Steven Tyler United States - 19 May 2011 Many contestants who audition for American Idol tell moving and emotional stories. Perhaps the most touching of them was told by Chris Medina who performed Breakeven by The Scripts at the auditions in Chicago. He told the judges of his fiancée Juliana Ramos who had suffered a brain injury after a car accident that left her in a wheelchair – able to move only her left arm and little more. After Chris sang, he brought his fian- cée to the audition room at the judges’ request. While Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez intro- duced themselves, Steven Tyler shook her hand saying: “Hi, girl. I just heard your fiancée sing, and he’s so good.” He added in a warm, tender whisper: “That’s why he sings so good, because he sings to you.” The New York Times called the moment “a stellar embrace” and praised Tyler as “deeply practiced and deeply humane” and an “unalloyed genius”.

MUSICAL BORROWING IN HIP-HOP MUSIC: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS AND CASE STUDIES Justin A. Williams, BA, MMus Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 0 Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop Music: Theoretical Frameworks and Case Studies Justin A. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch.

SNICK - Round 10 1. A stuffed animal from this man's childhood inspired a supposedly super-cool character that he voiced in the short-lived Fox Kids cartoon C-Bear and Jamal. A banker named Biderman utterly baffles a criminal played by this man by telling him things like "the horse is in the barn" and "the chicken is in the pot" in the film Blank Check; that character is named Juice. This man voiced a goanna lizard who sings "If I'm Gonna Eat Somebody (It Might As Well Be You)" in (*) FernGully two years before he played Emilio, a Miami cop who assists the title character of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. For 10 points, name this raspy-voiced man who also rapped the hits "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina." ANSWER: Tone Lōc (loke) (or Anthony (Terrell) Smith) <Vopava, Trends/Miscellany> 2. One song on this album was re-recorded with vocals by William S. Burroughs for an X-Files soundtrack. Initial printings of this album unusually had a translucent yellow disc tray. A song on this album quickly repeats the phrase "call me when you try to wake her" and is based on (*) "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." This album's original name, Star, referenced an ornament that appears on its cover, though it was ultimately named for the slogan of Weaver D's, a restaurant in Athens, Georgia. A single from this album describes "when the day is long, and the night is yours alone," while another poses numerous questions to Andy Kaufmann. "Man on the Moon" and "Everybody Hurts" appear on, for 10 points, what 1992 album by R.E.M.? ANSWER: Automatic for the People <Nelson, Music> 3.
