Uss Duncan ~ 2010 Reunion Events JACKSONVILLE REUNION EVENTS HISTORIC ST. AUGUSTINE ADVENTURE Regarded as the oldest city in the United States, together we’ll explore the incredible history of St. Augustine and Florida and discover how it grew and prospered under Spanish, British, French and American rule. Your professional guide will regale you with captivating historical accounts of the native Indians, Spanish Galleons, Pirates and the Revolutionary War. You will ride through the Fountain of Youth property and hear the fable of the fountain, Ponce de Leon’s discovery of La Florida, and his encounter with the natives. We tour all the major sites and stop at the Castillo de San Marcos, the fort that was never captured in battle. St. Augustine was also the first winter resort for the rich and famous during the Gilded Age. Hear how Henry Flagler built the most opulent hotels of the day and turned the city into the “Newport of the South. Your local guide creates an interactive atmosphere that is fun for everyone. Following the excursion, there will be time for self- exploration, shopping, and lunch, on your own, in this quaint little town. We’ll drop off on St. George’s Street, a reconstruction of “Old World Florida”, which is lined with stone houses with overhanging balconies and walled garden patios. The neighboring side streets harbor many historical sites, boutiques, gift shops, restaurants and cafes. This will be a wonderful day in Old Florida. U.S. NAVAL STATION MAYPORT TOUR & LUNCH Welcome aboard U. S. Naval Station Mayport, the second largest naval base on the east coast, and home to over 20 ships and several helicopter squadrons. The Aegis Class Destroyers stationed here were built at a cost of over $1 billion each and we have requested an escorted ships tour. Touring the ship is optional (active duty ships are not very “accessible”) and those not interested may visit the Naval Exchange. Afterwards we will have a hot lunch on base which is included in the tour price. KINGS BAY SUBMARINE BASE Visit the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, the east coast homeport for the Ohio-class nuclear powered ballistic missile (SSBN), reconfigured guided missile (SSGN) submarines, and the only base on the east coast capable of handling Trident 11 D-5 Missiles. The Base also serves as a key partner of the Fleet's submarine and ship launched Tomahawk Cruise Missile program. You will have a very special tour of the Base which will include the Trident Training Facility, simulated guns, and an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine or guided missile submarine (subject to availability at the time of the tour). Lunch will be on Base, and is included in tour price. This tour is limited to so please make reservations early. IMPORTANT: Since this is an active Trident base, there is always a possibility that base access may become restricted and our tour denied up until the last moment. Since buses will have been chartered and paid for, we cannot “cancel” the tour. The best possible substitution will be made should this situation arise. This however is rare. This tour is limited to the first 40 who sign up. Important Tour Notes: • There is extensive walking on this tour, no opened toed shoes, and no shoes with heels. • This tour is not wheelchair accessible. • You must be a U.S. Citizen to take this tour, and have government issued photo ID (like a Drivers License). • The Base requires the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number for all visitors; please provide this information on your reservation form if you are taking this tour. AMELIA ISLAND INSIDER & CRUISE Amelia Island is known as “Florida's Golden Isle”. One of a chain of barrier islands stretching from South Carolina, Amelia Island is a charming place - 13 miles long and two miles wide. Settled by the French, developed by the Spanish, named by the English and tamed by the Americans, Amelia is the only location in the United States to have been under eight different flags. Today, Amelia Island is a quaint, unique and upscale destination of reknown. Begin the day with a guided inside look of the Island’s most historical attractions including the “Silk Stocking District”, boasting some of Florida’s most elegant Victorian homes, Fort Cinch, and American Beach, the only beach open to African Americans until the 1960’s. Then time is your own downtown for shopping and dinner before boarding your sunset cruise. This 1 hour tour is the perfect way to relax and have fun at the end of your day in Amelia Island. Your captain will take you toward Cumberland Island’s southern shoreline and then glide back as you enjoy a spectacular sunset. Depending upon the tides and wind conditions, the cruise may include the Bells River area and the breathtaking marsh islands. A great day exploring a classic Florida community. JACKSONVILLE INSIDER AND BREWERY TOUR This unique two-hour tour of Jacksonville, the "River City" will highlight the defining sites of its history and cultural downtown locations. Commencing at the waterfront Jacksonville Landing, our guide will trace the city's roots to its origin as "Cowford". Learn of the Timuquan Indians, the area's first inhabitants and French and Spanish colonization 55 years before the Pilgrims landed in the New World. The historic neighborhood of San Marco will give the visitor a view of beautiful homes along River Road and its shopping district will be our location for lunch. Modern points of interest include the Jacksonville Veteran's Memorial Wall in downtown Jacksonville. This Memorial Wall is unique in that it lists the veterans of Duval County that have died during wartime service by the high schools in which they attended. Lunch will be at Jacksonville’s Premier Riverfront Restaurant, River City Brewing Company. Overlooking the Jacksonville skyline and the St. John’s River, this restaurant offers delectable cuisine and an on-site microbrewery. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour features an open-air gallery overlooking the floor of the Brew Hall, which offers an excellent step-by-step look at the all-Natural Budweiser brewing process. You will marvel at the speed and efficiency of the bottling and canning operations. Midway through the tour, relax in the Hospitality Room over complimentary tasting of the popular beers. ALHAMBRA DINNER THEATRE For years, season ticket holders, groups and first time customers have graced the halls of the Alhambra Dinner Theatre to experience professional Broadway style live theatre combined with a fine dining experience. Our show will be "The Rat Pack", so less theatre, more music! Alhambra received the "Best in Jacksonville Dining" award in 2013! When visiting the Alhambra, you walk the same halls that such extraordinary performers like Dorothy Lamour and Martha Raye once strolled. Built in 1967, the Alhambra Theatre and Dining is one of the few remaining dinner theatres in America. It is nationally known, and actors come from all across the country to audition. .
