physical and social so that women of all ages and experience levels can learn or hone the stroke technique while building the bonds that make synchronicity possible. Twice-weekly sessions on the water are supplemented with land-training that provides a great warm-up for the all- body workouts on the water. “Everyone thinks dragon boating is all about the arms,” says co-captain Elissa Imran. “But the core, glutes and quads are just as important--especially for women who don’t have the same natural upper body strength as men. So we work every key muscle group prior to practice so no one’s getting on the boat cold.”

One Boat One Beat Paddlers are encouraged to stay active on their off days to maintain the conditioning, and Imran, along with co-captain Anne Fifer, provides team members with workout suggestions and continuous encouragement while also coordinating group outings such as kayaking and hiking. “We take advantage of the many outdoor activities Hong Kong offers,” says Fifer. “But like most dragon boat teams we love to party, and spend almost as much time checking out local restaurants and bars as we do exploring outside. We know that real friendship is the foundation for true teamwork and it takes more than a physical investment to build a winning mentality.” Wanting the win can mean all the difference on race days. For teams with a competitive spirit, and that’s the majority of dragon boaters by the way, race days are what it’s all about. Families and friends crowd the beaches, music blasts, food cooks and beers pour throughout the daylong events. The festival atmosphere can draw tens of thousands of spectators and hundreds of participants to the races. For example, nearly 200,000 showed for the Stanley International Championship in June to watch 280 local and overseas teams compete in races. With so many participating, the wait for your team’s heats can be long and the competition intense. Months of practice provide the physical foundation for powering through the races, which are only a few minutes long, but it’s team pride that provides the focus, heart and motivation to earn the wins.

One Part Muscle But All Heart Last season, the Globe Paddlers faced extra tough competition from some stellar teams, including Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Stormies, Lamma Dragons and French Froggies. After earning a few wins and nice trophies, as well as some heartbreaking losses, we went into Stanley International with some questions about whether we could maintain our status as the race’s reigning gold medalists. Earlier races had shown us that, athletically speaking at least, we were evenly matched with some of the other teams. But after one first and one second in the first two races, we pulled out all the stops, threw everything we had into the final race and succeeded in defending our title on our home beach for a fifth year in a row by a mere .12 seconds. A picture may be worth a thousand words but the accompanying photos can’t even begin to articulate the excitement and pride that comes with a hair’s breadth win against well-matched competitors. We’re looking to do it all again in 2016. If you’re fit, full of fun and heart, please contact Elissa Imran or Annie Fifer for information about our recruitment event. If you simply want to check out what dragon boating’s all about, contact Ellie Jones at [email protected] for information about our introduction event on October 13.

“Does the chicken club sandwich come in a ciabatta bread?” Shelda Chickles (American)

I’m sitting with my toes wriggling in the sand. It is prime sunset viewing time at Jimbaran Bay in Bali. The seafood warungs (restaurants) fronting the beach are already in full swing for the dinner shift. I love sitting here watching the tourists (usually with the selfie stick) and the locals enjoy the sea, sand and good food. I’m on the Indonesian island of Bali, specifically in Jimbaran Bay. The seafood warungs here are famous for fresh fish and seafood grilled over dried coconut husk which imparts a unique flavor (the smoke from the fire incidentally clings to your clothes). I look over to my left and see two western ladies (young and in their twenties) inquire about the said chicken club sandwich. The server looks at them blankly. The young ladies try again. “Does the Caesar salad have whole wheat croutons?” Again, a blank look from the server. I fight the urge to go over to their table and tell them that the bread will be white sandwich bread and, no, the croutons will not be whole wheat. I fight the urge to lead them to the back of the restaurant and show them the fish, lobsters, shrimp and clams. I fight the urge to tell them to look closely at the fish, handle it and determine if the flesh is firm and not mushy. Take a peek at the gills. Are they brown and gray (bad fish) or are they red (good fish)? I fight the urge to tell them to haggle with the cook in a good natured way, a little laugh and a final approval of the price. And to finally order a couple of big bottles of beer and wait at the table on the beach. The fish will come perfectly seasoned and grilled. The accompanying sautéed water spinach (kang kung), sambals, chopped garlic, and rice are wonderful additions. A terima kasih or thank you to the server. All this bounty for around US$25. The two young ladies have given up and paid for their beers. They walk over to the next restaurant and then the next, looking over the menu, still in search for the elusive ciabatta and whole wheat bread croutons. I’m a bit disappointed. I want them to experience the taste and smell of Bali. I shrug and took another bite of my fish and a swig of my beer. Feet in the sand, a bit of sea breeze and sunset coloring the sky. Yes, this is Jimbaran.

THE OLD ADAgE that you only get one chance to make a good first impression is true and AWA volunteers are helping hundreds of 15-16 year old local students develop the skills to make that first impression. Dotted around Hong Kong are 190 traditional pawn shops, immediately recognisable by their neon signs with the stylised shape of a bat (which symbolises fortune) holding onto a coin (which represents the interest charged). You can find a good example of a traditional pawn shop at Tak Wing Pawn Shop (72 Central), a four floor tenement with a typical neon sign, metal grilles and saloon doors to exit the shop. The upper floors traditionally provided living quarters for staff and storage space for pawned items.

“China sneezes and the world could catch a cold”. Having attended a talk on how to sell to China, I am more likely to think I am well out of it for now. In China, the mobile phone is king and if you are not selling your wares on WeChat, you are nothing. The Chinese do not look to buy from websites - they simply do not trust them. While in the West, we all strive to produce the most attractive and user friendly website, to encourage time spent admiring our wares and ultimately resulting in the click of sales. Apparently none of this will cut any ice in China. So now I know – if I want to sell in China, I will need to find a distributor who can sell China style. And my website will be suitably attractive to Western eyes – but how will it look on a mobile or a tablet? I am beginning not to care…… The last month has produced a rollercoaster of emotions as I rise and fall from enthusiasm to fear in half a day. From “I can do this” to “why the heck am I doing this – I could be accompanying my husband on a trip to Mumbai, staying in a nice hotel, just being”. I have been teetering on the edge of incorporation, but seconds ago I sent an instructive email to my accountant/ company secretary and we are officially off. Xero has continued to be a challenge. I am good at maths, but I have never been taught book-keeping in any form and the way accountancy works is a mystery to me. After many “reconciliations” my bank accountant and Xero are on speaking terms – but every time I log on I am terrified how much more confusion I can create. The site offers wonderful videos and reams of instruction – but hours, if not days are needed to sit down and drink it all in. I find the uplift I need from a visit to my social enterprise factory. They even ask me for advice re: a variant of my product line. I walk away on air. I can do this! Next month: brand identity and lots of legal jargon

Island Hop Japan - 17 April – 21 April 2016

Explore Japan beyond Tokyo and Kyoto. Art and history lovers unite for this five day journey that will touch you, not only visually but spiritually. We begin our trip in Hiroshima and explore the history of WWII. From there we journey to the island of Miyajima which is rated as one of the top three scenic spots in Japan. Here we visit the Buddhist Five Story Pagoda built in 1407 and the holy Mt Misen where we can walk and take in the views. Next we take the ferry to the art island of Naoshina where we visit various contemporary museums scattered around the island. Our last day in Japan takes us to Kurashiki (warehouse village). Here we stroll around the Kurashiki Historical Bikan Chiku where traditional Japanese style buildings and canals lined with weeping willows retain the charm of ancient times. We also visit the Ohara Museum of Art, the largest private museum in Japan. Its collection includes a large assortment of impressionist paintings and modern Japanese Art. Sign Ups On-going!
