FTBOA.COM First Crop Sires Popular as Florida-bred Tops Day One BY BROCK SHERIDAN Hip 69, a Florida-bred filly by first crop sire Stay Thirsty was the sale topper on the first day as she lit up the money board at $180,000 on a bid from Stanley Hough. Out of the Seeking the Gold, stakes-winning mare Broadway Gold, she is a half-sister to Grade 2 stakes winner Broadway’s Alibi, Grade 3 stakes winner Golden Lad and Grade 1 stakes-placed and stakes winner R Gypsy Gold. She worked a quarter-mile in :22 2/5 at the Under Tack show. She was consigned by Ocala Stud who also bred the filly. “I just loved her pedigree,” Hough said. “I trained the mare and have watched everything out of her run. I also like Stay Thirsty, he’s off to a good start, but I got her mostly because of the mare.” Hip 107 was purchased for $150,000 by Francis Vanlangendonck for SAC Racing from the consignment of Eddie Woods, Agent. The bay filly is by first crop sire The Factor and is out of the stakes-pro- ducing mare Charismatic Lady, by End Sweep, making the filly a half- sister to stakes winner Dad’s Crazy. “She is just a nice filly that is very athletic,” Vanlangendonck said. “She fits our program well and she is also by a hot sire.” Michael Hall purchased Hip 204 for his Breeze Easy LLC for $150,000 from the consignment Thoroughbred Championships Train- ing Center. The bay colt is by Harlan’s Holiday out of Desert Queen, by Wavering Monarch, making the colt a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Marylebone and stakes-placed runners Unigold and Shiva Ryan. “I liked the way he breezed and I like his breeding,” Hall said. When asked what he had planned for the colt, he said he hopes to race him at Saratoga later this summer with trainer Troy Wismer. Hall also went to $150,000 to buy Hip 277. Yola Humor is a bay filly by Distorted Humor out of the graded-stakes-placed mare Ex Caelis by Fusaichi Pegasus. Ex Caelis is also a half- sister to stakes winner Le Rossignol. The tracks want the IRB to proceed with a rule change allowing their racing offices to have discre- tion over which races are carded so as to increase wagering by using races with fuller fields; the Illinois THA claims the change would create chaos and dis- courage shipping horses to the state. Other IRB agenda matters are a new Arlington stall application the Illinois THA said would institute a "facility fee," and regular approval of "recapture"—a mid-1990s regulation allowing tracks to compensate for revenue losses by taking a percentage from purse accounts money.

    YAHWEH vERsus BAALISM A THEOLOGICAL READING OF THE GIDEON-ABIMELECH NARRATIVE WOLFGANG BLUEDORN A thesis submitted to Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities April 1999 ABSTRACT This study attemptsto describethe contribution of the Abimelech narrative for the theologyof Judges.It is claimedthat the Gideonnarrative and the Abimelechnarrative need to be viewed as one narrative that focuseson the demonstrationof YHWH'S superiority over Baalism, and that the deliverance from the Midianites in the Gideon narrative, Abimelech's kingship, and the theme of retribution in the Abimelech narrative serve as the tangible matter by which the abstracttheological theme becomesnarratable. The introduction to the Gideon narrative, which focuses on Israel's idolatry in a previously unparalleled way in Judges,anticipates a theological narrative to demonstrate that YHWH is god. YHwH's prophet defines the general theological background and theme for the narrative by accusing Israel of having abandonedYHwH despite his deeds in their history and having worshipped foreign gods instead. YHWH calls Gideon to demolish the idolatrous objects of Baalism in response, so that Baalism becomes an example of any idolatrous cult. Joash as the representativeof Baalism specifies the defined theme by proposing that whichever god demonstrateshis divine power shall be recognised as god. The following episodesof the battle against the Midianites contrast Gideon's inadequateresources with his selfish attempt to be honoured for the victory, assignthe victory to YHWH,who remains in control and who thus demonstrateshis divine power, and show that Baal is not presentin the narrative.
