White men who were trappers, explorers, adven- tureres, frontiersmen, homesteaders, mission- aries, soldiers, and cowboys in the early Ameri- can West have been glorified and lionized in mo- tion pictures, television, and print. The same is true of some Indians, such as Chief , and . But what about black Americans and other min- orities in the old West? Even today, only a handful of blacks or whites know there were gun- slinging, rough, tough black and black counterparts to Tom Mix, William "" Bonney, , Frank and , the Dalton brothers, Will Rogers, and countless others. Yet, many blacks worked with and were friends of these men, performing the same feats --good and bad.
