VATICAN CITY | When he addresses, via video message, the U.N. General Assembly Sept. 21, Pope Francis is expected to speak about using the coronavirus crisis as an opportunity to rethink economic, political and environmental policies in a way that will benefit humanity and the earth. Since COVID-19 was officially recognized as a pandemic in early March, the pope has been urging individuals, organiza- tions and governments to recognize the inequalities the pan- demic has highlighted in economics and access to health care and education, as well as the ways current patterns of produc- tion and consumption have damaged the environment. Pope Francis began a series of general audience talks Aug. 5 about the principles of Catholic social teaching that can help the world recover from the pandemic and move forward in a way that is better for human beings and for the environment. He spoke about transforming “the roots of our physical, spiritual and social infirmities and the destructive practices that separate us from each other, threatening the human fam- ily and our planet.” During a news conference Aug. 26 in Rieti, , to launch a celebration marking events in the life of St. Francis of Assisi, Bishop Domenico Pompili replied to a comment about inter- religious cooperation by saying that Pope Francis was prepar- ing a new encyclical on “human fraternity,” a phrase used for a document on interreligious dialogue and cooperation signed in 2019 by Pope Francis and Sheikh Ahmad el-Tayeb, grand imam of al-Azhar. bishop’s coat of arms is distinguished by a sign of his rank. That sign, placed over a shield, is a version of an ecclesiastical hat that was worn in processions as late A as 1870. By heraldic tradition, the coat of arms includes the arms of the bishop and the arms of his jurisdiction, in this case the Diocese of Savannah, represented on the left-hand side of the shield. The personal coat of arms assumed by Bishop Stephen D. Parkes is rich in symbolism. The Lamb of God at the base of the shield recognizes the centrality of the Eucharist in both the life of the Church and Bishop Parkes. The Lamb is carrying the flag of victory (over death) which gives hope for the future. It also points to John the Baptist, patron of the Diocese of Savannah, who introduced Jesus as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” The fleur-de-lis at the top of the shield shows the Bishop’s personal devotion to the Blessed Mother. He served 16 of his 22 years of priestly ministry at Annunciation Catholic Church in the Diocese of Orlando, where Mary is their patron saint. The fleur-de-lis is also on the coat of arms for the Diocese of Orlando, for whom he was ordained a priest in 1998. The final component of the Bishop’s shield is the palm frond across the middle. This honors St. Stephen, who is both the patron of the Bishop and honors the date of his par- ents’ reception of the sacrament of matrimony on December 26, the Feast of St. Stephen. The palm itself is a symbol of martyrdom, hence used to represent St. Stephen, the first martyr for the Church.

Bishop Elect Stephen,

The Lord has blessed us with many gifts throughout our life.

One of those gifts was your touch in it, the touch that your words gave, your guidance with our faith, your witness to our family’s sacraments and accomplishments. Your support through your prayers and words has lifted us, given us strength and helped tether us to the cornerstone of our faith.

A blessing that we will give to you is that we will remember you, we will speak your name, we will pass your words of faith down to our children and grandchildren. We thank you for the faith you had in us and the faith you strengthened in us.

May we see each other again and take in the light of each other’s smile
