VROOMAN

For possible explanations of the Vrooman ancestry in Europe, consult Josiah B. Vrooman: His Ancestors and Descendants by Lora Vrooman Randall and Florence Vrooman Houghton. El Paso, TX: Carl Hertzog, Printer, 1946. Josiah B. Vrooman, subject of this book, was a distant collateral relative of our ancestor Hendrick Meese Vrooman.* "Tradition says that the Vrooman family traces back to Count Lamoral van Egmont, Prince of Gavre." Thus far there appears to be nothing factual to support this tradition.

For another possible explanation of our Vrooman family's relationship to the Egmonts and the history of the Vrooman coat of arms, see Grace Elizabeth Vrooman Wickersham and Earnest Bernard Comstock, The Vrooman Family in America: Descendants of Hendrick Meese Vrooman Who Came from Holland to America in 1664. Dallas, TX: Authors, 1949, p. 9. William J. Hoffman in "An Armory of American Families of Dutch Descent" has information on the Vrooman background and a somewhat technical analysis of the Vrooman coat of arms. 1

The Vroomans are not our only ancestral family with possible connections to the Egmont family of Holland. In the original contract between the Patroon Van Rensselaer and Corne/is Segerse van Voorhout, executed in Holland previous to Corne/is 's departure for America, the latter signed his name "Corne/is Segerse van Egmont. "2 There were other branches of the Egmont family than those which descended from the Count.

Baptismal records were found in various churches in Leiden, Holland, relating to the Vrooman family of the Hendrick Meese Vroomam who immigrated to New Netherland.3 Two of Hendrick 's brothers, first Pieter Meese Vrooman and then Jacob Meese Vrooman, had preceded him to the Dutch colony.4 As per Dutch naming patterns, the three men were the sons of one Bartholomeus Vrooman. From the Leiden church baptisms it appears that Bartholomeus also had at least one daughter, Maritje Bartholomeus Vrooman.5 This is the extent of what is known of Bartholomeus Vrooman and he does not appear to have come to America. 6

Reconstruction of the family of Hendrick Meese Vrooman from information gleaned from the Leiden church records and other sources is as follows:

Adam Vrooman, born 14 September 18497 in Holland. [This agrees with his age as it appeared on the ship's list.]8 Eva Vrooman, born about 1651.9 Johannes [Jan] Vrooman, baptized 15 February 1653 in Mare Kerk, Leiden. Sponsors: Peter Meus Vrooman and Catharine Johannes. 10 Kathlyntje, baptized 5 August 1657 in Hooglandsche Kerk, Leiden. Sponsors: Josyntje Rebauts and Maritje Bartholomeus Vrooman. 11 Bartholomeus, baptized 4 June 1659 in Pieters Kerk, Leiden. Sponsor: Maritje Bartholomeus Vrooman.12 Hendrickje, baptized 20 March 1661. Sponsors: Margarita Kannemaus and Geertruyd Mentius. 13

Hendrick Meese Vrooman may have been born about 1618, and probably married about 1648. Although not noted in the baptismal records, his wife was purported to have been Geertruy Johannis, whose death preceded the family's coming to America. 14

Hendrick and his children were passengers on the ship De Eendracht from Holland arriving on 19 July 1664. The children's ages were noted as 15, 13, 11, 7 and 5. Daughter Hendrickje appears not to have survived as there is no child on the ship's list of corresponding age. 15

As early as 15 March 1665 Hendrick is mentioned in the accounts of Jeremias Van Rensselaer "for pruning the trees in the colony's garden." 16 After initially coming to Albany, Hendrick moved to Kinderhook, then Stone Arabia and in 1677 settled in Schenectady, his village lot being on the north side of State Street. 17

Purportedly Hendrick Vrooman was a miller by trade. 18 He was married at least twice. By 1671 Hendrick is known to have married a widow, name unknown, whose husband had been a mason. 19 Harman Janse Ryckman, a mason, died in Albany in 1667 leaving a widow, also name unknown.20 About 1691, Grietie Ryckman, daughter of Harman Janse and widow of Jacques Corne/isz Van Slyck became the second wife of Adam Vrooman, son of Hendrick Meese Vrooman. 21 This Ryckman/Vrooman family association begs the question: Could the mason's widow Hendrick Meese Vrooman married in 1671 have been the widow of Harman Janse Ryckman? At the Ordinary Session held in the Court at Albany, 12 June 1677, Geertruy Barentse, plaintiff, sued the wife ofHend . Meuse, defendant. The plaintiff demands of the defendant 31;2 beavers for clothes which she bought for her daughter. The defendant's husband, Hend. Meuse, appearing, says that the agreement was that payment could be made in any currency The honorable court, having heard the pleading on both sides, condemn the defendants to pay the plaintiff the 31/i beavers, or the value thereof, within the space of 14 . 22 d ays, cum expenszs.

Hendrick Meuse Vrooman and his son Bartholomeus, and sons Jan and Adam and their families were living in Schenectady in February of 1690, the time of the infamous Schenectady Massacre by the French and their Indian allies. This Vrooman family suffered mightily. Murdered were Hendrick Meuse, Bartholomeus, and Adam's wife Engeltje Blom and their baby, along with two negroes belonging to Hendrick. Adam's sons, Barent and Wouter and a negro belonging to him were carried off to Canada, the sons later to be redeemed.23

Jan Hendrickse Vrooman and his family must also have endured the massacre as Jan 's and Adam's names appeared on a March 1690 list of Schenectady survivors receiving provisions.24 On 4 July 1680 Jan had married Geesie Veeder, daughter of Symon Volkertse Veeder. 25

Jan and Geesie 's daughter Jannetje, who was born 23 July 1682,26 also a massacre survivor, grew up to marry Arent Bradt on 14 October 1704.27 Jan Vrooman made his will on 24 April 1732, however, the dates of his or Geesie 's or Jannetje 's deaths are not known. 28
