First of all, we would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Collage. As a revival of the former graduate publication, we wanted to showcase new talent and refresh the image of Colorado State University’s Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures. As an all-inclusive journal, in our first issue we hope to promote unity, a multi-cultural attitude, international relations, global literatures, and experiences abroad.! While the majority of contributors are graduate students, we have chosen to feature the work of one undergraduate student (Stella Karpierz) and one faculty member (Francisco Leal). We hope you enjoy their work as much as we have.! Thank you,! Jake Wedgworth, Leslie Davis, & Riley Ellis

Acknowledging the debate over the translation of Erlkönig as either Elf-King or Alder-King, I chose to use Alder-King in my translation because I envision the Erlkönig as more of an Ent, or at least a sort of anthropomorphic forest-spirit closely tied with trees and plants rather than the very humanoid image of an elf. This may well be a side-effect of having seen The Lord of the Rings far too many times. Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind? Who rides so late through wind and night? Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind; It’s father and child, deep in plight. Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm, He has the boy well in his arm, Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm. - He holds him fast, he keeps him warm.
Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht? - Tell me son, what troubles there be? Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht? Te Alder-King, Father, do you not see? Den Erlenkönig mit Kron’ und Schweif? - Te Alder-King with his crown and tail? Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif. - My boy, ‘tis naught but moonlight pale.
„Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir! “I love you child, come, go with me! Gar schöne Spiele spiel’ ich mit dir; For wonderful games I’ll play with thee; Manch’ bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand; Beside the sea await flowers bold, Meine Mutter hat manch’ gülden Gewand.“ As well as my mother with cloth of gold.
Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht, Oh father, oh father, do you not hear, Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht? - the promises Alder-King whispers in ear? Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind! Be quiet, my boy, stay calm, my child; In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind. - ‘Tis only the rustle of leaves in the wild.
„Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn? “Sweet boy, would you like with me to dwell? Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön; My lovely daughters should care for you well;
