Rotary International is an international service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non­political and and non­religious organization open to all. The 'Mission' of rotary is to provide service to others, promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through fellowship of business, professional and community leaders. The 'Vision' of Rotary is, 'Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves'. Rotary connects passionate people with diverse perspectives to exchange ideas, forge lifelong friendships and above all take action to change the world. Rotary values diversity and accelerates the contributions of people of all backgrounds regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, colour, abilities, religion, socio­economic status, culture, sex etc. The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA was formed on 23rd February 1905 by Paul P. Harris. The name 'Rotary' was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Currently 35,000 plus Rotary clubs exist in over 200 countries and territories. The principal motto of Rotary is 'Service above Self '. Rotary members, who spend 16 million hours each year, believe that they have shared responsibility to take action on world's most persistent issues. Rotary clubs work together a. To promote peace b. Rotary has contributed more than $ 2 billion to fight Polio, including matching funds from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and launching its Polio eradication programme with WHO, UNICEF and the U.S. centres for disease control. Rotary addresses the Global Corona virus crises. It supports to promote proper hand washing techniques, teach people other ways to stay healthy and supply training and medical equipment to health care providers. The contribution to Prime Minister Fund is Rs. 105 crore. Value of Covid related work done by Indian Rotarians is worth Rs. 95 crore. In India, Calcutta was the first Rotary Club in the main land of Asia. It was chartered with 20 members in 1920. Today 3895 clubs operate throughout India and membership is 1, 55,000 Rotarians. Rotarians are people of action. During this Pandemic, the Rotary community has demonstrated its 'Aloha' spirit, Aloha means mutual regard and affection. It is a concern for one another, who care, share and take responsibility. ROTARY DHARWAD IN ITS 80TH YEAR

Iam happy to note that our Rotary Club is celebrating 80th year of its service to humanity. It is the oldest club in our District and sponsored by Rotary Club Bangalore. It is amazing to know the wisdom of all those charter members who decided to embrace this social movement in those days.They were all men of eminence and were responsible for bringing many new things to Dharwad. It appears that the members then were deeply involved in bringing Karnataka University, starting electricity company and were in the management of Dharwad Gymkhana etc. and other notable service projects . I am fortunate to witness and participate in its Ruby Jubilee, Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee, and Platinum Jubilee. I did interact with few Charter members in my early days in Rotary. There were many ups and downs which we had seen in the club which is natural for any organization. I was invited to join Rotary by Rtn Narasinha Katti the owner of Katti Studio, the very famous one at that time. Our club was in a low ebb those days. Lions Club was doing extremely well and Giants club started just then and it was inaugurated by my father Late V.V. Deshpande. I had invitation to be a character member of that club and so also to join Lions club. I choose to join Rotary. The only reason perhaps is that I was taken to Mummigatti village for health Check ups regularly as that was the adopted village then. I was a free person then.We used to borrow stove from a house to boil syringes and give injections also. My friend Dr Kidiyoour a dental surgeon used to pull loose tooth of oldies without any anesthesia and and put it in a bowl to show how many he has extracted. That was fascinating and thus I joined our club in July/August 1979. As I said club was not doing well and once myself and late N.K Kulkarni were in a meeting when one of the senior leader said that Dharwad Rotary Club is dying club and may close down any time. This statement hurt both of us. When Rtn NK was the president he removed old chunk and increased the membership from 23 to 56 ie doubling it in 1985­86.The very next year I took it from 56 to 78 members and then onwards there was no looking back. We have produced five Governors so far. Our Club has been doing many humanatarian projects all through. Few important projects that come to my mind are a shelter and roof in the grave yard to help in avoiding rains during rituals, ward in Lourdes hospital, and Civil hospital, ambulances to police personnel. We had done a state of art Neonatal Intensive Care unit in District hospital, drinking water facility in civil hospital ,renovating maternity ward in Muncilple Corporation Hospial , dialysis unit which is handed over. The flag ship of our club is the Paul Harris Memorial School which we are running which is a reputed school of the city. We are now looking for the celebrations of 80th year with some meaningful projects for the community, We look forward to see the golden period again for our club with more younger members and and make it a vibrant club. Warm greeting for a New Rotary Year ! Beauty of Rotary is change in leadership at midnight of 30th June every year, right from club President to Rotary International President. New leader, new ideas, new contacts, new resources, better vision made Rotary not only sustain for 115 years but grown to a present level. “Madhuravani” official monthly magazine of Rotary Club of Dharwad. Madhuravani was not just a magazine, but an emotion for members of RC Dharwad, brings back the memories of the good old days when not just the Rotarians, but the Anns and Annets, waited every month to see their names, photos, birthday greetings etc. in the magazine. But over the years “Madhuravani” lost its place in the hearts of our Rotarian and family members. Enthusiastic and visionary leader of R.C. Dharwad for Rotary year 2020­21 Rtn A. C. Tahasildar wishes to bring back old glory of our club by publishing “Madhuravani”. I am extremely happy and wish that upcoming issues of Madhuravani covers Rotary news, Rotary Information, Action pictures of Projects, Achievement of Anns and Annets. It was in December, 1979 I was still a “Bride groom” when Late PDG N. K. Kulkarni and Rtn. M.K. Shevade introduced me to R.C. Dharwad during Rtn. Shrikant Mangasuli's year of Presidentship. Late Dr. Bhogishahan was a District Governor. Due to my professional commitments, I left Dharwad but enjoyed Rotary at R. C. Belgaum MT and at RC Harihar before returning back to my home town and home club in 1993. RC Dharwad being 1st club in District 3170 and had glorious past, Stalwarts like Shri Jayachamaraj Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, B. D. Jatti, S. Nijalingappa, DevarajUrs, Veerendra Patil, and Justice . S. Malimath visited and addressed our members. Inspite of many ups and down in R. C. Dharwad, our club sponsored many new clubs in Dist. 3170 like R.C. Belgaum, Dandeli, Gadag, Hubli, Dharwad Central, Dharwad Mid Town and many more. It had a great family atmosphere and was arranging Pot luck dinners, involvement of children by organising trips, games, Board meetingsand dinner at Rotarians home etc. R. C. Dharwad hosted 5 District Conferences. PDG Late A. B. Ramanand in 1966, PDG Dr. Girish Udapudi of Jamakhandi chose our club to host his District Conference in 1988­89. It was in 1994­95 when Late N. K. Kulkarni was a Governor, 1998­99 Dr. Rajan Deshpande and in 2006­07 when I had an opportunity to lead the District as Governor. Though our Rotary school was started in 1982, till 2015 it reached only up to Std. VII in a span of 33 years. Like our club, our school also had many ups and down. When I came to know from members of school committee that our school is facing acute administrative and legal compliance issues. I voluntarily took the responsibility of setting it right its Documentation, Accounts, and Records of previous 25 years. I immersed myself in a Six months marathon work. Since 2016, there is no looking back to the Growth, Transparency, Administration, Quality of Education, Working atmosphere work culture etc. In spite of many limitations about the space, ROTARY SCHOOL Dharwad now stands TALL when compared to other schools in Dharwad. Let us have meaningfull celebrations of 80 years of existence our club in serving the humanity. By the end of this Rotary year, I wish that R. C. Dharwad emerged as a “Vibrant Club” in our District. It is definitely possible under the current leadership, if we all members commit firmly to induct young and only young and enthusiastic professionals to our club.
