Remarks about Ordovician Trilobites of the Baltic Glint following Ivantsov et al. The trilobites of the St. Petersburg area (Russia) are highly appreciated by collectors. But precise data on these fossils are hardly accessible, due to problems of languages and the rarity of published scientific works dealing with them. Using the studies of Ivantsov and later authors, I will present a review of the stratigraphy of these (mainly asaphid) trilobites and discuss the history of investigations on them. The Back to the Past Museum: the first museum dedicated entirely to trilobites Enrico Bonino, Carlo Kier & Luc Hennion The Back to the Past Museum, Carretera Cancun - Puerto Morelos Km 27.5, Bahia Petempich, Puerto Morelos Quintana Roo, Mexico, 77580. info@backtothepast.com.mx Created in 2008 in Cancún (Mexico), the Back to the Past Museum is the first private museum entirely dedicated to trilobites. With more than four hundreds of specimens, all of exceptional quality, this museum represents an ideal environment for promoting these fascinating fossil arthropods to the public. The Museum is especially committed to its educational function; providing detailed scientific descriptions of specimens on display and publishing books, thematic posters, and digital animations. More recently, an effort has been made towards giving access to this exceptional collection to scientists. Permanently evolving, the Back to the Past Museum represents a good example of how a hobby like collecting trilobites can turn to more ambitious objectives: promoting these amazing fossils to a large public and supporting the scientific research on them. In this contribution, the origins and the structure of the museum, the nature of its collections, and its future projects will be presented, with particular emphasis on the scientific contributions we can make. Why did the UV-A-induced photoluminescent blue–green glow in trilobite eyes and exoskeletons not cause problems for trilobites? PeerJ 3:e1492 https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.1492 Why the UV-A-induced photoluminescent blue-green glow in trilobite eyes and exoskeletons did not cause problems for trilobites? Brigitte Schoenemann, Euan N.K. Clarkson, Gábor Hórváth The calcitic lenses in the eyes of Palaeozoic trilobites are unique in the animal kingdom, although the use of calcite would have conveyed great advantages for vision in aquatic systems. Calcite lenses are transparent, and due to their high refractive index they would facilitate the focusing of light. In some respects, however, calcite lenses bear evident disadvantages. Birefringence would cause double images at different depths, but this is not a problem for trilobites since the difference in the paths of the ordinary and extraordinary rays is less than the diameter of the receptor cells. Another point, not discussed hitherto, is that calcite fluoresces when illuminated with UV-A. Here we show experimentally that calcite lenses fluoresce, and we discuss why fluorescence does not diminish the optical quality of these lenses and the image formed by them. In the environments in which the trilobites lived, UV-A would not have been a relevant factor, and thus fluorescence would not have disturbed or confused their visual system.

With regard to human interest in fossils, trilobites may rank second only to dinosaurs. Having studied trilobites most of my life, the English version of The Back to the Past Museum Guide to TRILOBITES by Enrico Bonino and Carlo Kier is a pleasant treat. I am captivated by the abundant color images of more than 600 diverse species of trilobites, mostly from the authors’ own collections. He currently lives in Belgium where he works as a cartographer specialized in the use of satellite imaging and geographic information systems (GIS). His proficiency in the use of digital-image processing, a healthy dose of artistic talent, and a good knowledge of desktop publishing software have provided him with the skills he needed to create graphics, including dozens of posters and illustrations, for all of the displays at the Back to the Past Museum in Cancún. Discovery of some 400 million year-old sensory structures in the compound eyes SUBJECT AREAS: ZOOLOGY of trilobites CELLULAR IMAGING Brigitte Schoenemann1 & Euan N. K. Clarkson2 NEUROPHYSIOLOGY PALAEONTOLOGY 1Steinmann Insitute (Palaeontology) University of Bonn, Nussallee 8, D-53115 Bonn, Germany, 2Grant Institute, University of Edinburgh, The Kings Buildings, West Mains Road, EH3 9JW Edinburgh, UK. Received 11 December 2012 Fossilised arthropod compound eyes have frequently been described. Among the oldest known are those Accepted from the lower Cambrian of the Chengjiang Lagersta¨tte (China, c 525 Ma). All these compound eyes, 26 February 2013 though often excellently preserved, however, represent just the outer shells, because soft tissues, or even individual cells, usually do not fossilise. Using modern techniques, including mct-scanning and synchrotron Published radiation analysis we present the discovery of the sensory cell system of compound eyes, belonging to 14 March 2013 trilobites around 400 million years old, which allows their description and analysis. They are interpreted as forming part of an apposition-like ommatidium, which is a basic functional type of compound eye present in arthropods of today. Considered in greater detail, it is similar to the compound eye of the horseshoe crab Limulus, generally regarded as a ‘living fossil’, which probably retained this ancient basal system successfully Correspondence and until today. requests for materials should be addressed to B.S. xcellently preserved fossilised compound eyes have been reported recently, such as those of the Emu Bay, 1,2 3,4 (B.Schoenemann@uni- Australia or the Chengjiang Lagersta¨tte, China . All these systems, however, are fossilised only as their outer shells.

No. 9.] 591 123. Outline of the Cambrian System in the Yangtze Basin, II. The Aspect of the Cambrian Faunas of the Basin and the Rock- Faeies and the Thickness qf the Cambrian Formation in the Basin.' By Teiichi KOBAYASHI. (Comm. by T. KATO,M.LA., Nov. ,12, 1943.) The Aspect of the Cambrian Faunas :--In dealing . with trilobites which are more important than most other fossils I have tried to figure out the broad outline of the Cambrian fauna of the Yangtze province. At the outset, it should be noted that the term " Hwangho basin " is used hereafter for the Cambrian basin in Eastern Asia on the north side of the Tsinling-Keijo line. While nothing has been mentioned of the palaeogeographic bearing of Cambrian fossils in Central China except in the case of Lopnorites, Mansuy emphasized the intimate relationship of the North Chinese faunas with those which he described from Yunnan and Haut-Tonkin. His conclusion is correct insofar as the faunas in Kushan stage are concerned. In fact two-thirds of the species in the fauna are exactly identifiable with those of the Hwangho basin and the remainder be- long to the genera known from the Kushan stage in the basin except Annamitia spinif era which iss endemic to Yunnan and Tonkin. As to the other faunas however the relation is not so close as he considered, and in addition it must be noted that the f aunal alliance to those on the west side of the region can be recognized trough in a lessened degree. Furthermore there are several endemic genera and species, the localization being highest in the Yunnanocephalt s fauna which, re- markably enough, comprises no genus known so far outside of this region.

Welcome On behalf of the Associated North American Paleontological Societies, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Cincinnati for the 9th North American Paleontological Convention (NAPC 2009). As the abstracts in this volume attest, this is a wonderfully eclectic meeting, with sessions and presentations covering an array of taxa, and touching on important questions and themes that drive the science of paleontology in the 21st century. In the year when we commemorate the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth and the sesquicentennial of The Origin of Species, it is appropriate that NAPC 2009 take place in Cincinnati. There are few places on the continent that can match the rich paleontological heritage of this region.
