NOTES OF THE NIGHT

This is anticipated to be the third game in a row where the Flyers have had their entire roster available to play, with no players out due to injury, illness or suspension. The Flyers have lost 128 man games to injuries this season across 10 separate players.

The Flyers had a total of 168 shot attempts over their last two games – 83 vs. NYI and 85 vs. NJD. They had 47 shots on goal vs. NYI, which was fourth time this month and the 10th this season that the Flyers have had 40 or more shots in a game. The Flyers are averaging 61.9 shot attempts per game this season, which breaks down to an average of 31.9 shots on goal per game, 16.1 shots per game that are blocked, and 13.9 per game that miss the net. They have had 70 or more shot attempts 14 times this season, including a season high of 92 on Oct. 29 vs. Pittsburgh.

In 48 games this season, the Flyers have scored the first goal 16 times, which is the second-fewest in the league only to Colorado. They are 9-4-3 when doing so. The Flyers have allowed the game’s first goal 32 times, which is the most in the league; they are 14-15- 3 under that circumstance. The 14 wins when allowing the first goal are tied with Pittsburgh for most in the league.

The Flyers have been in and out of penalty trouble over their last five games, allowing two power plays to the opponent in two of them (NYI, WSH) and a total of 21 in the other three (7 to NJD, 6 to BOS and 8 to VAN). The Flyers spent a total of spent a total of 35:13 shorthanded over those three contests. Prior to the Vancouver game, the Flyers faced 16 total shorthanded situations in the seven previous games combined.

The Flyers scored 105 goals over their first 32 games through December 14, which at the time ranked third most in the league and was an average of 3.28 goals per game. Since then the Flyers have scored 25 goals in 17 games, an average of 1.55 goals per game.

Steve Mason will move into sole possession of third place in Flyers history in wins by a goaltender with his next victory. Mason needs four games to pass Doug Favell for third place in games played. Ron Hextall (240) and Bernie Parent (232) are first and second in wins; past that, nobody has more in team history than the 93 that Mason and Wayne Stephenson both have.

Brayden Schenn continues to lead the NHL with 11 power play goals. Schenn had a five-game scoring streak come to an end with the against Washington, which matched a career high, and he also had a career-high four-game goal streak snapped. Schenn has scored eight of the Flyers’ last 10 power play goals dating back to Schenn’s 3-ppg game vs. Dallas on December 10.

Ivan Provorov continues to lead the Flyers in average time on ice (TOI) this season, having now climbed to a season average of 21:19. Provorov played 18:53 Sunday vs. Washington, snapping a streak of 32 consecutive games in which he’d played at least 19 minutes. He’s played more than 20 minutes in 26 of the last 30 contests. The NHL has kept track of TOI since the 1998-99 season, and since that time, the Flyers record-holder among rookies at season’s end is Braydon Coburn in 2006-07, when he played 20:58 per game over 20 games after he was acquired by the Flyers at the 2007 trade deadline.

Hakstol, 47 (7/30/1968), comes to the Flyers from the University of North Dakota, where he served as the head coach of the school’s hockey program for 11 seasons. During that time, Hakstol’s teams posted an overall record of 289-143-43 (.654). The Warburg, Alberta native led UND to the NCAA postseason in each of his 11 seasons, including seven appearances in the NCAA Frozen Four, most of any program in the country during that span. North Dakota won three regular-season conference titles under Hakstol (WCHA 2008-09 and 2010-11; NCHC 2014-15). He also led UND to four WCHA playoff titles (05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and 11-12). 46 of Hakstol’s players at UND played professionally in 2014-15 and 20 played in the NHL, including Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks and Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. UND produced a total of 42 NHL draft picks during Hakstol’s tenure, including eight first-round picks.
