Theater of Enigma in Shakespeare’s England Michael West Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2017 Michael West All rights reserved ABSTRACT Theater of Enigma in Shakespeare’s England Michael West Theater of Enigma in Shakespeare’s England demonstrates the cognitive, affective, and social import of enigmatic theatrical moments. While the presence of other playgoers obviously shapes the experience of attending a play, I argue that deliberately induced moments of audience ignorance are occasions for audience members to be especially aware of their relations to others who may or may not share their bafflement. I explore the character of states of knowing and not-knowing among audience members and the relations that obtain among playgoers who inhabit these states. Further, I trace the range of performance techniques whereby playgoers are positioned in a cognitive no-man's land, lying somewhere between full understanding and utter ignorance—techniques that I collectively term “enigmatic theater.” I argue that moments of enigmatic theater were a dynamic agent in the formation of collectives in early modern playhouses. I use here the term “collective” to denote the temporary, occasional, and fleeting quality of these groupings, which occur during performance but are dissipated afterwards. Sometimes, this collective resembles what Victor Turner terms communitas, in which the normal societal divisions are suspended and the playgoers become a unified collectivity. At other times, however, plays solicit the formation of multiple collectives defined by their differing degrees of knowledge about a seeming enigma. -

Dear Customer, The ‘Shakespeare 400’ celebrations have been in full swing for a few months now, with performances and special events happening around the UK and beyond. Here at Europadisc, we have seen an uplift of interest in the DVD/Blu- ray versions of his plays recorded at the RSC and The Globe Theatre (issued by Opus Arte), and there have been a noticeable number of Shakespeare-themed recitals on CD featuring items such musical settings of the sonnets. Although our focus is primarily on classical music, we have agreed to feature a new CD set issued by Decca this month containing the complete plays, sonnets and poems of Shakespeare recorded by The Marlowe Dramatic Society back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, originally released on Argo Records. It is a beautifully presented boxset containing 100 CDs alongside a 200pp booklet crammed with fascinating notes and historical information. Much more information can be found on p.4 - highly recommended! Other boxsets featured this month include the Complete Remastered Stereo Collection of recordings from Jascha Heifetz on Sony (RCA), the Complete Decca Recordings of pianist Julius Katchen and some bargain re-issues of wonderful recordings from EMI, Virgin, Warner and Erato in Warner Classics’ Budget Boxset range. Of course, we mustn’t forget the many interesting new recordings being released: highlights include the next discs in both the Classical Piano Concerto (FX Mozart/Clementi) and the Romantic Violin Concerto (Stojowski/Wieniawski) series on Hyperion (p.5); four brand new titles from Dutton Epoch (see opposite); the already well-reviewed final instalment in Osmo Vänskä’s latest Sibelius cycle on BIS (Disc of the Month - see below); and a brilliant performance of works by Telemann from Florilegium (p.8). -

The reasons why this topic has been selected are the need to raise an awareness of the changing nature of the meaning of words and, through the knowledge of the semantic change in these words, to allow a better understanding of Shakespeare’s sonnets –thus providing evidence of the need of sound rigorous philological work in the edition of works from earlier periods. An introduction containing the theoretical framework about semantic change and about the relevant linguistic period (Early Modern English, EModE, henceforth) is followed by an account and discussion of main facts concerning Shakespeare’s life, works and language, with particular attention to the sonnets. The textual work consists of research into authoritative reference (etymological) works in order to outline the various semantic changes undergone by the above-mentioned words. These changes have been traced back as early in time as necessary, on the one hand, while, on the other, their semantic histories from Shakespeare’s time till Present-Day English have also been described. The TFG is closed by an analysis of the main tendencies detected and by the general conclusions. The Shakespeare Oxford O Newsletter Vol. 50, No. 4 Published by the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship Fall 2014 Whittemore Keynotes; McNeil and Altrocchi Honored at Madison SOF Conference by Howard Schumann " The first authorship conference sponsored by the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship was held at the Overture Center in Madison, Wisconsin, from September 11 to 14, 2014. The keynote address was presented by Hank Whittemore. The Oxfordian of the Year award was given to Alex McNeil, Shakespeare Oxford Newsletter editor and former president of the Shakespeare Fellowship. An Oxfordian Achievement Award was given to Paul Altrocchi, MD. McNeil’s award was presented by former SOF President John Hamill and President Tom Regnier. Hamill said that McNeil had helped make the 2013 unification of the Shakespeare Fellowship and the Shakespeare Oxford Society a “reality.” Regnier lauded him as the “conscience of the movement and one of its rocks.” Accepting the award, McNeil thanked Hamill and Regnier for their leadership in effecting the merger. He said that he is optimistic about the future even though “there is little consensus about all aspects.” His advice to attendees was “there should always be a shred of doubt. Don’t think you know everything.” Altrocchi’s award was presented by Hank Paul Altrocchi, MD Whittemore, who praised Altrocchi as a physician, artist, " and indomitable seeker of truth.
