Since then, both conflict and compromise have occurred among the Europeans, Malays and Chinese, as well as other regional minorities, resulting in two regional dichotomies: (1) socially, the indigenous (Malays) vs. the outsiders (Europeans, Chinese, etc.); (2) politically, the rulers (Europeans and Malay nobles) vs. those ruled (Malays, Chinese). These features have a direct impact on economic development. A retrospective survey of regional political development and demographic features are therefore needed to provide a context for the later analysis of economic development. 1. Political development The formation of Singapore, Johor and the Riau Islands was far from a sudden event, but a long process starting with the decline of the Johor-Riau Sultanate in the late eighteenth century. In order to reveal the coherency of regional political transformations, the point of departure of this political survey begins much earlier than the researched period here. State-Owned Enterprise (SOE): The Role of SOE Entrepreneurship in Nation-Building Efforts, 1970-2014 Fary Akmal Osman Since the early twentieth century, the study of entrepreneurship has been inspired by the Schumpeterian concept of entrepreneurship as innovator as well as an agent of change in the economy. Many emerging economies, particularly in Asia, established state-owned enterprises (SOE) as a national development strategy. Today, many SOEs operate using a variety of approaches and play active roles, including as cross-border investors. There are several SOEs in Malaysia at the federal and local government levels. This paper analyses the reasons for these SOE’s outstanding performance, focusing on the relationship between SOEs and entrepreneurship, the role of SOEs in cultivating local entrepreneurs, the characteristics embedded in Johor Corporation (JCorp) and how entrepreneurship changed over time. As a state enterprise in Malaysia, JCorp adopted a unique business position and investment strategy to become a major global player in its core enterprises. This study reveals that JCorp acting as an SOE entrepreneur successfully built an organisation with more than 250 local companies in various business sectors and services incorporated under a single umbrella. There are 379 directors within the group and a total workforce of about 63,000 people. Tremendous efforts were made by the SOE to educate Malay entrepreneurs and professionals through the enhancement of knowledge and skills, networking, sharing of experience, and management expertise. Introduction This research is motivated by the common observation in many countries, and throughout Asia that state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have performed poorly or failed to perform at all. -

While it’s the most populous state in the country, tourism has taken a back seat to economic development (see the boxed text, p257 ) leaving the state with some great off-the-beaten-path destinations for those who are up to the challenge. Some of Malaysia’s most beautiful islands, within the Seribuat Archipelago, lie off the state’s east coast. They attract their fair share of Singaporean weekenders, but remain near empty during the week. Many of these islands are prime dive territory, with similar corals and fish that you’ll find at popular Tioman Island ( p274 ) but with fewer crowds. These islands are also blessed with some of the finest white-sand beaches in the country, which fringe flashy turquoise waters and wild jungles. For more adventure head to Endau-Rompin National Park or climb the eponymous peak at Gunung Ledang National Park. These jungles offer the same rich flora, (very elusive) fauna and swashbuckling action that visitors flock to experience at Taman Negara in Pahang, but JOHOR JOHOR once again crowds are rare. Anywhere you go to in the state beyond the capital will involve some determination: either by chartering a boat or joining a tour. The effort, however, is well rewarded. Four of the focal points will be located in the Nusajaya-Johor Bahru-Pasir Gudang corridor (Special Economic Corridor -(SEC)). Shakor bin Borham1, Siti Mashitoh binti Mahamood2 1Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia [email protected] 2Universiti Malaya [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper will discuss the role of corporate waqf Johor Corporation (JCorp) and its contribution in fulfilling the Islamic social responsibility in Malaysia. As a government-owned corporations (GLCs), JCorp through its subsidiaries namely Waqaf An-Nur Corporation Berhad (WANCorp) is seen to have its own approach in contributing to society as a Islamic social responsibility in this country. Through waqf, JCorp not only managed to introduce a form of contemporary waqf, known as corporate waqf but was able to implement various welfare programs to the Muslim community through the profit dividend of units of donated exclusively. This study aims to review the extent to which the implementation of corporate waqf JCorp has contributed to the Muslim community as a socially responsible company in the country. To meet this goal, this study used two main research methods namely data collection methods and data analysis methods. The study found that in December 2010, totaling over RM3.6 million has been donated through implementation of waqf with three main programs as welfare and charity, human development, education and entrepreneurship capital, and special projects.The study concludes with several recommendations for improvements to strengthen the implementation of JCorp corporate waqf based on its great contribution to the Muslim community in Malaysia.
