THE READING FROM THE OF THE HOLY APOSTLE PAUL TO THE GALATIANS (1:11-19) Brethren: For I would have you know that the which was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother.

Alleluia, Tone 3 v: In You, O Lord, have I hoped; let me never be put to shame! v: Be a God of protection for me, a house of refuge in order to save me!

THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT LUKE (16:19-31) At that time Jesus said to His disciples: “There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, `Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’” COMMUNION HYMN: Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise Him in the highest! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Five of the seventy apostles are remembered by the Church on October 30: , Tertius, Mark, Justus and Artemas.

The five all have interesting stories—some became bishops, some were martyred, and one was the son of Joseph, the man betrothed to Mary. But the best known to us is Cleopas, to whom the risen Christ appeared on the road to Emmaus.

Cleopas and his equally disheartened companion agree with the other followers of Christ that the news of His resurrection brought by the women was an "idle tale" (Luke 24: 11), not to be believed. Now they are walking the road to the village of Emmaus together and talking about it all.

Jesus joins them, and their sad expression is as revealing as the forlorn tone of their words: "We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel." They do not recognize Him; they only know that what they hoped for has ended in disappointment.

Here is where Jesus honors their intelligence and ability. He refrains from excoriating them for not knowing Him. He does not reveal Himself with a blast of glory that will completely overwhelm them and make it impossible not to recognize Him. Instead, He reminds them of what they already know—the Old Testament prophecies and "in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." He lets their minds and hearts work toward recognition.

When they reach the village, Cleopas and his companion see that Jesus apparently intends to travel on. They invite Him to supper, still not knowing who He is, but glad for His company. At the table He again does nothing that will compel them to recognize Him. He just does the simple, warm thing He did so often during their years together. He blesses and breaks bread, and gives it to them. And that is how they come to realize who He i s. Jesus honors them by allowing their discovery to be their own.

There is a striking example of the way God honors us in Genesis 2:20, where we read that Adam "gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field." There is no suggestion that God prompts Adam; the names are completely what the man wishes them to be. In Genesis' own words, "...whatever the ma n called every living creature that was its name" (2:28b).

The Qu'ran describes the naming of the animals quite differently. The chapter entitled "The Cow" tells us (8:29) that Allah "taught Adam the names of all things." Then Allah places these things before Adam and says, "Tell them their names." This is pure recitation, not at all the honor Genesis accords Adam by l etting him use his abilities to create names.

That honor is among the multitude of gifts given by the One who "gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age" as Paul writes in Galatians 1:4, one of the readings for this day.

CHARITABLE OUTREACH At last month’s parish council meeting Mary Stevenson of Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties made a presentation concerning giving food assistance to those in need. She presented an opportunity for our parish to become involved in the greater Flint community by hosting the Catholic Charities Food Van once a month in our parking lot. Catholic Charities partners not only with the local Catholic Churches but also with any Church or group that would like to obey the Lord’s command to feed the hungry and clothe the naked (Matthew 25:35 ff) The parish council unanimously approved this plan for our parish to participate in outreach to those in need in our community. The van will come to our parking lot on the appointed dates. The van will be staffed by volunteers from Catholic Charities. Then everyone from Burton and all of greater Flint can come to the food van to make their donations of food items on those days.

Donations of the following non-perishable items will be collected
