A lot has happened since I last wrote a set of programme notes back in March and the fact we are lining up to play hockey at all at the start of this season is thanks to an incredible collaborative effort up and down country - firstly England Hockey to get the green light to move to Step 4 and then the clubs to buy into the processes and get the season underway. To date there have been 135,000 Participation Agreements signed, this was ‘called out’ at the re-convened England Hockey AGM last Tuesday and needs repeating here. Also the big news items from the AGM is to vote in ‘A Structure Fit for the Future’ this is covered in more detail on Page 6 but is the biggest rationalisation and simplification exercise, the sport has undertaken in this country. This season sees a change in league format in the Premier Leagues with every team playing each other once before Christmas. The leagues will then split in two with the top 6 teams playing each other once more to decide the Champions. The bottom 5 teams will play each other twice more to decide ranking from 7 to 11. This change has been introduced primarily to accommodate a heavily congested international calendar and to maximise the opportunities for the players impacted to still play domestic league hockey. So lots of change ahead and with change you get opportunity. Enjoy your hockey this weekend. Kindest regards Brian Field Chairman – Men’s Hockey, Holcombe Hockey Club 14 3 Pre-Season Holcombe Movers and Shakers By Lucas Ball Our men's first XI, having narrowly missed out on Finals Weekend last season, have strengthened with the arrivals of Ollie Payne, Sam Hooper and Robert Crowe. All those standing down will be Sunday 13/12/2020 League Surbiton Surbiton HC 14:00 missed for their significant contributions at board level for England Hockey and in Ian’s case the huge contribution he has made since the establishment of England Hockey returning the governing body to a sound financial footing. The approval of the Structure Fit for the Future proposals now means that work can start in earnest on delivering the most significant rationalisation and simplification of governance structures that hockey in England has seen. The aim is for a structure that is easier to understand, more consistent and accountable and ultimately easier for clubs and participants to work with. It will take time to deliver the changes and the proposals will continue to need to evolve and develop. The next steps will focus on establishing the new ‘shadow’ structures in each Area and progressing the priority work areas such as adult leagues. If you are interested in helping be part of delivering the changes then please take a few moments to let England Hockey know by filling in the short expression of interest. Mike Stoddard, President of England Hockey and chair of the AGM said "It was excellent to have so many members join us to discuss such an important issue as well as a such a strong Ladies 1XI - League Fixtures turnout of votes from members. The strong mandate from the membership to deliver the Saturday 19/09/2020 League Loughborough Students Holcombe Park Pitch 1 16:00 Structure Fit for the Future proposals is a message on the appetite for change.
