Private Penry Morgan whose home was at Oakfield Road, Cwmbran, had served his term with Colours and was in the Reserve, when war broke out. He rejoined his regiment and after passing unscathed through several engagements, he was severely wounded in the fighting at Neuve Chapelle, the lower part of his leg being shattered by a shell on 12th March 1915, necessitating Llantarnam amputation. He was repatriated to Hammersmith hospital, London, (St. Michael) Morgan Penry 12980 Private 1st - - 31-Mar-1915 26 where he died of his injuries on March 31, 1915. He was given a Churchyard, full military funeral and was buried in St. Michael's church at Monmouthshire Llantarnam, nr Cwmbran, Monmouthshire on April 4, 1915. Whilst at Hammersmith he was visited by his wife, daughter and mother and had appeared to be progressing favourably, but a relapse set in and he passed away at the early age of 26. Husband of Nelly Jones, of Monmouth. Buried South-East of Church.
