Novena in honour of the Holy Family: Carbury Parish has been very privileged in obtaining the Kildare and Leighlin Diocesan Petition Box for the World Meeting of Families for a Parish Novena to the Holy Family from Monday 7th of May to Tuesday the 15th of May 2018. The Novena will begin with 9.30am Mass in Derrinturn on the 7th of May. We will have the petition box in the church from early afternoon for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The official prayer for World Meeting of Families will be said at Masses during the Novena. At Thursday morning Mass we were joined by St. Conleth's N.S. for a special Mass in honour of St. Francis of Assisi. There was a blessing with the relic afterwards. We would like to thank Sr. Anastasia and the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of Littlehampton in Knock for their kindness in lending this relic to the Parish for the last few years. It has brought consolation to many sick people, in particular. There will be Family Rosary in Derrinturn Church on Sunday 13th May at 3 p.m.

Church teaching - Irish Bishops’ pastoral message: Our Common Humanity “Every one of us has a right to our life. It is not given to us by the Constitution of Ireland or by any law. We have it ‘as of right’, whether we are wealthy or poor, healthy or sick. All human beings have it. “For us as a society to now declare that any category of human beings should have that right taken from them would be a shocking step. It effectively says that unborn children do not exist or, if they do, they do not count. That is a manifest injustice”.

Reasons to cherish a culture of life; Life before birth At the moment of conception, 23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father combine to create a new, unique human life. The combined 46 chromosomes contain the entire genetic blueprint of a new human life including gender, fingerprints, freckles, eye colour and blood type. By day 21, a baby's heart is beating. Facial features are forming from week four. At just six weeks, the baby's eyes and eyelids, nose, mouth and internal organs have developed in their basic form. The first movements occur at seven weeks. From week eight the nervous system is beginning to respond. From week nine the baby can yawn. From week 12 the baby can suck its thumb. A stunning slideshow highlighting the development of life in the womb up to 12 weeks is available to view on our website www.chooselife2018.ie.

The Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin Petition Box for the World Meeting of Families has been in our Parish now for a few days. It is following Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and has been at Masses in Derrinturn and Kilshanroe. All Petitions will be brought to the Phoenix Park for mass with Pope Francis. Don't forget to pray for him this week too and for Bishop Diarmuid Martin and the team who are preparing to welcome all those visiting from abroad for the World Meeting of Families. The Box will be available in Kilshanroe Church at 7.30 p.m. Mass this weekend and it will return to Derrinturn Church for 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses on Sunday. There will be a family rosary on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Rosary Priest, Fr. Patrick Peyton, spent his life promoting the Family Rosary. "The Family that Prays Together Stays Together" and "A World at Prayer is a World at Peace" were great sayings of his. The Rosary is a great prayer. It helped to keep the Faith alive during Penal Times when it was difficult to have Mass in Ireland. Many families have a tradition of saying it together every day. The Visionaries at Knock on 21st August 1879 prayed it for hours in pouring rain during the Apparition. The World Meeting of Families will begin on the Anniversary of the Apparition, 21st August 2018. The Petition Box will be present at Masses in Derrinturn on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th May. It will visit Ticknevin School after Mass on Monday for a time and then return to Adoration in Derrinturn Church for the rest of the day. The Petition Box returns to Carlow on Tuesday afternoon.
