The Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine On Sept. 8, 1565, a small band of Spaniards celebrated Mass on the shores of North Florida in preparation for starting a settlement there. They named their new home St. Augustine in honor of the saint on whose feast day they sighted land. Thus were the seeds of Christianity sown in North America. St. Augustine is the site of the first permanent parish church, now the Cathedral-Basilica. The famed Santa Fe Trail origi- nated here. It was from here that Franciscan missionaries began the trek North and West to proclaim the Good News. It was here that the first schools and hospitals were established. It was not until March 11, 1870 that Florida, east of the Apalachicola River, was designated as the Diocese of St. Augustine. The growth of the church in Florida from this Mother Diocese to six additional dioceses and more than 2.1 million Catholics is a significant part of the story of the Catholic Church in the United States. Today, the Diocese of St. Augustine encompasses 17 counties spanning the northeast section of Florida from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. It covers 11,032 square miles and serves about 171,000 registered Catholics. • Bishop Estevez's Letter on Capital Punishment
Standing Up for the Dignity of all HUMAN LIFE A Pastoral Letter on Capital Punishment in Florida by Bishop Felipe J. Estévez, S.T.D. for the faithful of the Diocese of St. Augustine ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am considerably indebted to Dale S. Recinella for this pastoral letter on the death penalty. Dale has served as a volunteer lay chaplain for more than 20 years in the Diocese of St. Augustine ministering to death row prisoners. I have used his outstanding research in his three books extensively: When We Visit Jesus in Prison: A Guide for Catholic Ministry (Chicago: Acta Publications, 2016); Now I Walk on Death Row: A Wall Street Finance Lawyer Stumbles into the Arms of a Loving God (Bloomington, MN: Chosen Books, 2011); and The Biblical Truth about America’s Death Penalty (Boston: Northeastern University Press, 2004). I must also credit our multiple conferences and dialogues and personal visits together with his lovely wife, Dr. Susan Recinella, who collaborates closely with him in his ministry as a chaplain. I am also grateful to Michael Sheedy, executive director of the Florida Catholic Conference, for his contribution to the section on the Florida Catholic bishop’s remarkable foresight in advocating on behalf of death row prisoners in the last 50 years. I also thank Father John Gillespie, pastor of San Sebastian Parish in St. Augustine, for sharing his notes on Father René Robert’s ministry to prisoners in the Diocese of St. Augustine, which led to his brutal death. And his death has led to an incredible national and international impact on the culture of non-violence.

  • Statement of Florida Catholic Bishops on 34Th Anniv. of Roe V. Wade, Jan
201 W. Park Avenue * Tallahassee, FL * 32301-7760 * 850-222-3803 * www.flacathconf.org Statement of the Catholic Bishops of Florida on the 34th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade January 22, 2007 As we mark another year of the ongoing assault on unborn life initiated by the infamous Supreme Court decisions, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, we mourn the loss of almost 50 million brothers and sisters in Christ who have died prematurely through abortion. We cannot retreat from the fight to gain recognition of each baby in the womb as a unique individual created by God and not just a body part to be discarded at will. Laws are created to ensure a just and civil society, recognizing the common good but also guaranteeing the rights of individuals. The human being is to be respected and treated as a person from the moment of conception; and therefore from that same moment his rights as a person must be recognized, among which first and foremost is the inviolable right of every innocent human being to life. In each of the last two years, reported abortions in Florida numbered over 90,000. National polls indicate a continuing decline in support for unlimited access to abortion, and we are hopeful that laws passed in Florida will soon bear fruit by reducing the numbers of abortions in this state as they have in others. As we have for many years, we invite all women who need help in their journey during pregnancy to contact the Church for referral to the Gabriel Project or a crisis pregnancy center.
