Around and About

Central Area

Wheatley CAN TARA This busy TARA has done it again! Young people gathered at the shop and made pumpkin lanterns, and played games. They all went home happy with a bag of sweets for each child.

Hyde Park TARA

What a fantastic event this was – attended by in excess of 140 people of varying ages and cultures, and it certainly brought the community together in good spirits.

Keep Safe Event Doncaster Safeguarding Adults Board Keeping Safe – Everybody’s Business. A very popular and well attended full day event for both professionals and individuals from within the community “everyone has the right to be safe, respected and heard”. Everyone has a role to play to make it happen”. The event was attended by over 200 people.

Knit & Natter – Circuit House Ladies in Woodlands have been knitting, nattering, crafting and grafting for good causes for the best part of four years. Based at Circuit House, the group meets every week making items to donate and sell for charity. The meeting includes lunch, knitting and craft lessons for those who need them, and plenty of friendly conversion. Rosemary Lambert, chair of the Woodlands New Estate TARA and one of the founder members of the group, said: “We make everything from dementia muffs* and babies’ bootees to Christmas baubles and jewellery. Some of the items we donate to care homes and critical care units, others we sell. We use some of the money raised to buy more supplies and we donate the rest to charity. We also hold various fund-raising events.” The 20-strong group meets every Thursday at Circuit House between 10.30am and 3pm, with lunch provided for £1. It is a well-used community space with an award-winning garden Dian is considered to be the mainstay of the group, being the craft expert. She runs an additional beading class on a Tuesday. “When I retired I decided I needed to do different things and make new friends. I have always been good at making things – lace making, jewellery, knitting, and sewing - so this is the perfect place for me,” she said. *Dementia muffs, otherwise known as Twiddlemuffs are knitted woollen muffs with ribbons, buttons and fabric firmly attached. People with dementia often have restless hands. Twiddlemuffs provide a source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation while keeping hands warm

Craft Session – Skellow

For a second year running these have been very well attended and gone down a treat with the community. The first 2 sessions were held at the Hobcroft Centre on Repton road, Skellow. These sessions were supported by the Westfield Wellbeing group who cooked them all a fabulous meal.

Page 6

Walbank Rd Armthorpe - Book Exchange

The Wednesday Coffee Morning Group has been happy to exchange some of their books via Tom with other groups that come under Tom’s support. The group don’t have many tenants that read a paper /hardback book so they are happy to pass what books they have to other groups.

DN7 Community Food Bank

The DN7 food bank is open every Friday from 10.00am until 1.00pm at St Mary’s Church Community Hall Stainforth. It is for anyone living in the DN7 area that is struggling and needs a helping hand. Agency advisors are on hand each week to assist. St Leger Homes are supporting the project with Community Engagement

West Area

Windhill Hub Junior TARA

Busy, busy, busy, – the group were successful in their Anticipate Funding bid for their Halloween. To make the money go further we made our own spooky Piñatas. Many thanks to our newest volunteers Karen and Amy who did a fantastic job in finishing them off during half term. The young people had a lovely evening.

Denaby Newsletter

Issue 4 has been completed and is on the verge of being sent to the Printers.

Craganour Community TARA

For Halloween we were given the fright of the night by the members of Craganour TARA… As you can see in the picture some of the committee members and their families pushed the boat out to bring a fun and entertaining evening to the community of Denaby. Craganour never fail to surprise me—their passion for the community is immense. There is something happening most days— Art Classes on a Monday, Stitch In Time on Tuesday, Bingo on a Wednesday, Afternoon Tea on the first Thursday of each month. TARA meeting first Friday each month, Community Breakfast every Saturday……. If that’s not enough—they also run a school uniform swap shop where you can buy nearly new school uniforms for a small donation. They also run a walking club which will re-commence in the Spring of the year. Please take a look at their Facebook page for more details www.facebook.com/tarabungalow/ a call in to one of their sessions. 6-8 Craganour Pace, Denaby, DN12 4AS. If you would like to book the venue for an event of your own please contact John Allard on 07969 127128

The group also held their annual Macmillan fundraising day - which was once again well supported.

Page 8

Denaby Bumping Space

The group have been really busy preparing for Christmas— book folding, knitting, crochet, to name but just a few. There is always a buzz about the place—so do drop in if you are about or fancy a natter—Wednesday between 10am and 3pm. If crafting is not your thing, then what about dominoes, family history. The sessions are free to attend and open to all. Refreshments are available.

Conisbrough Craft Workshop

The ladies are busying themselves away in preparation for Christmas…. The team has a great ethos and cannot bear to see anything thrown away. I am sure their stall at Conisbrough Christmas market will be a success and it will help them to raise some more funds for additional craft items. There items are now being readily sold and I can honestly say they have a truly professional finish.

South

Bawtry Ladies Group

This group of ladies meet up every Tuesday morning for a coffee and a get together. The group is a new group using the facilities in the refurbished communal hall in Bawtry. Although relatively new, the group are exploring further activities to attract the wider community. Co-op funeral care is supporting the group and will be providing the materials for them to make table centres for Christmas – 13 December. The group held their MacMillan coffee morning

Cooking and Craft Group

Working with Rossington All Saints Academy every Thursday and the theme for this term is the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Heather and I are theming the cooking and craft sessions. The school is providing funding on a 6 week rota and we will have a new group every 6 weeks to work with. This term we will be working with a nurture group who are pupils who need to build their confidence. The new theme getting ready for Christmas is A Christmas Carroll.

Page 9 Strategic Involvement

Young Person’s Engagement Board Following the Young Person’s Engagement Strategy being completed and our commitments being approved by board I have been recruiting young people, aged 16-25 years to become part of the young person’s engagement board.

The first board meeting has taken place and although 7 young people were attending originally only 3 attended. However this small group have created the terms of reference and code of conduct for the meetings to be used from now on. The November and December meetings will be amalgamated to one meeting – 14 December 2016.

If there are any young persons aged 16-25 that want to attend can you please share these with me so we can try to encourage participation from across the borough?

In addition there is a meeting being held on the 8th November to complete a flow chart which goes in line with the ones that is used by TRIP to make sure we are all following the same guidelines. This will be available to be viewed by staff in the near future

Tenant and Resident Involvement Panel (TRIP) TRIP meetings will be moving back to the tenants and resident’s resource centre as the repairs to the roof have been completed.

They are still reviewing information to make a decision on their next review and Meryl has produced a flow chart to help them work through a review and this will be discussed at the next meeting in November.

Morgan Marshall and Steve Lyons will be attending the TPAS conference on 7th December and Maria Langham, Betty Clayton and Lesley Gilfedder are attending the 6th annual tenant panel conference in December. They will feedback to the group that information was gained.

Talkback Some people may remember this group. The group used to check our letters, publications and anything read by the general public was written in a way that was plain straight forward easy to understand English. We still have this group, but via email. We would like to start inviting tenants to be part of the group again, meeting together to go through the documents together. If this sounds like your cup of tea (and a biscuit too!!) please contact the Strategic Involvement Team on 01302 862743 or email [email protected]

Tenant & Resident Involvement Panel (TRIP)

TRIP’s primary role is scrutiny – to give tenants the power to hold St Leger Homes to account for its decisions, performance and conduct. This means that TRIP, as a representative team, needs to research issues and make recommendations for change based on the evidence that we find. Effective scrutiny will lead to improved performance, better value for money and increased tenant satisfaction. TRIP can decide the subject for the review, or St Leger Homes can request one. However, a group of at least ten tenants can also trigger a review, if they bring an issue that concerns them to the attention of TRIP. Would you like to become involved with TRIP? If you would like to know more please call Lesley Gilfedder (Chair) on 07787847292
