Florida Following One driver in the field will go to battle on the soil of his home state. John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, is not only the local boy, but the last Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup driver to stand on the top step of the podium at Sebring after winning the second race of the week in last season. Dean also heads Sebring-based Sick Sideways Racing, which will field two other cars at the doubleheader event.

If any of the three Sick Sideways pilots can find their way to victory lane, it would be an extremely popular victory with the hometown fans. But if Dean is once again able to win at his home track, it would make the race weekend that much better for the local spectators.

Story Leads The SCCA Pro Racing Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires begins the 2015 campaign with a mixture of old and new. New series colors, thanks to brand new title sponsor Battery Tender, are the most eye-catching. However a crop of new drivers are going to test their mettle against series veterans, who in some cases have been around since the inception of the series in 2006. The close finishes, and the nimble Mazda MX-5 on which the series is based, are a few of these things that attracts these drivers to the series.

The 2015 season is also the last which will be run using the current generation of MX-5s. In 2016, the new-generation MX-5 will take to the track at circuits around the world. North America will be part of a larger plan to take this affordable and ultra-competitive form of sports car racing worldwide. The Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup will serve as a template from which to build. The worldwide nature of this class of racing will result in the first-ever MX-5 Cup World Championship to be held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Leading the hometown charge will be Sick Sideways Racing, led by John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, in his No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5. He is one of the defending race winners at this track, 5

Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Weekend Facts and Story Leads having won the second race of the weekend in 2014. Also on the team will be Dean’s long-time teammate Nathanial Sparks, of Spanish Fort, Alabama, in his customary No. 8 Bimmerworld MX-5 and rookie Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, California. Kemper took home the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge Championship, earning him the Mazda Motorsports Development Scholarship and an invite to run the Cup series. As such, Kemper will be running the Mazda colors in his No. 99 Royal Rugby/Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5.

ALARA Racing wins the award for having the most number of entries at this weekend’s event. Team principal Ara Malkhassian, of Houston, will lead a cadre of 10 cars in his No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5. The cast if full of veteran drivers with a couple new faces mixed in. Timothy Paul, of Mahopac, New York, is set to return for his second season in the series, at the controls of his No. 6 ALARA Racing/Cellmark MX-5. Brent Mosing (No. 10 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Lafayette, Louisiana; Zach Lee (No. 12 ALARA Racing MX-5), of San Antonio, Texas; Tim Probert (No. 26 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Houston, and Harrison Williams (No. 00 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Houston, make up the veteran core of the team. Devin Jones, of Mooresville, North Carolina, is returning to the series after a successful rookie season but is moving to ALARA Racing from CJ Wilson Racing, as he will be driving the No. 35 ALARA Racing/Veristor MX-5.

Sarah Montgomery (No. 14 ALARA Racing/Travel Lafayette, LA/Acadian Pawn MX-5), of Lafayette, Louisiana, will be making her first Cup start with ALARA Racing, who has captured the two most recent championship titles. Also making their series debut in ALARA Racing machines will be Keith Jensen (No. 32 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Dallas, and Matt Koskinen (No. 34 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Harper Woods, Michigan.

Atlanta Motorsports Group will bring a group of four hot shoes to Sebring as part of their team. Patrick Gallagher and Peter Portante, both former winners of a Mazda Motorsports Development Scholarships, will drive for the Georgia-based team. Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, will be at the wheel of the No. 44 Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5, while Portante, of Plainville, Connecticut, will pilot the No. 24 Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5.

Rounding out the squad will be Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Virginia, in the No. 49 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5 and Kyle Loustaunau, of Vacaville, California, in the No. 07 Mazda Motorsports Development/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5. Landy showed consistently improving pace throughout last season, finishing the season third in the championship and also completing the event sweep at the last race weekend of 2014 at . Loustaunau is the most recent Mazda Club Racer Shootout winner and will measure himself against some of the most competitive sports car racing fields in North America.

A new team, McCumbee McAleer Racing, running under the ModSpace Racing banner, have thrown their name in the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup hat with a three-car effort. Owners Chad McCumbee and Stevan McAleer are seasoned professional racecar drivers in their own rights, with McAleer having been crowned the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Champion in 2012. While both take part in other forms of sports car racing in their personal careers, their experience should allow them to help the three drivers they are fielding. Leading that group is series veteran Charles Paquin, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, at the wheel of his No. 72 ModSpace MX-5. Joining the fray will be rookies Nick Igdalsky (No. 27 ModSpace MX-5), of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, and Aurora Straus (No. 28 ModSpace MX-5), of New York.

Copeland Motorsports is the final multi-car team planning to race at Sebring. Last season, Dean Copeland, of Bowie, Maryland, captured double wins at . Driving his No. 7 Copeland 6

Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup Weekend Facts and Story Leads

Motorsports/Sync Speed Inc. MX-5, Copeland will try to break through for his first career Mazda MX- 5 Cup win at Sebring. Scheduled to join Copeland for the Sebring, as well as the remainder of the 2015 season, is rookie Hernan Palermo, of Houston. Palermo will be at the wheel of the No. 77 CMS/Brimtek/Sync Speed Inc. MX-5.

Two single-car teams are slated to round out the field at Sebring. Series veteran, and fan favorite, Beth Chryst, of Herndon, Virginia, will be at the controls of her No. 2 Studio Rhoad Marketing/Chryst Brothers Construction MX-5. Also fielding a single car will be Christian Tetzlaff, of Athens, Georgia. He is set to drive his No. 23 Lanier Technical College/MAZDASPEED MX-5.

In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, returning drivers Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut; Bryan Hixon, of San Antonio, and Robby Foley, of Randolph, New Jersey, will have to contend with a field of four other drivers vying for the Mazda Development Scholarship, which will be awarded to the season-ending point leader.

Koch Tallies first Mazda MX-5 Cup Win in Round One at Sebring

SEBRING, Fla. (March 13, 2014) – Rookie Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., started his bid for the 2014 SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires Championship on the right foot, winning Round One at Sebring International Raceway as part of the 62nd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. John Dean, of Sebring, Fla., finished second, followed by Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Va., in third.

Driving the No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports Development MX-5, Koch was scored as the leader only once during the race that average 77.919 mph around the 17-turn, 3.74-mile permanent airport course. However, it happened to be the most important lap, the last one.

Koch spent the entire 16-lap race in the lead group of cars, but spent most of his time in second trying to force then-leader Dean into a mistake. All the while, Koch was holding off challenges from Landy in third.

Koch had to wait until the last turn of the last lap to make his move for the lead. On the approach to Turn 17, Koch was able to take the inside line. Driving through the dirty, unused part of the inside of the turn, Koch was able to hang on and win the drag race to the line.

The marks the second year that a last-lap, last-corner pass was the decisive move of a Mazda MX-5 Cup race at Sebring. Last year, Elliott Skeer took a win over Christian Szymczak year in much the same fashion.

“I didn’t think I had anything for Dean Copeland and John Dean when they were up front,” Koch said. “If the opportunity arose I would have taken advantage, but then Copeland dropped out allowing me to get back up to Dean.

“Without a drafting partner I was able to get to Dean’s rear bumper, but he was getting out of the corners really well. I was having some problems getting the power down coming out of Turn 16. I was working to improve that the whole race. When it came down to crunch time, I was able to get a good run off 16 headed into Turn 17 on the last lap.

“I was surprised how emotional it was to win that race. I could feel the tears in my eyes after crossing the line. It’s a long season, but this is a great way to start the year.”

Throughout the race, Dean did everything he could have done to bring home the win. Starting from the pole in his No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5, Dean led the first two laps. Dean Copeland then took a turn at the front on lap three, until Dean reclaimed the lead one lap later. Two laps later, Copeland was back in the lead for two laps before his clutch gave out. Dean reclaimed the point and held it until lap 16.

“It was really close at the line,” Dean said. “I would have liked to have been the one to win the race, but we had a really good run. The car worked pretty well. I may have missed on a setting, but it worked well.

“I couldn’t break away from the field, and after two laps I stopped even trying to drive away from the pack. I just tried to keep the tires under me and ran a bit defensively so I could lead the most laps. It’s important to do that for championship points, but it’s just tough leading the last lap until the last corner and not getting the win.

“Turn 17 is so tough to defend, because if you do too much you run the risk of dropping back to third. [Koch] got a good run out of Turn 16 and was just able to squeeze by. I was hoping to try and hold the position around the outside, but both cars were just dancing through the corner. It got a bit risky, so I breathed the throttle to keep the car in second.”

Landy recorded his best career finish in the series, completing the podium in third. Landy drove his brand new 2014 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5 hard, constantly threatening to get around the leaders if a mistake was made. Landy also successfully defended his position after battling with Ara Malkhassian for the final podium position.

“My progression from last year to this year has taken a lot of hard work, both from me and the standpoint of the car,” Landy said. “The Atlanta Motorsports Group crew has done a wonderful job working on, and prepping, the car. You couldn’t ask for a better car at this racetrack.

“It takes a special finesse to get the most out of these cars, which is different from a lot of other cars. Third is a great way to start the year.”

In the No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5, Malkhassian made sure it wasn’t just a young man’s game at the front. He showed the mistake-free, quick pace commensurate with his experience in the series. He made sure young Landy earned his third-place finish.

Rookie Lucas Catania also made a good showing in his maiden race, finishing fifth in this Mazda MX-5 Cup field. Driving his No. 17 Atlanta Motorsports Group/N.Y. Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5, Catania was the second Atlanta Motorsports Group-supported car in the top five. 10

In the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class, Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, Calif., notched his second career win in the class. Driving the No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5, Kemper kept his nose clean, taking advantage of then-leader Robby Foley getting tangled up with another car.

“I didn’t qualify as well as I would have liked,” Kemper said. “The car just didn’t feel great. In the race, I had an awesome start and got into second by the end of lap two. Robby [Foley] and I battled until the double yellow came out, which hurt me and helped him.

“We kept running together after the restart until he [Foley], was taken out by some other cars. Entering Turn 7, he was hit by a couple cars that got on the brakes too late to make the corner.”

Bryan Hixon, of San Antonio, Texas, drove the No. 63 Blackmore Partners/xBorder Foods & Wine SBMX-5 to a second-place finish, followed by Johan Schwartz, of Charlotte, N.C., in the No. 98 Promatex/Pipefish/Instrumart SBMX-5.

Hometown Hero Dean Takes Mazda MX-5 Cup Round Two at Sebring

SEBRING, Fla. (March 14, 2014) – John Dean, of Sebring, Fla., scored an emotional victory in front of family, friends and supporters in Round Two of the SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires as part of the 62nd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida. Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., finished second, followed by Dean Copeland, of Bowie, Md.

Dean bounced back to take the 0.542-second win over Koch, following a second place finish in Thursday’s Round One which was decided by 0.053-second. The race was slowed to an average of 73.438 mph around the 17-turn, 2.74-mile permanent airport course due to a four-lap caution period brought out when Johan Schwartz and Zach Lee collided in Turn Three on lap six. Both drivers were okay following the incident.

This race marked Dean’s second win at the circuit in Mazda MX-5 Cup competition, however this win was comparatively more comfortable than his first win in 2012. Driving the No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5, Dean exerted his control on the race from the beginning by completing the opening 12 laps in the lead. On lap 13, Copeland took over the top spot, but that was short lived as Dean recaptured the position for the remaining two laps. En route to the win, Dean also lowered the race-lap record to 2:29.059 (89.360 mph).

“It’s so much fun to be able to win in front of my friends and family,” Dean said. “Yesterday was a bit of a bummer. I really wanted to win, but that just made me push harder today. I went back to the drawing board, talked to the BFGoodrich guys a bit, and was able to find a setting that was able to make the tire work today.

“Dean [Copeland] had a fantastic race, today. He got up there and it’s always fun to race with him because he’s clean, but very aggressive. That added some additional character to the top three. In the end, it may have helped me out that he was toward the front.

“This is my second win here, in Mazda MX-5 Cup, but I’ve also been on the podium in all six races that the series has been here. That’s really cool and I was really hoping to do that. I’ve got a lot of supporters behind me and the team, and it feels really good to bring home trophies.”

Driving the No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports Development MX-5, Koch was in a position to repeat his win from Thursday. For all but two laps, Koch was lurking in second waiting to pounce if the opportunity arose. However, passing the determined Dean, while holding back the charging Copeland, proved to be unfeasible.

“I was really hoping there wasn’t going to be a caution,” Koch said. “I was nipping at Dean’s heels for the first part of the race. It really came down to who was going to make the least number of mistakes. I would make one mistake, and it would drop me a tenth, then he would make a mistake, and I would gain a tenth.

“Once I got in a rhythm, I started to reel Dean in. When the caution came out, I was a little frustrated. I knew Copeland was right behind us and that we had been gapping him before that. Once he [Copeland] got back into the mix, it was a four-way battle for the lead, like yesterday. On the last lap, I was in third and was able to get by Copeland on the back straight and was able to move to P2.

“The series is extremely competitive, and it seems more that way this year than any other. With all the teams getting their stuff together, and Atlanta Motorsports Group coming back, it will be intense.”

Copeland notched his first podium finish of the young season, at the controls of the No. 7 Copeland Motorsports/Sync Speed Inc. MX-5. The finish came on the heels of a strong race, in Round One, that ended early due to a broken transmission.

“We had a horrible start,” Copeland said. “We got off in some slippery dew from this morning, in Turn One. Sebastian [Landy] and I got wide and slid a little. We lost the top two there, and spent the first half of the race trying to reel them in.

“Once the caution came out, it was on from there. We go out in the front with two laps left, and those guys just lined up on me. They got hooked up and I really didn’t have much for them. On the last lap we had some wheel spin out of Turn 16 and John [Dean] pulled away. It’s bittersweet. I thought we had a better car yesterday, when the transmission broke, but I’ll take it.”

Driving the No. 41 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5, Sebastian Landy finished Friday’s race in the fourth position. The finish marks Landy’s second top-five result in as many races.

Finishing fifth was Andrew Charbonneau, who drove the No. 15 ALARA Racing MX-5. The finish was a marked improvement for the SCCA National Champion driver who qualified sixth. In Thursday’s race, Charbonneau also started sixth but was unable to hold the position resulting in a 13th-place finish.

Bryan Hixon, of San Antonio, Texas, took the class win in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge, while driving his No. 63 Blackmore Partners/xBorder Foods & Wine SBMX-5. His win from the class pole puts him in the lead of the season-long championship point battle.

Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Conn., took second place in class, followed by Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, Calif., in the No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5.

The SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires travels to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to contest Rounds Three and Four, May 2-4.
