Can you imagine we are already in the season of Lent? Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent season. We feel the need to participate in a Mass or service and have ashes imparted upon us even though it is not a holy day of obligation. Even if people do not go to Mass on a regular basis, will take up the various Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, but particularly fasting in the form of “giving up” something. It is important to consider that there is something stirring spiritually within these brothers and sisters. Those who are very active in the life of faith can either dismiss them or accompany them into deeper life in Christ, in and through his Church.

How we are going to do that? We are going to do that by using well the disciplines of Lent – prayer, fasting, and almsgiving – as ways in which we can witness Christ more faithfully to our brothers and sisters and deepen our encounter with him. In his Lenten message last year, Francis made this invitation once again, “Above all, I urge the members of the Church to take up the Lenten journey with enthusiasm, sustained by almsgiving, fasting and prayer. If, at times, the flame of charity seems to die in our own hearts, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew.” REGULAR MASS SCHEDULE The “eagerness” that comes from prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, is not of our own Saturday (St. Anne): 4:30pm making. It is the work of the Holy Spirit and one in which we cooperate. The Sunday (St. Charles): disciplines of Lent are not ends in themselves. They are means to an end, greater communion with Jesus Christ. We are challenged by these practices to focus our 8am, 10am, & 12pm attention not on ourselves, but more fully on God and neighbor.

Weekday Masses Lent offers a perfect opportunity to facilitate spiritual regeneration. A focus on our Monday & Wednesday: neighbor returns us to those who are spiritually searching and arrive on Ash 8:30am (St. Charles) Wednesday or “give something up” for Lent. It all Tuesday & Friday means less attention on ourselves and more prayer for (except 1st Friday): them, uniting our fasting with and for them, and 9:00am (St. Anne) giving of our time to them, especially to listen and accompany them back into living more deeply the life First Friday: 8:30am (St. Charles) of faith. Not an easy task, but a sacrifice that, if lived First Saturday: 8am Holy Hour & well and authentically, could assist others in coming 9am Mass (St. Charles) to Easter joy! Wishing you a graceful season of lent! CONFESSIONS: 3:00pm Saturdays at St. Anne Blessings, 6:30pm Tuesdays at St. Charles Fr. Hendrico Rebello SAC

Academy Office Hours: Monday Friday 8am 3:30pm Preschool (3 Year Olds) St. Charles Academy is blessed to offer a faith-based preschool program. We offer a 3-days or 5-days a week program beginning in the Fall and it runs 8:15 am to 3:15 am, with before/after school latchkey if needed. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!” (Matthew 19:14) Our Early Childhood Program at St. Charles has a playground that meets safety standards and is developmentally appropriate for our smallest students. We are state certified and offer hot lunch! We also use puppets to help the students discover the alphabet! Many of you may remember learning with the Letter People when you were younger and you will be pleased to know that they are still being used today in many schools including here in the St. Charles’ preschool class. The Letter People Program has been updated and the curriculum now includes Social Studies and Science concepts.

Our preschool is a faith and play-based learning environment! “Don’t underestimate the value of play. Children learn and develop: - cognitive skills – like math and problem solving in a pretend grocery store - physical abilities – like balancing blocks and running on the playground - new vocabulary – like the words they need to play with toy dinosaurs - social skills – like playing together in a pretend car wash - literacy skills – like creating a menu for a pretend restaurant Play and learning go hand-in-hand. They are not separate activities. They are intertwined. Think about them as a science lecture with a lab. Play is the child’s lab. It reduces stress and helps your children grow emotionally. It is joyful and provides an outlet for anxiety and stress.” (By: Laurel Bongiorno)
