Through generic case studies of the emblem book, prose romance, epic, and country house poem, I show how writers used constancy’s semantic and contextual slippage to participate in key debates of the civil wars; Hester Pulter, Percy Herbert, John Milton, Thomas Carew, Mildmay Fane, and Andrew Marvell deploy constancy as they intervene in civil war polemic surrounding kingship, property ownership, liturgy, and England’s relationship with the wider world. These cases, I argue, show the interaction between writers’ reevaluation of constancy and their reevaluation of inherited literary traditions. In interrogating constancy, writers articulate and even inspire innovation in literary genre, thereby demonstrating not the destruction of literary form during the civil wars, but writers’ ability to accommodate established literary tradition to dynamic religiopolitical circumstances. Of course, the virtue existed, and was debated, long before the seventeenth century. During the 1640s and 1650s, however, the number of printed publications with variations of “constancy” in their titles surged (see fig. 1).1 Pro-Parliament pamphlets attempted to define The Constant Man’s Character (1649); Charles I’s defenders termed him “the most constant of martyrs”; supporters of the New Model Army declared themselves “faithfull and constant to the Good Old Cause” despite the imminent Restoration.2 When Eikon Basilike (1649), the hagiographic political apology attributed to Charles I, asserted the king’s “constancy to [his] Wife, the Lawes, and Religion,” opponents shot back, terming “the late Kings constancy” an “abuse of the word.”3 On June 24, 1659, the English House of Commons asserted its claim to the virtue, voting to add the phrase “and constant” to its loyalty oath.4 The ubiquity of “constancy” during the civil wars testifies to a broad, cross-factional contest over the meaning of the word itself, with “constancy” acting as a lexical flashpoint in 1 A sampling of printed publications referencing “constancy” and “constant” in the text itself shows a similar trend. This oath derives from the Oath of Engagement required of all members of the Rump, which was extended to all adult males in January 1650. “January 1650: An Act For Subscribing the Engagement,” in Firth and Rait, Acts and Ordinances of the Interregnum, 2:325-329; Worden, Rump Parliament, 2:219-220, 227. “The engagement was imposed on the nation chiefly out of panic,” Worden notes, as Parliament feared Charles II’s alliance with the Scots. Rump Parliament, 227. v debates ranging from the legitimacy of monarchy to proper ecclesiastical worship to the relationship between England and Scotland—in short, every major ideological contest of the civil wars. Many words functioned as similar lexical flashpoints, such as “innovation” and “liberty.”5 Yet the word “constancy” is unique, not only in the irony of its use—appearing with greatest frequency during the most inconstant time in English history—but also because the very presence of such debate turns the virtue into a self-defeating paradox: as various interlocutors compete for the right to define and claim “constancy” for their own political or confessional ends, they rely upon and enact the virtue’s semantic and contextual inconstancy. In 1643, for example, a subtitle of the Solemn League and Covenant adjured “all good Christians to the constant keeping of [the Covenant],” citing the virtue no less than three times in its short text. Even as the Covenant allied the Scots with the English Parliament against the king, it swore to “preserve the Rights and Priviledges

    Milton’s Paradise Lost: Previously Unrecognized Allusions to the Aurora Borealis, and a Solution to the Comet Conundrum in Book 21 clifford j. cunningham National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand This article reveals that John Milton employed an allusion to the aurora borealis in book 6 (79–83) of Paradise Lost, unrecognized in more than three centuries of scholarly analysis. Two other likely allusions, and one certain, to the aurora have also been identified. This research casts doubt on the long-held belief, made popular by the astronomer Edmund Halley (1656–1742), that no notable aurora was visible in England in the seventeenth century. After examining an overlooked note by the English historian William Camden (1551–1623), this article explores the possibility that Milton actually saw an aurora. A solution is also presented here to the long-standing conundrum of the comet near the “Arctic” constellation Ophiuchus in book 2 (707–11) of Paradise Lost. Abstract My thesis explores the way in which the Italian language and literary culture contributed to John Milton’s early development as a poet (over the period up to 1639 and the composition of Epitaphium Damonis). I begin by investigating the nature of the cultural relationship between England and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods. I then examine how Milton’s own engagement with the Italian language and its literature evolved in the context of his family background, his personal contacts with the London Italian community and modern language teaching in the early seventeenth century as he grew to become a ‘multilingual’ poet. My study then turns to his first published collection of verse, Poems 1645. Here, I reconsider the Italian elements in Milton’s early poetry, beginning with the six poems he wrote in Italian, identifying their place and significance in the overall structure of the volume, and their status and place within the Italian Petrarchan verse tradition.

The cycle continues; the bell rings, and the dog eats his treat. But soon Pavlov’s dog has become so accustomed to the cycle that the bell rings and the dog is already salivating, awaiting the treat that always comes next. While a seemingly harmless experiment on a dog, Pavlov’s observation reveals an often-overlooked aspect of the human state – one’s susceptibility to conditioning. Whether a sound, a color, an action, or merely a word – an image is projected that suggests how one should live and interact. While the all-pervasive influence of images dictating reality seems to be a modern phenomenon, it traces its roots to the imposing pyramids of the Egyptian pharaohs or the expressive statues of the ancient Greeks.

    1 Ruth Connolly St John’s College, Cambridge, MS S.23 St John's, MS S.23 is a miscellany of fifty-seven poems, consisting of lyrics, odes, elegies, dialogues, songs and a brief epithalamium, a variety of forms linked thematically by its compiler’s interest in works which are in dialogue with both other poems and other people. These are social poems, intended to persuade, delight, commemorate or denigrate their addressees, and to initiate a conversation with their wider audience. Several mingle the rivalries of writers with a contemplation of the bonds forged between men as close friends or as fathers and sons (both biological and adoptive). Almost all are composed in the idiom of dialogue and mimic in their forms and themes the social rituals of conversation and exchange. This is a small miscellany, its writing block measuring 17.5cm x 14.5cm, bound in paper covered in thin vellum, a standard practice in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which made use of recycled scraps of vellum to provide tough, durable and cheap covers. The presence of catchwords throughout suggest the text was copied before being folded, stitched and bound and the edges of some lines came dangerously close to being trimmed during the cutting process. Stiff sewing supports are visible in the spine and extend into the covers. The secretary hand used to enter the majority of the miscellany’s poems is intended to facilitate quick copying, but both the titles and authors of poems are carefully entered in an italic hand, revealing a concern with attribution that is not always found in miscellanies from this period.

Moreover, with a new wave of feminist criticism appearing in the 1970s, such critics as Catherine Gimelli Martin, Gina Hausknecht, Maria Magro, and Harvey Couch have asserted that Milton’s divorce tracts are not only predictive, but that they promote the rights of women in divorce law in a way that has made Milton nearly prophetic. However, this thesis disputes the idea that Milton is supportive of modern gender equality within his divorce tracts, and asks such questions as: Does Milton attempt to gain an equal opportunity to divorce for both genders in his work? Does he desire divorce for the betterment of both spouses? And, finally, does Milton offer women any protection following a divorce? These questions are answered by means of closely examining Milton’s primary text, as well as multiple historical variables, such as religion, language, societal norms, and common outcomes of divorce for women. Through an examination of these factors, it is ultimately deciphered that Milton is not supportive of gender equality in divorce law, and thus, his divorce tracts are not predictive of modern divorce legislation.

    Hull History Centre: Papers of the Preston Family of Moreby U DDPR Papers of the Preston Family of Moreby 1331 - 1992 Biographical Background: The Preston family originated in Westmorland but were living in Holker by the seventeenth century. The second son of George Preston of Holker, Christopher Preston (b.1639) became a Leeds merchant. The family remained as merchants in Leeds through the rest of the seventeenth century and Christopher Preston's grandson, John Preston (d.1710) was an alderman and mayor of Leeds in 1692. Papers relating to the pew he purchased in Leeds church are in the collection. One of his daughters married Marmaduke Lawson (b.1685) of Moreby whose estates passed to the Preston family after he died without issue. The Preston family made good marriages in the early eighteenth century. William Preston (d.1772) married Ellen or Helen Farrer in 1721 and she brought a marriage portion of £600 and ultimately family estates as represented in the estate papers in the collection. His son, also William Preston (1723-1791), married Elizabeth Kilvington in 1756 and her marriage portion was £4000. When he inherited Moreby from Marmaduke Lawson he left Leeds to reside there. His brother, Henry Preston (1737-1808), stayed in Leeds and married Ann Fourness. Two of their sons died as young men in 1804 and their youngest son, also Henry Preston (1779-1837), married Maria Ann Crompton, ultimately succeeded to Moreby after the death of his uncle and became High Sheriff in 1834. His other uncle, Thomas Preston (1742- 1827) became vicar of Scalby and died childless, his estate passing then to Henry Preston's son, Thomas Henry Preston.
