I would not be who I am or where I am without my wife, Brooke. Her love, patience, support, and encouragement, not to mention her refusal to let me quit, have carried me along. Our sweet girls, Emma and Noelle, have provided me with constant and indescribable joy in the midst of tiring work. I pray that these pages would encourage and challenge the next generation of believers to stand together against the principalities and powers, and I pray that God's wisdom would continue to be revealed to the principalities and powers through the church of Jesus Christ. Landon Coleman Frankfort, Kentucky May 2010 Xl CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Over the centuries, churches, missionaries, and lay Christians have utilized numerous strategies in attempting to make disciples of all men. For example, the early church relied heavily on ground-level spiritual warfare. I More recently, in the eighteenth century, the Moravians implemented a strategy that included commerce and economic activities.2 A century later in 1854, Henry Venn proposed a strategy that would result in self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating churches.3 In the last century, Donald McGavran promoted a strategy that took into consideration the way peoples become Christian.4 IC. Peter Wagner defines ground-level spiritual warfare as the casting out of demons. C. Peter Wagner, Warfare Prayer: How to Seek God's Power and Protection in the Battle to Build His Kingdom (Ventura, CA: Regal Books, 1992), 16. Ramsay MacMullen explains the evangelistic importance of ground-level spiritual warfare for the early church: "The manhandling of demons - humiliating them, making them howl, beg for mercy, tell their secrets, and depart in a hurry - served a purpose quite essential to the Christian definition of monotheism: it made physically (or dramatically) visible the superiority of the Christian's patron Power over all others." During this era, scholars used the biblical concept ofthe "principalities and powers" as the foundation for two novel and divergent strategies. 5 Duane Garrett explains, Two distinctive Protestant approaches to the 'powers' have emerged. One is that of Walter Wink:, whose writings form the theological undergirding for the political activism of liberal Protestantism. The other began in charismatic churches but now has gained wider acceptance among traditional, evangelical Protestants; it is the 'spiritual warfare' movement.6 Few would disagree that Walter Wink: is the leader of what Garrett calls the liberal Protestant approach, and most would agree that C. Peter Wagner is the leader of what Garrett calls the spiritual warfare approach.7 Additionally, this paper

In service to this, the Gospel develops a secondary interest in the identity and fate of John The Baptist. John, as Elijah redivivus, provides reasons to believe that Jesus is the Christ, provides a grid by which Jesus’ ministry and identity can be comprehended, and helps justify and explicate the unexpected death of the Messiah. This is accomplished through various literary devices throughout the narrative. For them to be fully effective it is necessary for the implied reader to be actively involved. The fact that Jesus’ identity and John’s identity are not adequately acknowledged within the narrative suggests that the plot moves towards a recognition of both of these figures. Jesus’ identity and John’s identity are related, in such a way that a recognition of John’s witness and identity leads towards a recognition of Jesus’ identity and fate. To understand John is to understand Jesus, and to misunderstand John is to misunderstand Jesus.

Denny Weaver into conversation as a way of addressing two significant debates within contemporary theology – namely, the debate among feminists and womanists asking whether the cross can be redemptive for women and other historically marginalized groups and the debate among Anabaptist-Mennonite and other peace-oriented theologians asking whether God is nonviolent. I take the position that by holding Sölle’s more Abelardian emphasis on the cross as divine solidarity with the oppressed together with Weaver’s “narrative Christus Victor” understanding of Jesus’ resurrection as nonviolent divine victory over evil, both debates can be addressed. I therefore synthesize their views into an integrated Mennonite-feminist theology of the cross and redemption which neither reifies violence nor all forms of suffering as redemptive. The first two chapters provide context for the conversation between Sölle and Weaver.

Dever In this dissertation, a theological and sociological foundation for confronting evil within urban power structures was established. From this foundation, a model was developed for guiding churches in confronting evil within the power structures of their communities. Chapter 2 focused on the development of a theological understanding of the nature of evil within urban power structures derived from the writings of Walter Wink. Chapter 3 examined urban power structures from a sociological perspective. This chapter aided in understanding how and where systemic evil resides within the major urban power structures of society (governments, economic and cultural institutions, and corporations) and within American capitalism as a whole. Chapter 4 offered a practical eight-step method for discovering the individuals within particular power structures who hold the power. This helps in locating the pressure points of change. In addition, this chapter aided in understanding what it is about the nature and function ii of urban power structures that often make them appear impervious to change. This section related urban power structures to conflict theory and, specifically, to the writings of C. Wright Mills and Ralf Dahrendorf. Chapter 5 examined three community organizations that illustrate what is involved in struggles against urban power structures.
