The Ceramicoat Solution

The Ceramicoat Team have been involved in the manufacture and installation of Tunnel Coating Products for over 60 years and are able to provide a simple, easy to apply solution to Tunnel Finishes with the proven performance of the Ceramicoat Tunnel Coating Systems which provide the following benefits:

• Durable, easy to clean, lasting finish to tunnel surfaces

• Protection from carbonation and chemical attack from pollutants found in

• Increased light reflectance providing economic and effective use of lighting

• High reflectance of diffused light appropriate for road tunnel users (Ceramicoat Tunnel Coating – 78%)

• Aesthetic finish in a variety of colours which will maintain a decorative, protective treatment for in excess of 20 years

• Protects from De-icing salts, salt sprays, motor exhaust fumes, petrol, oils, rubber tyre dust (if left in place can be a potential flash fire risk), sulphurous deposits, alkaline detergents etc. Kirkenwald Tunnel - Switzerand • Proven in use for 60 years

Cleanability Whatever the substrate, cleaning is a key issue for the effective, economic and safe use throughout the lifetime of the Tunnel. Ceramicoat Tunnel Coatings unique formulation which does not contain any potentially harmful particles, penetrates the substrate and provides an impervious surface that prevents the long-term adhesion of contaminates and dirt and enables easy cleaning with water. Concrete, passive fire protective spray and board systems all benefit from the application of Ceramicoat as a final durable easy to clean surface.

Application Application can be by airless spray or roller, using a 2 or 3 coat system, dependant on the length and vehicle density of the tunnel or the substrate condition. Full guidance and the application of a site sample can be provided. M30 Tunnel - Madrid, Spain Ceramicoat both manufacture and install the Ceramicoat System using our own labour or our Approved Agents/ Applicators who are trained and certified by ourselves. We currently have Agents/Applicators in Austria, India, Italy, Madeira, Spain, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, North and South America Installation is normally preceded by a High Pressure Wash which is followed by application to the soffits (normally a dark colour) followed by the application to the walls (normally a light colour). After the above has been carried out any required colour patterns or visual effects can be then be installed.

A Design Specification and Outline Method Statement along with a complete Quality Package can also be provided to ISO 9001:2015 for the site operations.

Colours Colours are available to British Standards and RAL ranges. Specific colours can be matched where necessary. Optimum reflectance (78%) can be achieved by the application of Magnolia to the walls with Black or Grey soffits.

Environment The environment and lighting in many road tunnels, particularly large tunnels, could be dramatically improved with the use of light coloured coatings.

Colour can also play a major role in road safety. The introduction of light reflective strips and alternate light colours on the tunnel walls helps to relieve boredom and maintain concentration. Acceptable Light Reflection Colour and Reflectivity in Tunnels Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating System

Although construction methods and tunnelling techniques together with construction safety have advanced to modern standards, with basic safety measures introduced by the tunnel operators and owners, little or no regard had been paid to the tunnel environment for the actual users.

In the UK the CD 352 Design of Road Tunnels has been introduced as an update to BD78/99 Design of Road Tunnels. Ceramicoat fully complies with both documents. BD78/99 included examples and referred to colour and surface reflectance (see Chapter 6 and Fig. 6.2).the Ceram- icoat Tunnel Coating fully complied with the requirements of this document. Unacceptable Light Reflection (VE Panel) In normal driving conditions the driver has, within their field of vision, such things as varying landscapes, buildings and people. In a long tunnel the visual stimuli for the driver is replaced by the monotonous landscape of walls and upstands. It would therefore be beneficial to tunnel safety to provide alternative surroundings for drivers entering into such monotonous conditions.

Environment and lighting in many road tunnels, particularly larger tunnels could be dramatically improved with the use of coloured coatings rather than leaving bare concrete which has little or no light reflectance and is difficult to keep clean.

Colour can play a major role in tunnel safety particularly in long tunnels. Ceramicoat Black to Crown - Grey to Walls and Black/White Chevrons Long, badly lit, dull, sombre, and boring tunnels which can sometimes have a soporific effect on drivers causing a loss of concentration.

Pollutants

Ceramicoat provides a protective layer to the concrete and prevents the concrete experiencing carbonation throughout the performance life of the coating.

Tests carried out show that the Ceramicoat provides the additional protection from carbonation required where rebars have been installed with insufficient concrete cover to the surface. Air pollutants in tunnels are continually under review and an element to consider is the effect of contamination on the substrate and the possible effect of contaminates remaining on the surface after washing.

Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating protects the substrate from ingress of contaminates and enhances their removal during washing cycles.

Visuals

Once the Ceramicoat Tunnel Coating is installed there will be a requirement to highlight the locations of Emergency Exits, Pedestrian and Vehicle Cross Passages, Telephone Points and Fire Fighting Equipment.

Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating can be used in a range of colours to provide the Visual effect and necessary wall signage for this situation.

The opposite illustrations are purely examples – colours and signage can be carried out to client specification.

Ceramicoat Tunnel Coating - Fire Protected Tunnels Ceramicoat to Promat Board System Promat boards can be installed either directly to the concrete surface or mounted on a sub-frame The PROMATECT® Panel can be over coated with Ceramicoat Type ‘C’ Tunnel Coating either on site or pre-coated at our works. ROMATECT® has been comprehensively fire tested to current industry requirements.

The Clyde Tunnel in Scotland was Fire Protected using PROMATECT® Panel coated with Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating to the soffit, PROMATECT® and Polyvision to the Upper Walls and Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating to the Lower Walls.

Holloway Underpass in Birmingham where PROMATECT® Board coated with Ceramicoat Type ‘C’ Tunnel Coating on a floating stainless steel frame was used to fire protect the soffit carried out during short nightshifts minimising disruption to traffic and low temperature conditions. The Cross Passage Lobbies on the A3 Hindhead Tunnel had Fire Rated Ceilings coated with Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating. Ceramicoat Type ‘C’ Tunnel Coating has also been applied to Boards off-site for subsequent site installation on the Dartford Tunnel, Strand Underpass, Tyne Tunnel, Conwy Tunnel and on-site on the Limerick Tunnel and the Gibraltar Tunnel.

The Port of Miami Tunnel in the USA for Bouygues Florida has 60,000 m2 of PROMATECT® coated with Ceramicoat Type ‘C’ Tunnel Coating in Dark Grey for the soffits, fans, steelwork and Light Blue to the walls behind the panels. The same system was used on the Midtown Tunnel in Norfolk Virginia USA and as well as on the Hugh L Carey (Battery) and Queens Midtown Tunnel Refurbishments in New York USA in “NYC Blue Colour”

Ceramicoat to Fire Protective Spray Systems These Systems are based on formulations to achieve maximum high temperature resistance for long time periods whilst reducing heat flow into the concrete lining to a minimum. Once installed the Systems can be over-coated with Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating to establish an easy to clean, durable, light reflective surface to the Fire Protection. The surface of the Fire Protection should be left with a smooth finish to wall areas particularly within the wash zones. The following projects used Promat Internationals Fire Protection Spray which is a high temperature-resistant insulation that is applied to the concrete tunnel lining by spray system and was then over-coated with Ceramicoat Type C Tunnel Coating: London, Coentunnel and Hubertus Tunnel Holland.

Fast and easy to install • Hubertus Tunnel Holland • High adhesion strength • Where required ( i.e. in Road Tunnels) the surface finish is trowelled back to provide a “smooth” surface which is then over coated with Ceramicoat Type ‘C’ Tunnel Coating • Comprehensively fire tested to current industry requirements.

Blackwall Tunnel London Cleaning Panel and Spray Systems once coated with Ceramicoat Tunnel Coating is easily cleaned with water (and if required for stubborn stains, a mild detergent). We utilise 150 Bar pressure at 1000mm - normal washing equipment operates at 70/100 Bar at 1000mm - both are suitable for Ceramicoat treated boards and spray. PROMATECT® board when coated with Ceramicoat Type ‘C’ Tunnel Coating can be washed with in excess of 200 Bar pressure if required. The above is using water jets (non-rotary tip) but please note if mechanical brushes are used these should be soft non-abrasive brushes.
