THE MUSIC INDUSTRY’S IDEA-SHARING EVENT OF THE YEAR

T hey say, “Time fies when you’re having fun.” Then you’re sure to have fun conducting business these next 2 days at the 6th Annual Summer Sessions in Atlantic City.

They say, “Change is Good!” This year we’ve changed up a few things, most notably moving our daytime panels to Revel and the Promo Only Promotions Lunch to the The Social at Revel. The Monday night Cocktail Party moves to Dusk at Caesar’s with an impressive line-up of some of the biggest DJs in the world!

They say, “The more things change the more they stay the same.” The House of Blues Artist Showcase remains at the Showboat on Tuesday night and, as always, promises to be one of the pivotal moments with major surprises. We expect at least one or more of the artists will “break” from this year’s Summer Sessions.

They say, “Bigger is Better.” This year’s Summer Sessions will be the biggest one yet. You will meet, greet, and learn from the best Label Executives and Radio Executives, as well as the best Mix Show DJ’s and the best Artists. No other gathering brings together so many of the biggest decision makers in one place.

They say, “There’s never enough time.” Over the next two days, you will network, make new friends, strengthen relationships and gain a better understanding of how we all communicate with each other.

They say, “You don’t know someone until you walk a mile in their shoes.” At this year’s Summer Sessions we want you to have fun, but more importantly get work done. We want you to leave with an increased passion for not only what you do, but for what we all do.

They say, “Travel Safely.” As you get ready to travel home and return to your daily lives we want you to leave saying “Summer Sessions was great, and I can’t wait until next year!” It will be here before you know it!

I say, “We worked hard so you don’t have to.” Enjoy The 2013

DJ CASSIDY: Hello, Sir. CARY VANCE: How are you doing today? DJ CASSIDY: Good! Good to see you, again.

CARY VANCE: Yeah, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you.

DJ CASSIDY: It’s been a minute, but it’s an even more exciting time now. CARY VANCE: Tell me a little bit about what is happening for DJ CASSIDY these days.

DJ CASSIDY: I am releasing my debut album on Columbia Records, and the frst single is about to be heard by the world! The album encapsulates years of inspiration and infuence. I have been a DJ since age 10, and have always made it my goal to be able to play all kinds of music for people all over the world. Throughout that process, I studied the peak of every party, and what makes people move and dance; it has always been my goal to create that. With my new song and album I really sought to bring back the greatest and most universal of all time, and I think that I have achieved that.

DJ CASSIDY: You mentioned that you started DJing at 10 years old. Take us back to how DJ CASSIDY started DJing in the frst place?

DJ CASSIDY: I was a Hip-Hop kid. I looked up to , , Kool Herc and all the greats. I wanted to do everything that was Hip-Hop. And when I was 9 years old, I asked my parents to buy me two turntables and a mixer for my 10th birthday.

CARY VANCE: Do you remember what your frst mixer and turntables were?

DJ CASSIDY: The two turntables that they bought me were Technics 1200’s and they are still in my bed- room today. With all of the technology that has occurred throughout the years the turntable hasn’t really changed, technology somehow changed around the Technics 1200, which is a fascinating thing. I still remember what my frst 3 records were.

CARY VANCE: What were they?

DJ CASSIDY: House of Pains’ “”, Nice & Smooth’s ”Hip-Hop Junkies” and Kris Kross’ “Jump”.

CARY VANCE: Those are some great records!

DJ CASSIDY: They were great records. I kept the frst 3 vinyls, and each are signed by the Artists that I met over the years. They are very special to me.

CARY VANCE: You mentioned that your roots were in Hip-Hop. Sean “Diddy” Combs was one of the earliest people to fnd, and take notice of you, how did you come to meet him?

DJ CASSIDY: I was DJing at a club in New York, at the time when I was in my late teens, and just getting hot on the scene. It was an of-night, and kind of empty at 3:00 am, Pufy and Kim Porter came out of the corner of the room and started dancing. I was playing a lot of soul music from the 70’s and 80’s, so we are talking: , Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Marvin Gaye, Chic, , Barry White, , , and . Pufy started dancing and didn’t stop until 5:30AM. On the way out of the club, he walked by the DJ booth, and asked who the DJ was. I told him that it was me, and he said “No, who has been playing this old music all night?” I told him, again, that it was me! He looked me up and down, (I was 18 years old but I looked like I was 11), wrote his number down on a napkin, and told me to call him the next day. I called and left him a message. He called me back himself, and told me that he was doing a party for the VMAs, and for his new album and he wanted me to do them. Me, being the crazy kid I was, said, “No, I already have another gig for the Awards.” He replied, “You have an hour to fgure it out, God bless!” and hung up the phone. I got out of my other event, and the next thing you know I was the Party Rocker for the No. 1 Party Guy on Earth! The night that I met him, and was able to play for him is such a memorable night that really changed the course of my career. CARY VANCE: It’s great that you mentioned all of those true Classics that you were playing! Where does your love and passion for music come from? DJ CASSIDY: Like I started to say before, Hip-Hop really led me to everything else. I really look up to the founders of Hip-Hop and I saw that they weren’t known for playing Hip-Hop records in their heyday because there were no Hip-Hop records. They were creating the culture by playing , Funk, R&B, Soul, Rock & Roll, Reggae and even early . They were creating something new with all of the genres of music that could afect the dance foor. It was in the admiration of them that I realized that in order to be like my heroes, I had to play like my heroes. I wanted to learn the kinds of music they played, and all of the music that infuenced Hip-Hop. It was Hip- Hop that led me to other forms of music and it was really the soul music of the 70’s and 80’s that had a profound afect on my career.

I have always been the kind of DJ that could play all Hip-Hop music here in New York and go to Saint Tropez and play all House music. I have always been the guy that all diferent kinds of people could call for all diferent kinds of events and parties. My goal is to always Rock The Party! It was this era of music that led a lot of people to me including Pufy, and a lot of other notable people. It was that music and my innate passion for playing it in the way that I played it that really inspired me and became a large part of my career and in essence inspired the album that I have made.

CARY VANCE: A large part of your career is as a DJ. I DJed in for 25 years and thought I had a good clientele list but yours is incredible! It spans from the likes of , Beyoncé, Jay-Z, LeBron James and the Louis Vuitton company. What is it like to be in charge as the music maestro at these events for these people? DJ CASSIDY: It is an amazing feeling to perform for people that you look up to. When people ask me if this is all a dream come true my answer is, “No, my only real dream is for my heroes to know my name.”

DJ CASSIDY: I never dreamed this big. I became a DJ at age 10 because I loved it, it was my hobby, my fun and after-school activity. I never thought about the job, or the money aspect. I have always done it because I love it. To be able to play and perform for people that I looked up to as a child, particularly eve- ryone in music that you named, has been a blessing. It never gets old and every time I am able to perform for someone who’s music that I listened to as a kid, it is as great as the frst time, every time.

CARY VANCE: One of the people that you ended up DJing for, that I assume is the highest honor in the world, was for President . What was it like to DJ for the President of the of America?

DJ CASSIDY: DJing for the President was the most incredible feeling that I have ever felt in my entire life. The frst time I DJed for him was at his frst Inauguration. I was the frst DJ to ever play at an Inauguration. I played live at 1 of the 10 Balls, and programed all the music for the other 9 Inauguration Balls.

Over the past 4½ years I have been able to perform at many events for the President, and play at the White House. Having the opportunity to perform for the President on the day of his frst and second Inau- guration and to play at the White House is and was such an indescribable feeling!

I would have never in my wildest imagination thought that I would have the opportunity to DJ for a Presi- dent, and such an infuential, historical President at that. It is a surreal feeling to be at an Inauguration, or in the White House performing and playing music for people to dance to. All of those events are really about the celebration, and I have always considered it my job to bring the celebration. That is what I have done for the President and it gets more fulflling each time.

CARY VANCE: A question that I have, and I am sure a lot of other people have is, did President Obama make any music requests?

DJ CASSIDY: I can’t speak on specifcs but I am sure that you have watched him throughout the cam- paigns and heard the music that was played. I am defnitely rocking some Stevie Wonder, and you can get the gist of it from some of that. At the end of the day, I am there to bring the celebration which is not only how I look at it when I perform for him but how I look at it every time that I perform.

CARY VANCE: That’s a great way to look at it. You’ve made the transition from DJ to Music Producer and Recording Artist. How did you go from being the person behind the tables playing music, to the person behind the control board creating the music; what was the transition like?

DJ CASSIDY: For years I have unintentionally studied the dance foor; I watch people for a living and study their reactions. I wanted to create those moments not only with the music of others, but with music that I create myself.

With this album I have united all of the infuences and inspirations throughout the years of what I have perceived to be the greatest, most universal dance music of all time. I have sought to re-inspire that energy and to recreate that sound to bring it back to the dance foor. C

K CARY VANCE: When will people be able to hear the album? DJ CASSIDY: Very soon! CARY VANCE: Have you played anything from the album at any of your parties, yet? DJ CASSIDY: I have secretly tested my weapon. CARY VANCE: I am sure that it has gotten a stamp of approval. DJ CASSIDY: Thank you so much! That means a lot coming from you. Let me ask you a question and let’s change rolls. You started DJing in 1978, what were your three hottest records?

CARY VANCE: Michael Zagers' "Let's All Chant," "Devil's Gun" by C.J & Co. and probably Chics' “Good Times”. DJ CASSIDY: You know your records!

CARY VANCE: When I hear what Daft Punk is doing today and listen to what they have created and listen to the record where it samples Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” I love what is occurring out there today. The stuf that I played when I was a teenager and just getting into DJing is back today. It’s great to see today’s youth hearing these for the frst time, and see the reaction it generates. The music back then was great. A lot of the records that were produced back in the late 70’s weren’t drum machines, they were live musicians and over the past couple of years we have moved into an electronic computer generated world. It is great to see real musicians again, which is why it sounds so great.

DJ CASSIDY: Yes, humans making humans dance! CARY VANCE: What can we expect from the album? JENNA DREY “SUMMER NIGHT IN SEATTLE”

As already playing on: C89.5 FM, KNHC 107.9 FM WNRG DMX Radio 92.7 FM, WCPT Dance Factory Fusion Radio Chicago Electric FM and more… www.JennaDrey.com Produced by Lenny B.

“Jenna Drey’s gift for pop/dance songwriting makes this one of her best singles yet -- an irresistible, hands-in-the-air Summer anthem.” ( Joey Guerra - Pop Music Critic / Houston Chronicle) DJ CASSIDY: There are many more amazing Artists on the album, and all the Artists create the sound and the energy with the most legendary list of astounding Drummers, Horn, Guitar and Bass Players that you have ever heard!

CARY VANCE: Congratulations on becoming the opening Artist and DJ for the Legends of the Summer Stadium Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake Tour! That has got to be an amazing feeling to be able to have that role for 2 fabulous Artists! What can we expect from you while you’re on tour with them?

DJ CASSIDY: I have listened to their music for so long and rocked thousands of people with their music so it is an honor to be a part of the tour and to set the stadiums on fre before they come on. I am going to do what I do and bring people on a journey of music. All music for all people. I am going to rock the 50,000 people every night, and you just might hear my new single as well.

CARY VANCE: A lot of DJs today struggle to fnd the right songs to play to move their crowd. What are three must-play songs to get your crowd moving?

DJ CASSIDY: I’ll give you one, the greatest party record of all time “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough,” and I’ll leave it at that.

CARY VANCE: Given the plethora of people and the crowds that you have played for, what is the strang- est request that you have ever gotten?

DJ CASSIDY: To be honest with you there have been so many strange requests! I honestly feel that the strangest ones come from people that ask you to play something that you are already playing! You encounter a lot of weird people in the nightlife world and once the liquor hits you get the weird behavior.

Regarding song requests I have experienced them all but the stranger the request the more important it is for me. When someone requests a hot song at the moment it's an obvious one and when people request a timeless song it’s not too surprising either but it is the strange, weird and drunk ones that are looking for that one song that you might not have done.

CARY VANCE: When you started DJing in 1991, you were playing vinyl, and you said you had Technics 1200’s.

DJ CASSIDY: Yes, I think that I played vinyl until 2006. I was scared of Serato at frst because I didn’t want to be in front of a lot of people and have my computer crash.

CARY VANCE: Have you found that Serato has changed the way that people DJ?

DJ CASSIDY: I think that it helped me. I am able to bring more music now. I used to carry 9 crates of records and take a cab to my gigs. Six crates would be in the trunk, one in the front and two on my lap. You fgure there are about 100 records in each crate so that was 900 records and most are singles, some are . In the 900 records there are maybe 1,000 songs that you can play.

With iTunes, you can have 20,000 songs so your repertoire is bigger. Over the years, my music knowledge has increased and the amount of music I now carry has expanded times 10 at least!

DJ CASSIDY: For me, it is about the arsenal. You need the weapons to make the killing and the more weapons you have the more killings you can make, and in that sense, I love the technology. I do miss the search for music, and the exclusivity of music. There is no search, or exclusivity anymore because any song that you know of you can fnd in 30 seconds. I miss it but with everything you gain in life there is something you lose. CARY VANCE: Earlier you mentioned Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc, is there a DJ today that you love to hear? DJ CASSIDY: To be honest with you, my answer to that is the same as the requests question. I honestly learn something from every DJ. I try to go out as much as possible to clubs, shows, festivals, and any- where that I can hear people do their thing. I honestly learn from everyone and every night that I have been out since my teens there has been something that has inspired something that I’ve done. I try as much as possible to listen to people who play diferent things and who have a style. Anyone who has a style is able to inspire your own. CARY VANCE: I appreciate the time that you have given me today, what can we expect from DJ CASSIDY, and look forward to? DJ CASSIDY: You should look forward to my album, and the 10 songs on it! CARY VANCE: We are all waiting to hear it! Thank you for your time. I wish you incredible success!
