FAST FACT The highest recorded temperature in the U.S. was 134° F (56.7° C) in Death Valley, Calif., on July 10, 1913. The highest recorded track temperature during an Indy car race was 137° F (58.3° C) on July 7, 2013 at Pocono Raceway. Graham Rahal raises his fist in celebration after taking the checkered flag at his home track of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, putting him within nine points of championship frontrunner Juan Pablo Montoya. John Cote/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: MONTOYA LOOKS TO TIGHTEN GRASP ON LEAD: With wins at St. Petersburg and the Indianapolis 500, Juan Pablo Montoya remains atop the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings. The Colombian, who has won four of his previous 10 500-mile races, leads Graham Rahal by nine points and Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Will Power are within striking distance. Can Montoya repeat at Pocono and strengthen his hold on the series championship lead? ANDRETTI SEEKS BREAKTHROUGH WIN AT HOME TRACK: Marco Andretti will compete in a virtual hometown race at Pocono. Andretti can lean on family ties for some advice as Pocono is one of two tracks where all three generations of racing’s most famous family have had success. Andretti’s grandfather, open- wheel great Mario Andretti, won the 1986 race, while his father Michael won pole for the race in 1986. Marco claimed the pole for the race in 2013. KARAM RACES AT HOME: Like the Andretti family, Sage Karam hails from nearby Nazareth, Pa., and will be racing in front of friends and family. -

The True Story of the Year the King, Jaws, Earnhardt, and the Rest
He Crashed Me So I Crashed Him Back: The True Story of the Year the King, Jaws, Earnhardt, and the Rest of NASCAR's Feudin', Fightin' Good Ol' Boys Put Stock Car Racing on the Map, Mark Bechtel, Little, Brown, 2011, 0316034037, 9780316034036, 320 pages. On a cold February day in 1979, when most of the Northeast was snowed in by a blizzard, NASCAR entered the American consciousness with a dramatic telecast of the Daytona 500. It was the first 500-mile race to be broadcast live on national television and featured the heroes and legends of the sport racing on a hallowed track. With one of the wildest finishes in sports history--a finish that was just the start of the drama--everything changed for what is now America's second most popular sport. HE CRASHED ME SO I CRASHED HIM BACK is the story of an emerging sport trying to find its feet. It's the story of how Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, A.J. Foyt, and Kyle Petty came together in an unforgettable season that featured the first nationally televised NASCAR races. There were rivalries--even the sibling kind--and plenty of fistfights, feuds, and frenzied finishes. Rollicking and full of larger-than-life characters, HE CRASHED ME SO I CRASHED HIM BACK is the remarkable tale of the birth of modern stock-car racing.. DOWNLOAD HERE The Earnhardt Collection The Most Comprehensive Archive Ever Assembled, , Feb 28, 2006, , 256 pages. The only book to chronicle Dale Earnhardt's complete twenty-two-year winning history ranges from his first win at Bristol in 1979 through his final checkered flag at Talladega ... -

Sports Publishing LLC, United States, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. Tim Richmond was, fellow NASCAR driver Kyle Petty said, a stranger in time. In one regard, the flashy, flamboyant driver from Ashland, Ohio, was years ahead of the trends in a sport that would soon enjoy explosive growth in popularity. Women who were NASCAR fans loved him-and so did their husbands and boyfriends. Richmond believed he could use his stardom in racing as a springboard to a second career as an actor, and he had the Hollywood good looks to make that a realistic dream. At the same time, Richmond was also a throwback.
