I pray this letter finds you all well and getting ready for summer! Our Festival is the weekend of June 3, 4, and 5 and I know we all look forward to a great weekend celebrating our faith and culture. We need everyone’s support and atten- dance! In June, we honor our graduates and their accomplishments. As a family, we all share in the pride of watching our young people excel and continue to grow and learn while strengthening their Orthodox faith. Congratulations! Our Paideia Bilingual Pre-School is celebrating its first graduating class and we could not be more proud of the young- est members of our parish. Marilena Tsirigotakis, our Director, has decided to pursue her graduate studies and will be leaving the school this summer. We thank her for the love and dedication she has given to our school and students and we send her our prayers and best wishes for continued success! Have you completed your 2011 Stewardship Pledge Card? It is not too late! We welcome and encourage your active Stewardship, for without our Stewards we could not accomplish all that God asks of us. You can make your pledge and/ or payment online at http://saint-katherines.org/stewardship. There is a pledge form on page 15 of this newsletter, as well. Wishing all a Happy Father's Day!

Your servant in Christ,

11 ICONS, ASCENSION, AND PENTECOST Rev. Theodore Chelpon

OUTSIDE THE CITY OF JERUSALEM is the Mount of Olives where Jesus gathered His disciples at the onset of His earthly ministry. It is also the place where He returned to His Father. At the highest point of the Mount, above the grotto of the Olive Grove or Eleona, stands a small Chapel of the Ascension, which has been converted into a mosque. This is the site where Jesus led His disciples and before their astonished eyes ascended into the heavens. On a rock is the imprint of His foot! Here at Saint Katherine we have two icons of this event, one in the dome and one in the narthex. As icons go, this is a rather simple one. It consists of Christ in His glory, the Theotokos, the disciples, two angels (often in white robes), rocks, and olive trees. There are two items I would point out and both concern feet. Yes, feet. Looking at the icon in the narthex, there are more apostles than there are feet. This is the “license” taken by iconographers who prefer not to cram their icon with so many feet. The other item shows a foot extending beyond the margin of the icon indicating that time and space cannot contain or limit the significance of the event. It is a “transhistorical” event as it were. There are several of these in Chris- tianity. The dismissal hymn of the Annunciation begins, “Today begins the salvation of the world….” Also the two kon- takia of Christmas begin, “Today the virgin….” You get the drift. This “today” of the hymnographers is expressed by iconographers by extending a foot or something beyond the margins. The icon expresses the joy of creation as it witnesses the Creator’s ascension into heaven. Humankind, as represented by the Apostles, finds its center in the Virgin Mary, usually the only person with a halo, as she maintains a tranquility. In her, the angelic and earthly worlds meet. Like many church Holy Days, the feast of the Ascension was celebrated vari- ously until it was finally established on the fortieth day after . Turning our attention to the icon of the Pentecost, it brings to mind the event that happened fifty days after Easter when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples as tongues of fire. When visiting the Holy Land, pilgrims will be shown an “Upper Room” in Jerusalem, the scene of both the Last Supper and the Pentecost. The iconography of Pentecost presents the classic group portrait of the early Christian community; except Matheas has taken the place of Judas, and Paul and the evangelists Mark and Luke appear together with the twelve apostles. The empty space between Peter and Paul evokes the presence of the Spirit of Christ. Some suggest it recalls the icon of Christ at age twelve teaching in the synagogue. The figure at the bottom is the “World” or “Cosmos” languishing in his prison of darkness, waiting to be set free by the preaching of the apostles, represented by the twelve scrolls that he holds. Neat, huh!

14 SPOTLIGHT ON STEWARDSHIP It took $3,014 per day in February 2011 to operate our church. $1,954 per day came from Stewardship. This figure represents about 64 percent of our monthly budget. Giving to the church is an opportunity—an opportunity to examine our pri- orities and values. It is an opportunity to express our thankfulness, to give of ourselves and grow in grace. It is an opportunity to participate in the work of God. Giving is an expression of our commitment and our willingness to serve. Come and see how you can grow through service to the Church!

Become a 2011 Steward of Saint Katherine Today!
