Curiously, the two teams have never played out a draw. The record reveals six wins for Real Madrid CF and four for Juventus. In only three of the 11 matches have both teams managed to get on the scoresheet, with seven matches ending 1-0. ∑ One, of course, was the 1998 UEFA Champions League final in which ended Real Madrid CF’s 32-year wait to regain the European crown. Predrag Mijatovic’s 66th- minute goal decided the final from which, of the players selected by , only and Raúl remain at the club – though played against them. ’s side also included , , , and . ∑ However, the 2002/03 semi-final is the freshest memory in the fans’ minds. Unused subs: Chimenti, Ferrara, Pessotto, Birindelli. ∑ This match will bring back special memories for Juventus coach Fabio Capello, who spent the 1996/97 season as head coach of Real Madrid CF. He was in charge of 48 first-team games in his only campaign at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu: W 31 D 12 and losing five (all away from home) F 96 A 41. Three of those losses came in his last six matches as coach and all in successive away games at FC , Athletic Club de Bilbao and RC Celta de Vigo. None of the above games, however, were in European competition as Real had failed to qualify the previous season. ∑ Fabio Capello guided AC to the first three UEFA Champions League finals in 1993, 1994 and 1995. He also lost a Champion Clubs’ Cup final as a Juventus player in 1972/73 (0-1 v AFC Ajax in Belgrade). He made 12 appearances, spread over three competitions, for ‘The Old Lady’ in the Champion Clubs’ Cup during the 1970s. ∑ Real Madrid CF began with a 25-game unbeaten run in all competitions before losing to FC Barcelona in a Spanish Cup match at the end of January 1997. They went on to win the league by two points from Sir ’s side and then, under Jupp Heynckes, lifted the UEFA Champions League title the following season, 1997/98, thanks to a 1-0 win over Juventus in Amsterdam. ∑ Their final league record in 1996/97 was: P 42 W 27 D 11 L 4 F 85 A 36. ∑ Only three members of Capello’s title-winning squad remain: Roberto Carlos, Guti and Raúl. The latter now has 247 goals from 521 games for Madrid, including a record 49 strikes from 94 UEFA Champions League games. He is one goal short of setting a record of goals scored in Champion Clubs’ Cup football, currently held by Alfredo Di Stéfano, who netted 49 goals in 58 games from 1955-64. Raúl is currently in third place in the Madrid all- time goals list behind Alfredo Di Stéfano (216/307) and Carlos Alonso (186/290). He recently extended his national team record to 41 goals from 82 games following his recent strike v San Marino. ∑ Real Madrid CF now have an overall UEFA Champions League record of: P 110 W 63 D 23 L 24 F 220 A 124. The games have produced 344 goals at 3.13 per game and are made up of 78 group games (W 47 D 17 L 14) and 32 knock-out ties (W 16 D 6 L 10). ∑ Real Madrid have drawn 0-0 only four times in 109 UEFA Champions League games: v Olympiacos CFP (a) on 05.11.97, BV Borussia (a) on 15.04.98, Manchester United FC (h) on 04.04.00 and FK Partizan (a) on 04.11.03. ∑ They are easily the most successful club in the short history of the competition with three titles (1998, 2000 and 2002) from eight previous campaigns to their name. ∑ Madrid, along with the most titles, also hold the UEFA Champions League records for: most games played; most wins; best overall win percentage; most points; highest points average per game; most goals for and against; the best goal average per game as well as most first place finishes in the group stage. ∑ They will become the first side to accumulate 150 points in the UEFA Champions League proper if they avoid defeat - based on two points for a win.

Juve have reached four finals in eight UEFA Champions League campaigns. The Turin side has lost five finals, which means they share the competition record with SL Benfica. ∑ By contrast, Real Madrid CF have nine wins from 12 attempts. ∑ Juventus last scored more than one goal in a UEFA Champions League game on 10.12.03 when they thrashed Olympiacos CFP, 7-0, in Turin. They went on to lose 0-2 on aggregate to RC Deportivo La Coruña in the first knock-out stage this time last year. Real Madrid – team news ∑ Since the winter break, the major novelty is Real Madrid CF’s new head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo. The Brazilian’s name can also be found as ‘Wanderley’ but his documentation confirms the Vanderlei spelling and this is the version adopted by the club. He becomes Real Madrid CF’s third coach of the season, following José Antonio Camacho (in charge for the opening UEFA Champions League game in Leverkusen) and Mariano García Remón (on the bench for the other five group games in which the team remained undefeated). ∑ It’s the first time that the club has had three different coaches in the first six months of a season. The previous record dated back to 1990/91 when was replaced, after 12 league games, by a tandem of Alfredo Di Stéfano and José Antonio Camacho. They were replaced by Radomir Antic 15 games later – on 22 March 1991. ∑ Vanderlei Luxemburgo was born on 10 May 1952 in Tinguá in the state of Río da Janeiro. He played at left-back for Flamengo (1974-77), Internacional Porto Alegre (1978-79) and Botafogo (1979-82) before making his coaching debut at Campo Grande in 1983. His long, long list of clubs continues with Rio (1983-84), Friburguense (1984), Al Ittihad – Saudi Arabia – (1984-85 as assistant coach), Democrata (1985-86), Fluminense youth team (1986-87), América (1987), Fluminense youth team (1987-88), Bragantino (1989-90), Guaraní (1991), Flamengo (1991-92), Pone Preta (1992-93), Palmeiras (1993-94), Paraná Clube (1995), Flamengo (1995), Palmeiras (1995-96), Santos (1997-98), Corinthians (1998-99), Brazilian national team (1998-2000), Corinthians (2001-02), Palmeiras (2002), Cruzeiro (2002-04) and, from May 2004 till he moved to Madrid in the New Year, Santos. ∑ He won the Paulista title with Bragantino in 1990; two with Palmeiras in 1993 and 1994; two more in 1996 and 2000; and then won Brazilian league titles in 1998, 2003 and 2004. He also took the European / South American title with Palmeiras in 1996 and won the Copa América with the Brazilian national team in 1999. ∑ He arrived with his assistant coach, Marco Teixeira, and fitness trainer, José Melo. ∑ Since Fabio Capello left in 1997, Real Madrid have appointed eight coaches. Vanderlei Luxemburgo began by winning a record seven league games in a row, which now stands as the best start in by a Real Madrid coach and it also equals the record set by Manuel Díaz Novoa at Sporting de Gijón in 1979/80. The speaker omitted the names of former AS Roma employees Fabio Capello, Emerson and Johnathan Zebina… ∑ The match produced some unusual statistics. There were 72 fouls (Juventus 38 – Roma 34) and nine yellow cards. It means they have taken 10 points from their last four games. ∑ Fabio Capello said ”We won three important points in a game where we were under a lot of pressure. It was also difficult for us because we knew about Milan’s last-second victory in Bergamo, so we had to win to stay level with them at the top of Serie A. I had to take out Del Piero - not because he played badly, but because we had to defend and with Mancini for De Rossi, Roma were becoming more and more offensive.” ∑ The media rated Thuram, Cannavaro, Camoranesi and Emerson as the best players. Injuries and suspensions ∑ Pavel Nedved is still recovering from the concussion he suffered in a collision with Raúl Bravo in the first leg and obliged him to spend several days under observation in hospital. He had been a doubtful starter in Madrid with a knee injury. ∑ Michel Salgado suffered a thigh muscle injury during the match and is still out. ∑ Raúl Bravo has now recovered from his left-leg muscle problems. ∑ Zinedine Zidane had to be withdrawn early in the game against Deportivo with a muscle problem close to his left hip. Doctors estimated his recovery time as between six and ten days and the club hopes that he will be fit to play against his former club. ∑ Raúl was in bed with flu last week and missed the games against Betis and Valencia. First Knock-out Round Second Leg Turin 09 March 2005 JUVENTUS - REAL MADRID CF Press Conferences and Training ∑ Juventus have stuck to their usual routine of training at the Sisport Centre (Corso Unione Sovietica 295) at 11.00 and holding their Press Conference at 13.30. ∑ Real Madrid’s Press Conference is at 18.30 at the Stadio delle Alpi and the training session in the stadium has been arranged for 19.00. Other information ∑ A new UEFA Champions League publication is available at Matchday 8 venues: the Results Summary Book – or Tournament Guide 2 as it’s officially known – which gives full details of the matches played in the group phase. ∑ There’s an important event attached to the UEFA Champions League match at Highbury between Arsenal FC and FC Bayern München. UEFA is stepping up its campaign to stamp out racism in football, as recent incidents have indicated that this particular crusade has yet to be won. UEFA is already taking tough disciplinary action against associations, clubs and individuals who fail to keep racism out of the game. But sanctions are only one side of the story and UEFA is intensifying the fight against racism by stepping up its partnership with the Football Against Racism in Europe network, known as FARE. Prior to the kick-off at Highbury, UEFA’s Director of Communications, William Gaillard, and Arsenal FC’s vice- chairman David Dein will be handing over a cheque for €400,00 to representatives from the FARE network with a view to financing further grassroots campaigns with fans, minority groups and footballing organisations right across Europe. ∑ One of the curiosities of this round is that only three of the 16 clubs are based in the capital city of the country they represent – Real Madrid CF and the two clubs. ∑ For the first time this season, there is a possibility of a penalty shoot-out. Incredible as it may seem, no UEFA Champions League tie has been settled by one. The only matches to be have decided in that way have been the 1996, 2001 and 2003 finals ∑ During the group phase of the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League, each club received a starting fee of 2.5 million Swiss francs, plus an appearance fee of 500,000 per game during the group phase (in other words, 3 million for six matches). The bonus for reaching the last 16 is 2.5 million francs. ∑ Taking into account the performance bonuses of 500,000 francs for a win and 250,000 for a draw, Juventus go into this round as the top earners with 10.75m francs, followed by FC Internazionale with 10.5m. , Werder Bremen, Chelsea FC and AC Milan have each earned 10.25m, while five other clubs (AS , , Real Madrid CF, Manchester United FC and Arsenal FC) have totalled 10m. Liverpool FC, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München and PSV Eindhoven have accumulated 9.75m, leaving defending champions FC Porto with the lowest revenue of 9.5m francs. As a very rough guide, three Swiss francs are around two euros. ∑ In following rounds, each of the eight quarter-finalists will receive 3 million and the semi- finalists will add a further 4 million. In the final, the runner-up will receive 6 million and the champion will pocket 10 million. ∑ In addition, clubs retain gate receipts from home games and receive payments from the so- called Market Pool. This is based on the proportional values of different TV markets and the of clubs competing from any specific country. It is a complex equation and precise figures are not available until later in the season. ∑ Last season, the English clubs were the top earners, with Chelsea FC receiving just over 44 million Swiss francs. The champions, FC Porto, totalled fractionally under 30 million francs, while the silver medallists, AS Monaco, finished in fourth place behind the three English clubs in the revenue league with earnings of just over 40 million.

Clubs from the same national association will no longer be kept apart, so everything is possible… ∑ This match is a special occasion for Zinedine Zidane, who returns to Turin to take on his former club. He joined Madrid 2001 after five years with Juventus, winning two Italian league titles and playing 151 times in Serie A from 1996. He was also a member of the side that lost successive UEFA Champions League finals in 1997 and 1998. He has since scored 38 goals for Madrid but his last European goal came one year ago this month (24 March 20.04) in the quarter-final win over AS Monaco in Madrid.

First Knock-out Round Second Leg Turin 09 March 2005 JUVENTUS - REAL MADRID CF Update

∑ The game has been totally sold out since two weeks ago and Juventus expect a new income record of €3.5 million. ∑ Temperatures are low in Turin but the weather is sunny and the pitch is in good condition. ∑ Pavel Nedved is still out of training after his injury in the Real Madrid - Juventus game. Team doctors expect him to be back in two weeks. ∑ Kapo is injured and Blasi is suspended. The rest of the squad is available as there were no other injured players after "the battle of Rome" last Saturday when there were 72 fouls during the game. ∑ Regarding his line-up, Fabio Capello commented "The defence will be Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro and Zambrotta. I have some doubts about the midfield and the forwards. I don’t think that Trézéguet is ready for 90 minutes. We absolutly need to score so I could start with the three forwards again as in Roma: Zalayeta, Ibrahimovic and Del Piero. Tacchinardi is ready to take Blasi’s place at midfield. That is a possibility but I will only decide on matchday." ∑ "This game will be a final and we start at minus one, because of the goal we conceded in Madrid. Two years ago our situation was a little bit better. We also lost in Madrid but we had scored a away goal." ∑ "I will talk to may players about Real only on the day of the match. I do not have to say a lot. They all know what this game is about.” ∑ Real are much better balanced since they have Gravesen in midfield. But we are confident. Our first win in Rome in five years will help us to start into the game with the right spirit." ∑ Alessandro Del Piero added "Finally we can play in front of a capacity crowd. This will help us I am sure. Two years ago it was easier - this time we have to score two goals and to concede none. This is the problem with the individually strong Real players.” ∑ “We must take the initiative in this game and versus Real we need a perfect contribution from each of our players." ∑ Vanderlei Luxemburgo commented “We have some minor problems with our line-up as Raúl and Zidane have both come back after illness and injury. I am confident they can play but I’m not sure that they are 100%. We know that we will have to play against a physically strong Juventus team and the contribution of Emerson in midfield is extraordinary. But the collective effort of the whole is normally the factor that decides games in their favour. We will be looking for the important away goal. We are not equipped to play for a 0-0 draw. This is maybe possible for the last five minutes but not for the whole 90 minutes.” ∑ “We know what this game is all about,” added Luís Figo. “Concentration and the ability to score away goals are the key factors if we want to survive. We lived a negative experience two years ago in Turin and last year in Monaco. This will not happen again.” ∑ “Of course we have great respect for Juventus and their athletic strength – and we know that both Trézéguet and Ibrahimovic are very good in the air. I remember that I missed an important penalty here two years ago. I haven’t forgotten that. But I don’t live in the past. This is another game and if it goes to penalties then maybe I can try again.”
