The species was described in 2002 by Dr Hellmut Toelken in the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens in a paper clarifying several species complexes in the State. Dr Toelken is well-advanced in a revision of Hibbertia in Australia and surrounding regions. Artist and botanist are staff members of the State Herbarium.
