Our 2020 Gomes Vineyard Sparkling Albariño is a light and fresh sparkling wine with notes of gooseberry, kumquat, and stonefruit blossom. It is a fantastic aperatif wine and is guaranteed to pair so many favorite recipes including grilled octopus! wine to enjoy with fresh foods Vineyard The Gomes family has been farming on Andrus Island since the 1800’s sparkling when they immigrated from Portugal, where Albariño (Alvarinho) is grown extensively in Vinho Verde near the Atlantic Ocean. This site has deep, rich ALBARIÑO ES VINEYARD A young soil, well fed from the Sacramento River. It is dry farmed without cultivation and is transitioning to organic farming certification. GOM Winemaking (Traditional + Modern) After harvest, grapes were pressed whole cluster and settled for 2 days as juice. Clear juice helps to retain the purity and focus of this wine. The juice was fermented in tank with native yeast at 60-65°F for 3 weeks. The fermen- tation sediment was kept with the wine until bottling without the addition of sulfur dioxide or the presence of malolactic fermentation. The wine was bottled with fresh yeast and a small amount of sugar. After 4 months in bottle, the yeast had consumed the sugar, the sediment E was removed, and we added back a small amount of wine and sugar. After a light dosage, the bottles were capped again in order to preserve the natural youth and freshness of the wine. We prefer crown caps as a final closure. They are safe and easy to open, and they are trusted across the I S T E world to age wines before disgorging (including Champagne!)     GRAPES of PORTUGAL Alvarinho This northern grape is one of Portugal's finest and most character- ful. It was one of the first Portuguese grape varieties to be bottled as a single variety. Its full-bodied, subtly fragrant white wines are easy to recognize, their complex but delicate aromas reminiscent of peach, lemon, passion fruit, lychee, orange zest, jasmin, orange blossom and lemon balm. The wines are delicious young, but they can also age well, often for ten years or more. Alvarinho grows mostly along the River Minho, right up in the north of the Vinho Verde region - the northern Vinho Verde sub-regions of Monção and Melgaço are its famous heartlands. Compared to other Vinho Verde, it makes richer wines, higher in alcohol wines. Alvarinho vines are vigorous, and care is needed to restrain their exuberant vegetation, yet grape yield is low, the bunches small, the grapes very pippy. Antão Vaz This is one of the most prized varieties of the Alentejo, until re- cently grown almost exclusively around Vidigueira. Well suited to the warm and sunny climate on the great plains of the Alentejo, it is reliable and productive, consistent in its ripening. The bunches are big and not too tightly packed, the grapes large, with tough skins. As a rule it produces firm, full-bodied, well-structured wines. Made as a single variety, it has lively aromas, with hints of ripe tropical fruits, tangerine peel and something mineral, along with good structure and body. If picked early, it gives wines with vibrant aroma and crisp acidity. Left to ripen longer, it can reach high levels of alcohol, making it a good candidate for barrel maturation.

In the vineyards and winery of this imposing estate, where a mysterious tower has stood untouched since the 15th century, this tradition and legacy are infused into high-quality white wines. TASTING NOTES Clear and bright with a young, greenish tone. An intense aroma with ripe citrine notes; limes and orange blossom to the fore. Refreshing on the palate with aromatic citrine notes and a firm, but very well-integrated, acidity. This wine has a balanced and crisp finish. HARVEST YEAR A year characterised by low rainfall and above average temperatures. These conditions caused a delay in the vegetative cycle. The harvest year also registered low-scale humidity, which was reflected in reduced incidences of disease on the vine. The resulting fruit had very good maturation levels. WINEMAKER: António Braga VARIETIES: 70% Loureiro, 30% Alvarinho WINEMAKING Vinification took place at the Quinta de Azevedo winery. On arrival, the grapes were carefully treated and gently destemmed, in order to fully preserve their character. The channelling of the must is done using temperature controls and protected from oxidation by the use of inert gases. Soft crushing follows in a pneumatic press with some pre-fermentative maceration. Alcoholic fermentation took place at temperatures between 16ºC-18ºC, using selected yeasts, particularly the native yeast QA23.

Portuguese wine is part of the ancient traditions introduced to the region by ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, and mostly the Romans. It started to export its wines to Rome during the Roman Empire. Modern exports developed with trade to England after a treaty in 1703. Portugal has the oldest appellation system in the world, the Douro Valley. This region and Vinho Verde region, in the Northwest produces some of the world's finest, unique and highest value-added wines. Alentejo and Dão regions produces fruitful flavour wines, suitable for a casual wine drinker. Portugal has two wine producing regions protected by UNESCO as World Heritage: the Douro Valley Wine Region (Douro Vinhateiro) and Pico Island Wine Region (Ilha do Pico Vinhateira). Portugal has a large variety of native breeds (about 500), producing a very wide variety of different wines with distinctive personality. The Oxford Companion to Wine describes the country as having "a treasure trove of indigenous grape varieties." In Portugal, the wine classification is done by Verde ("Green", Vinho Verde Region) and Maduro ("Mature", the rest of the country). With the quality and uniqueness of its wines, the country is a sizable and growing player in wine production, being in the top 10, with 4% of the world market (2003). The country is considered a traditional wine grower with 8% of its continental land dedicated to vineyards. Only the highest mountain peaks are unable to support viticulture.

  • Albariño Tempranillo
    Albariño Albariño is the primary grape used to make dry white wine in the Rias Baixes (Lower Inlets) section of the Galicia region of Northwestern Spain. Considered by many to be Spain's premier quality white wine, Albariño is also known in Portugal as Alvarinho and often used as a component of Vinho Verde. Weather conditions in the Rias Baixes are generally cool, windy and rainy. Vines must be trained high and open to allow winds to dry them out and avoid the on-going threat of rot, mildew and other fungal diseases. Notably, Albariño grapes develop thick skins here, contributing to their intense aromas. Typically, wines made from Albariño are very aromatic, often described as having scents of almonds or almond paste, apples, peaches, citrus, and flowers or grass. Albariño wines are particularly suited to seafood due to their bracing acidity This grape's inherent tartness should be embraced in youth, for wines made from albariño do not age well, and the vibrant aromas begin to noticeably fade within months of bottling. Tempranillo Tempranillo is a primary red wine grape for much of Spain, especially those from the Ribera del Duero and the Rioja Alta. It is also a key blending varietal in Port and known by the name of tinta roriz in Portugal's Douro Valley. While its varietal character is somewhat vague, its aromas and flavours often combine elements of berryish fruit, herbaceousness, and an earthy-leathery minerality. Rarely bottled as a stand-alone varietal, it is most frequently blended with grenache, (aka garnacha in Spain), carignan (aka mazuelo in Spain) and, more recently, cabernet sauvignon.
