  • A-Ha to Return with New Album and Rio Spectacular for September 2015 and International Tour Dates for 2016
PRESS RELEASE A-HA TO RETURN WITH NEW ALBUM AND RIO SPECTACULAR FOR SEPTEMBER 2015 AND INTERNATIONAL TOUR DATES FOR 2016 Following on from the announcement that legendary Norwegian band a-ha are to reform to play the 30 th anniversary Rock in Rio music festival, the band are delighted to announce the release of a brand new studio album this autumn, with international tour dates to follow in 2016. The new album, Cast In Steel , will be the band’s tenth studio album, and the first new music by the group since the critical and commercial success of 2009’s Foot of the Mountain . Cast In Steel will be released on 4 th September 2015, three weeks before the band return to play the Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil, and thirty years since their debut single, Take on Me , reached number one around the world. * * * The Album When a-ha played the Oslo Spektrum in December 2010 to close the ‘Ending on A High Note – Farewell Tour’, it felt a definitive full-stop on the band’s activities. As Morten Harket says, ‘it has been a genuine and real disbanding. There has been no a-ha in the sense of the word during that time.’ For Morten, Paul Waaktaar and Magne Furuholmen, the five- year break has allowed them to explore a rich seam of various creative projects, both musical and artistic. The return came about in a simple, organic way, as Paul explains: ‘it started off very easy and low-key with Morten dropping by my studio at various occasions, and I would show him songs that I was working on.

OUR LIVELY ARTS: AMERICAN CULTURE AS THEATRICAL CULTURE, 1922-1931 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jennifer Schlueter, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Thomas Postlewait, Adviser Professor Lesley Ferris Adviser Associate Professor Alan Woods Graduate Program in Theatre Copyright by Jennifer Schlueter c. 2007 ABSTRACT In the first decades of the twentieth century, critics like H.L. Mencken and Van Wyck Brooks vociferously expounded a deep and profound disenchantment with American art and culture. At a time when American popular entertainments were expanding exponentially, and at a time when European high modernism was in full flower, American culture appeared to these critics to be at best a quagmire of philistinism and at worst an oxymoron. Today there is still general agreement that American arts “came of age” or “arrived” in the 1920s, thanks in part to this flogging criticism, but also because of the powerful influence of European modernism. Yet, this assessment was not, at the time, unanimous, and its conclusions should not, I argue, be taken as foregone. In this dissertation, I present crucial case studies of Constance Rourke (1885-1941) and Gilbert Seldes (1893-1970), two astute but understudied cultural critics who saw the same popular culture denigrated by Brooks or Mencken as vibrant evidence of exactly the modern American culture they were seeking. In their writings of the 1920s and 1930s, Rourke and Seldes argued that our “lively arts” (Seldes’ formulation) of performance—vaudeville, minstrelsy, burlesque, jazz, radio, and film—contained both the roots of our own unique culture as well as the seeds of a burgeoning modernism.

You put it in the soil, and that bulb grows every second that it’s attached to the earth. That’s why I think that every minute we are attached to the earth, we should be doing something.” —Ruth Asawa Ruth Asawa: A Sculpting Life By Joan Schoettler • Illustrated by Traci Van Wagoner “Art will make people better, more highly skilled in thinking and improving whatever business one goes into. It makes a person broader.” —Ruth Asawa Ruth Asawa believed in making the world a better place. She understood that exposing children to art was one path toward that goal. From the Japanese American internment camps to the creation of the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, Asawa’s life journey is one filled with family, art, injustice, inner strength, education, and arts activism. She drew upon her transformative life experiences and worked with unconventional mediums—using lines, space, and wire—to create sculptures that move people to this day. Touched by the celebration of Asawa’s life, author Joan Schoettler viewed exhibitions, studied Asawa’s creations, and consulted many who knew Asawa in a quest to portray the life of this remarkable woman. In a perfect complement, the thorough research by illustrator Traci Van Wagoner is vividly apparent in the quietly compelling depictions of Asawa and her life.

  • 1 This Was the Year That the Shadows Appeared As Singers Before a Pan
1975 This was the year that The Shadows appeared as singers before a pan-European audience. The earlier 1973 initiative had not produced the desired outcome and by 1974 they were in the wilderness and did not exist as a viable group. They got together to perform at the Palladium on 27 October of that year as a personal tribute to and for the benefit of the widow of BBC producer Colin Charman. BBC boss Bill Cotton heard them and suggested that they might like to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest the following year. They accepted, formed a working ensemble, and undertook a few local ‘practice’ gigs while preparing and practising the songs. The chosen song, [254] LET ME BE THE ONE, was one of six put forward for the UK’s entry in the Eurovision Contest of 1975, and was the last of the contenders performed over six successive weeks on Lulu’s BBC TV show at the start of the year. It was duly televised in Stockholm on 22 March but came in second to Dutch group Teach-In’s lyrically challenged ‘Dinge-Dong’ ~ English title ‘Ding-A-Dong’ (“Ding- A-Dong every hour,/ When you pick a flower …”), which impressed the British public sufficiently to enjoy a seven-week residence in the Singles charts (climbing to No.13). No such good fortune attended the release of The Shadows’ follow-up to their charting Eurovision Single, another piece from the same composer, the staggeringly inane, hopelessly unamusing [266] RUN BILLY RUN (“Closed my eyes, I tried countin’ sheep,/ Desp-rate Dan just looked like Bo-Peep,/ I can’t sleep”).

  • SHADOWS of the SEVENTIES an Article Covering the Shadows’ Most Creative but Criminally Overlooked Decade
SHADOWS OF THE SEVENTIES An article covering the Shadows’ most creative but criminally overlooked decade. By Chris Drake 1 In August 2013, Music Club Deluxe/Parlophone released a 2CD Shadows compilation CD entitled The Collection . The slipcase and inner insert featured a big close-up of the by now obligatory red and white Fender Stratocaster, which during the past 30 or so years has become synonymous with virtually any Shadows-related product. It’s an attractive and eye-catching image. What is worth remarking in this case is that the 35 tracks contained within come almost entirely from the 1970s – a period of the Shadows’ history in which there wasn’t a single red (or Salmon Pink !) Fender Strat in sight. But, in fairness, would a close-up of the scratch plate, body and other furnishings, all uniformly in black, have made the product stand out on the shelves? What is interesting also is that the period covered represents something of a commercial low-point for the band, with very little in terms of hit singles and albums compared to the previous decade. What it does contain, on the other hand, is some of the band’s most creative and impressive recordings and suggests that perhaps the Shadows’ output of the 1970s is worth listening to and evaluating after all. The basis of this article, therefore, will be the contents of MCDLX187: The Collection . Before venturing into the territory so comprehensively covered by the compilation, let’s just pause for a few moments to consider the period leading up to it and the way in which the Shadows seemed to prepare the ground for this new and potentially very exciting decade.
