June 5, 2018 For Immediate Release Neil & Liam Finn Announce First Album Together, Lightsleeper, Out August 24th via Inertia Music and [PIAS], New Single “Back To Life” Listen to “Back To Life” Here Photo Credit: Russ Flatt Neil Finn and Liam Finn have today announced their first album together, Lightsleeper, out August 24th via Inertia and [PIAS]. The album announcement arrives with lead single 'Back To Life', where powerful melodies join vulnerable lyrics, evoking the magic that happens when people gather to sing and remember absent friends - love's triumphant ability to transcend our physical world. As it's a family affair, it's entirely fitting that the story of Lightsleeper begins at a wedding and here the album opens with a gift from father to son on his wedding day, "Together, Together", the chorus of 'Island of Peace’ begins. Recorded mainly in Neil's Auckland studio, Lightsleeper bursts with melody and the trademark, euphoric flips that the Finn family are known for. When Liam's lo-fi atmospherics meet Neil's iconic pop sensibility, it's met with a feeling of intimacy and awe that makes it easy to wonder why the dynamic father and son duo haven't written together, earlier. The simple Finn family ethos of making music with friends and family continues right through to the personnel recruited for the album; the touring band, Sharon Finn - Neil's wife, and Liam's mother - plays bass on two of the songs, Elroy Finn - Liam's brother - drums on seven; and good friend Connan Mockasin returns for four. Greek friends Elias Dendias and Spiros Anemogianis bring plaintive bouzouki and accordion to 'Back To Life', and legendary Mick Fleetwood turns up to play on 'Anger Plays A Part', 'Any Other Way' and 'We Know What It Means'. The unmistakeable spirit - of musicians at their peak, bound together by a still-hot desire to make music that isn't simply that year's work, but something brewed up with bones, love, quiet revelation and the perfectly- evoked euphoria of being alive - is what makes Lightsleeper such a gorgeous progression in the Finn family musical history. Essential criteria for maximising the play list potential of New Zealand music on commercial radio: A Programme Directors' perspective A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at Massey University Palmerston North, New Zealand Karen Neill 2000 'Station and programme directors act as gatekeepers, being responsible for ensuring a prescribed and identifiable sound or format, based on what the management of the station believes will generate the largest audience - and ratings - and consequent advertising revenue. The ... prograrnme director ... will regularly sift through new releases, selecting three or four to add to the playlist. The criteria underpinning this process will normally be a combination of the reputation of the artist; a record's previous performance, if already released overseas; whether the song fits the station's format; and, at times, the gut intuition of those making the decision. In the case of the first of these factors, reputation and previous track record, publicity material from the label/artist/distributor plays an important role, jogging memories or sparking interest in a previously unknown artist' (Shuker, 1998, p. 242). Connan Mockasin Start time: 8pm Running time: 105 minutes – including interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change Martin Aston talks to Connan about creating new worlds through his conceptual music. ‘I like creating something relaxing to watch and to listen to,’ says Connan Mockasin. ‘Something atmospheric. Another world to pop into for a while.’ By atmospheric, perhaps the New Zealander means a beguiling sense of playfulness, mystery and absurdity, as his Barbican debut illustrates. The show comes in three parts: the opening instalment of a five-part film ‘melodrama’ (his description) Bostyn & Dobsyn, revolving around an ambiguous relationship between a music teacher and his pupil, followed by a live set by Jassbusters – also the title of Mockasin’s new album – comprising, ‘a band of music teachers’ - in truth, Mockasin and his band, bassist Nick Harsant, drummer Matthew Eccles and rhythm guitarist Rory McCarthy. Lastly, said ‘teachers’ shed their disguise to play, ‘all the hits!’ he promises, namely selections from preceding albums Forever Dolphin Love and Caramel. How to illuminate this maverick world of Mockasin? The man born Connan Hosford in Te Awanga on the east coast of New Zealand’s north island, and currently living in Tokyo – isn’t much help. ‘It’s just ideas in my head that I put together and , later, might make more sense,’ he vouches. ‘But I don’t think about the meaning at the time.’ To give an idea of Mockasin’s creative process, Caramel was written in the wake of imagining an album called Caramel. But it’s also a semi-concept album.
