From the Pastoral Associate’s Desk At our book club discussion last month, we discussed the book Mercy in the City by Kerry Weber. This easy-to-read, short volume follows one woman’s attempt to practice the Works of Mercy in New York City during the season of Lent. The author’s stories brought a lot for us to discuss and think about. One suggestion that emerged from our group was the possibility of bringing back a clothing drive to benefit St. Francis House in Boston. After book club, I called St. Francis House to find out the details on hosting a drive. I was graciously invited to visit the facility. If you ran into me in the days following my visit you were likely a recipient of the stories of all that I witnessed during my visit. It is truly amazing that many of the city’s most vulnerable people have a place to come to each day that is staffed with caring individuals. The amount of services provided under one roof from medical care to nutritious meals, clothing to vocational training, is remarkable. I encourage you to look at their website—www.stfrancishouse.org. They also have a host of volunteer opportunities. I would be happy to talk with anyone who is interested! Our clothing drive begins this Lent. On Page 6 of the bulletin is a detailed list of their current needs and information on how to donate. And, if you are looking for a good book suggestion, check out Mercy in the City.
