Happy on one note but sad on the other. It was sad that we announced the passing of Bev Smith. The VBLCS has sent a card to the family and a number of members attended Bev’s funeral in support of Bob. Bev was a lovely lady who was described as an “Avid Collector”. She had membership with National and International societies associated with cans, labels, coasters and playing cards. Bev battled a number of illnesses however was always cheerful and keen to participate at our meetings. To Bob, we send our full support and condolences. We wished Marius Van Wyngaarden a very Happy 90th Birthday for the 13th of November and presented him with a pewter mug. Marius, Happy Birthday and I hope you have many more. On the label scene; Your Society and some of it’s members have donated labels, cans, coasters and other interesting items to support the Australian Beer Can Collectors Association who is to hold it’s annual Canathon in Adelaide on 12/13 January 2008. Those people interested in going to the Canathon may pick up some interesting memorabilia. Your contact is Bob Manogue who is a member of the VBLCS and the President of the ABCCA. Bob would love to hear from you. I mentioned recently about beer and wine. Yes it is out. Pepper Jack Ale from Saltrams, brewed by Matilda Bay Garage. It is a beer incorporating red wine. I describe it as a clean hop driven ale and quite spicy. I like it. I recently facilitated a meeting where Robert Hinterding of Sillyyak presented on brewing Gluten Free beer. It was an excellent presentation and at the end we tasted the Sillyyak and O’Brien lager beers. Those people that are interested in the technology of brewing a Sorgum based, gluten free beer, can get a copy of the paper if they write to me. Sadly people may have noticed the passing of The Beer Hunter, Michael Jackson. Michael was well known for his television series The Beer Hunter and the many excellent books he wrote on beer and whiskey. The New World Guide to Beer and Great Beers of Belgium are my favourites. I met Michael a couple of times and in discussion it was very clear he loved our emerging Ale Styles but more particular Sheaf Stout and Kent Old Brown. Lagers were not his favourites. Vale Michael. A man that did great promotions for the industry and product. 16 members are yet to renew their 2007/8 membership. I think the fee is very modest and members get very good return. In addition David Dobney, our Treasurer has forwarded to you a slip to update our records. Can this be returned promptly please with your money. Many thanks. Our 9th December meeting theme will be the Cascade Brewery. Now here is a challenge. Photos, labels, books, bottles and the odd can may feature. Don’t bring your home beer kits however your President won’t mind a bottle of Cascade Home Brew for a Christmas present. Club Tivoli offers a fine restaurant providing excellent German food and a range of beverages. Prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent. Give it a try. Remember the next meeting is on 9th December 2007 at 12.00 am with meeting and swapping of labels and breweriana conducted in a fine social atmosphere. Christmas cheer will follow the meeting. Remember 12.00 start. Cheers and happy collecting. Rob Greenaway OCTOBER 2007 MEETING NOTES The meeting was held at Club Tivoli in Windsor and commenced at 1.00pm. APOLOGIES Angus McEwan, Richard Carthew, Norman J Long, Phyl Godden, Graham Crompton, VALE Bev Smith Prior to the commencement of the meeting Rob Greenaway announce the passing of Bev Smith. A moment’s silence was conducted in remembrance of Bev. Our condolences were then passed on to Bob Smith and Family. MINUTES The minutes of the August meeting was read and any business arising was to be covered in General Business. FINANCE The Society’s finances are in good shape. A full report was tabled. The Treasurer announced that the Society has purchased the Alex Freer collection and is planning to recoup this cost through the tendering of Alex’s albums. The Treasurer is to forward a final notice for 16 unpaid subscriptions. CORRESPONDENCE Out - Kerry Freer letter with payment for Alex’s collection. - Australian Tax Office for information on Excise codes In - Australian Tax Office unable to supply information on Excise codes GENERAL BUSINESS A special welcome was made to a new member Mick O’Brian and his wife Sharon. Marius Van Wyngaarden celebrates his 90th birthday on 13 Nov 2007. On behalf of the Society, Marius was presented with a pewter mug, a bottle of MB Graystone 2007 and a card signed by members. Rob Greenaway outlined the tender process for Alex Freer’s collection. A document was forwarded to all members in the last newsletter. It was highlighted the albums are heavy and successful bidders have to pay postage or arrange pick up. Michael Bannenberg has offered to photograph some of these labels / albums to enable them to be put on our website. Ron Barker was on ABC 2 “The Collectors” demonstrating fire brigade memorabilia. Michael Bannenberg talked about the Maryborough Bottle Show held recently. It is Victoria’s premier exhibition and was of excellent standard. A number of members visited the show and enjoyed checking the bottles, jugs, labels and other collectables. It is worth putting it in your diary. Our Christmas meeting is on the 9th Dec and as usual finger food and a drink from the bar will be provided. Remember a 12.00 start George Crompton tabled the usual fine collection of recent foreign beer label magazines. George also talked about Scotty McKenzie, a member of yesteryear that was heavily involved with the Adelaide Labologist Club. Many members commented that Scotty was a remarkable and generous person in helping new members with labels. The brewery theme for the meeting was Swan. Cans, tap tops, labels and general collectables were present. Many thanks to Bob Kendell, Laurie Clark, George Crompton and Gary Mc Nair for contributing to the theme. Rob Greenaway advised that he has the Crown Lager 35 year AGM overprint for all members. He stressed members must read the fine print on these issues as some have not picked up the variation. Coding of beer labels: Rob Greenaway wrote to the Australian Tax Office but was unable to get details from them. Codes as examples are 28/2M Iceberg Lager in Victoria and 26/7H AIB in NSW. Please forward your findings to Jack Wilks who is collating details. 2002 / 2003/ 2004 Club Anniversary Labels on bottles were available via Umit Ugur at $9 a set. The labels will be issued through the Newsletter. Gary McNair reported the New Zealand and Australian CD catalogues are progressing. Gary is happy for any support. RAFFLES The raffles were then drawn and the lucky winners were; 1st B18 Bob Kendell. 2nd D23 Ray Everingham 3rd B28 Ivor Nicholson There were two sets of beers with labels of inaugural members raffled for members in the room. A total of 30 members attended the meeting, 25 signed the attendance book. Meeting closed at 2.00pm. Rob Greenaway [for Angus whilst on Holidays] AUSTRALIAN SMALL BREWERY UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2007 In an earlier Update (May 2007) I predicted that the number of small-scale breweries operating in Australia would reach one hundred by the end of 2007.
