Then when the gold size, which is a type of tinted varnish, dries to the correct tack level, the gold leaf is then pressed onto it.” The gold that Bruce used was 23.5 carat and 98 percent pure, making it suitable for the outdoors. It was also so delicate it adhered easily. “Being unaffected by sun and weather, this gold doesn’t need a clear coat or protective varnish. And it will also easily outlast any paint or other coating,” he said. Transfer gold is lightly pressed onto wax paper, making it easier to handle when working outside and in the wind.
