MQACRC RESEARCH PROGRAM October 2011 – October 2012 The MQACRC’s overall theme of examining cross-cultural interaction via close analysis of texts and artefacts is advanced through three research programs: CULTURAL IDENTITY, CULTURAL CONTACT, and ACCULTURATION. These act as collaborative foci for individual projects (titles in italics below), to facilitate collaborative work. Projects within these research programs represent the key focus areas of the Centre: Egypt (from the Predynastic to Coptic periods); the Greco-Roman world (from Classical to Late Antiquity); and China and the Silk Road (full titles, descriptions, and researcher details for selected projects may be found in Appendix 1). They can be traced throughout Egyptian dynastic history, in textual sources such as spells of healing and protection, offering and dedicatory texts, and private letters, and in cult emplacements and objects from settlement sites. Protective divinities such as Bes, Taweret, and Hathor were favored, along with ancestors who could be deceased kin, local elite, or royalty. State-level deities were also supplicated. Central practices were offering and libation, and conducting rites of protection and healing, while there was also strong recourse to protective imagery. -

Whether it concerns who the pharaoh of the Exodus was, the background of Joseph, or the identity of Shishak, many Christians (and non-Christians) have wondered how these two topics fit together. This paper deals with the question, “How does ancient Egyptian chronology correlate with the book of Genesis?” In answering this question it begins with an analysis of every Egyptian dynasty starting with the 12th Dynasty (this is where David Down places Moses) and goes back all the way to the so called “Dynasty 0.” After all the data is presented, this paper will look at the different possibilities that can be constructed concerning how long each of these dynasties lasted and how they relate to the biblical dates of the Great Flood, the Tower of Babel, and the Patriarchs. She earned a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles where she majored in History, received College Honors, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. From 2007-2008, Julia was also a Departmental Scholar in the Department of Near Eastern Langauges and Cultures and wrote a thesis entitled “Political Implications of Hatshepsut’s Building Program in the Greater Theban Region.” After graduation Julia taught high school English and World History at High Bluff Academy in San Diego, California before enrolling in her Ph.D. program at Brown University in 2009. During her time at Brown University Julia has taught her own undergraduate course, “Daily Life in Ancient Egypt,” and taught for the Summer at Brown Program for five years, including the classes “Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs,” “Ancient Egyptian Religion and Magic,” and “Art and Archaeology of Ancient Egypt.” Julia also worked at the Brown University Writing Center where she received training in teaching English for English Language Learners. -

The author was required to conduct an expert review of an Egyptian false-door purchased several years earlier from an art gallery, in conjunction with colleagues. A detailed report based on the study was requested.2 The objectives were to certify the authenticity of the false-door and to establish its probable date of manufacture, and finally, to establish its possible archaeological provenance, which has been achieved with a good degree of certainty. The false-door is of special interest due to the atypical scenes represented on its left inner jamb, where priests are shown performing a series of rites. Our study focused on details of the iconographic, material, epigraphic, and manufacturing techniques that can be seen with the naked eye. No archaeometric physical analysis was performed. With respect to the technical aspects of the visual analysis, the monument was first documented photographically using an SLR camera in manual mode, without flash. -

Paul van Pelt, Nico Staring Previous examinations of ancient Egyptian graffiti have focused on textual graffiti and developed interpre- tations specific to this class of evidence. In contrast, relatively few studies have considered the communica- tive power and meaning of figural graffiti, presumably because of the inherent challenges that this data set presents to academic research. To counterbalance the current emphasis on textual graffiti, this contribution examines graffiti making in the New Kingdom necropolis at Saqqara using an integrated approach taking in both textual and figural material. In accordance with the imagistic principle of Egyptian magic, the authors propose that certain types of figural graffiti may be regarded as pictorial prayers in their own right, intended to ensure the permanent presence of the graffitist in the tomb, or to protect and beatify the deceased in the afterlife. Report on the Evolution of Funerary Architecture from Predynastic Pit-Graves, Through
Report on the evolution of funerary architecture from predynastic pit-graves, through the "mastaba tombs" introduced in the Nagada II period, to the pyramid complexes of the Old Kingdom (Using Abusir pyramid complex to describe the significance of its main elements). Pyramids are the visible apex of Egyptian burial practices. The physical structures are linked inextricably to the people’s ideology and their belief that physical life was the preparation for their eternal spiritual life. Predynastic and early Dynastic Egypt’s funerary architecture can be traced though a progression of improvements, each a distinct enhancement to burial practices. Redford (2001, volume 1, p.61) writes that the history of Egypt’s extant burials can be dated to “...the oldest cemetery in the Nile Valley (Gebel Sahaba)” c.12000-9000 BCE of a semi-nomadic tribe; bodies were buried within a shallow pit and in a contracted position. This practice "… continued to be used for the poor throughout Egyptian history" (David, 1988, p.35), although the orientation of bodies differed (see Figure-1). Established tribes waned, probably because of climatic change, until c.6000 BCE with the origins of settled communities.
