(S. PANIKKASSERY) DIRECTOR Place: CHENNAI Date: 25-06-2016 1 Puducherry District Map 2 Brief Industrial Profile UT of Puducherry (includes Puducherry, Karaikkal, Mahe & Yanam) 1. General Characteristics of UT of Puducherry: The Union Territory of Puducherry comprises the former French establishments of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, which lie scattered in South India. Puducherry, the capital of the Territory was once the original headquarters of the French in India, is situated on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal and is about 135 kms. from Chennai. It is bounded on the east by the Bay of Bengal and on the three sides by Tamil Nadu. About 130 kms.south of Puducherry on the East Coast lies Karaikal. Mahe is situated on the Malabar coast on the Western Ghats surrounded by Kerala and is about 70 kms. from Calicut. Yanam is situated adjoining the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh and is about 200 kms. from Visakhapatnam. The main languages spoken here are Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, English and French. All the regions of Puducherry were under the French rule for 138 years. On November 1, 1954, the French possessions in India were de facto transferred to the Indian Union and became a Union Territory. But only in 1963, Puducherry became officially an integral part of India.Pondicherry is a peaceful city. It is referred by names such as 'Quintessence of French Culture', 'India's Little France' and 'The French Riviera of the East'. Still it has the French flavor in it as one can see by the grand colonial mansions, beautiful boulevards, and placid promenades, spellings on sign boards and buildings, names of roads and public places. 1.1. Location & Geographical Area: The Union Territory with legislature extends over an area of 490 Sq. Kms (includes Puducherry, Karaikkal, Mahe&Yanam). It lies between: 16° 44’00’ N 82°15’00’E. Yanam is surrounded by East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. 3 Mahe: Total area: 8.69 Sq. Kms, It lies between: 11° 42’ N 75°32’E. The total area of Mahe is surrounded by North Malabar of Kerala state. 1.2. Topography: Puducherry: The region is a flat country of average elevation of about 15 metres above sea – level, intersected by the deltaic channels of River Gingee and the Ponnaiyar and other streams forming the main drainage basins, interspersed with lagoons, lakes and tanks. The Puducherry area is said to mark the northern limit of the sediments laid down during the great Cenomanian marine transgression along the east coast of South India. The coastal border has a length of 22Km, with a breadth ranging from four to six hundred metres. Superficially, the coast is flat and sandy. Karaikkal: Forming part of the fertile Cauvery delta, the region is completely covered by the distributaries of Cauvery. Covered completely by a thick mantle of alluvium of variable thickness, the lie of region is flat having a gentle slope towards the Bay of Bengal in the east. It is limited on the north by the Nandalar and on the South – east by the Vettar. Yanam: The region is bounded on the East and South by River Godavari which discharges itself into the Bay of Bengal after flowing about 14 Km. towards South – east. The town of Yanam is located at a spot where the River Coringa and the Godavari separate to divide the region in two parts, one on the east and the other on the west. The entire region is composed of a flat, monotonous terrain without any distinct topographical feature. Mahe: Mahe is a small area bounded on the South – west by Arabian Sea, on the North by the River Ponniyam (Moolakadavu) and on the other sides by a stretch of Calcareous hills of medium height which are linked to the ghats by a series of wooded hillocks. The River Mahe which flows towards the west divides the region into two parts. 1.3. Availability of Minerals: UT of doesn’t have any major mineral resources. Around 2.6 mi. tons of Cement grade limestone has been proven in Puducherry region. Ignite deposits have been recorded near Bahour, Aranganur and Kanniakoil. 250 MT of graphite has been estimated in Puducherry region. Rare minerals resources like Ilmenite found to occur in the form of alluvial deposits int eh coastal area of Karaikal. 1.4. Forest: There is no appreciable forest cover in the UT of Puducherry. 4 1.5. Administrative Set Up: Puducherry is a Union Territory of India rather than a state, which implies that governance and administration falls directly under federal authority. However, along with Delhi, Puducherry is one of two union territories in India that is entitled by special constitutional amendments to have an elected legislative assembly and a cabinet of ministers, thereby conveying partial statehood. The Centre is represented by the lieutenant governor. The central government is more directly involved in the territory's financial well-being unlike states, which have a central grant that they administer. Consequently, Puducherry has at various times, enjoyed lower taxes, especially in the indirect category.
