Lifetime Achievement Award.

I want to thank everyone involved in our WASC process. The Western Association of School and Colleges gives Santa Rosa High School our accreditation. Our accreditation proves to colleges and universities that the courses our students take and the grades they earn on their transcripts meet the highest level of rigor afforded to our students. The process can be a long and time-consuming, but the report itself and the discussions that have taken place have one main that we can all agree on: continuing to make our great school even better. We know that Santa Rosa High School is an incredibly strong academic school, and having the WASC process ensures that we will continue to be the best school available for our students and our school community. We are having a special WASC community meeting for students, parents, community members and staff members on April 19th in the Multi-Purpose room at 3:10 p.m. Please join us to review our WASC Progress Report and to provide feedback! Thank you to everyone that helped at Green Up day on March 11th. We had several volunteers—parents and students—helping clean up our campus. It was much needed and we couldn’t do it without you. Stay active and involved in your child’s education. Keep up communication with teachers and counselors. Ask your child if they are using their planner to keep organized. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep and eating healthy. Check their homework and reports. Take advantage of our free after school tutoring for all students.

A big THANK YOU to all who came out and helped with the STP Green Up Day! It was much needed and appreciated. Thank you to Marisa McCrea for organizing this event. Coach Paige Dumont brought the whole team to help! Thank you thank you!!

since Vietnam is his birth country. Good job Zachary!

Winter Sports scores now on twitter Congrats to Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys Soccer, and Wrestling for all earning @athletics_srhs spots in the North Coast Section playoffs! It was another great season for the winter sports teams as the programs continue their success. Next year Girls Soccer (also an NCS appearance this year) leaves the fall season and joins winter.

Spring Sports The final season of sports is well underway at SRHS: Baseball, Softball, Track and Field, Badminton, Swimming, Boys Tennis, and Boys Golf are all in the thick of North Bay League play. Come out and support!

To Play a Sport at SRHS in 2017-18 Students interested in participating in sport must pick up or print off an athletic packet from the main office or school website at the end of this school year or beginning of next school year. Some sports require a concussion baseline test before participation, which is conducted through the school, ask the coaches or AD for detail. Students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher in the latest grading period (8th grade matters for incoming 9th graders) unweighted, not cumulative, to participate, otherwise a waiver- a GPA between 1.4 and 1.9- form can be filled out (communicate with the coach and athletic director for more information). Additionally, a physical dated after June 1, 2017 will be required for any sport during next school year. If you attended a different high school at some point, you must pick up and fill out NCS paperwork, see the ADs for paperwork.

Physical Education Credit For those students interested in earning PE credit by playing a season of a school sport, the process and guidelines are as follows: Student-Athlete must not miss more than 10 days of participation, at the end of the season the Student-Athlete will receive the waiver form from his/her coach, then acquire the appropriate signatures on the form, and turn it into the Athletic Director for processing all within two weeks after the last regular season game. Forms turned in after that are concerned late and not accepted.

Scholarships Scholarship opportunities for student-athletes are available, get information from College Career Center or one of the ADs.

PAC (Panther Athletic Club) Becoming a PAC Member is an excellent way to support Panther Athletics! Thank you PAC! You can find more info at sporting events and in this Purr.

Jan Sofie, ArtQuest Director, [email protected], 528-6765 23rd Annual Spring Showcase Sanctuary on April 6th ! Just next week, the 23rd Annual AQ Spring Showcase takes the stage on Thursday, April 6th beginning at 6:30 pm in the SRHS Auditorium. Visual Fine Arts sophomore student Ian Rose’s piece was selected as the winning entry for this spring’s Showcase poster image suggesting the 2017 AQ theme, Sanctuary. Depicting a fairy-elfin character looking into a mysterious arched abyss and holding a remote control to a television in front of him, the scene is surrounded by a robust climbing vine and almost-dead trees. Ian’s work will be acknowledged at the Showcase and the other finalists’ pieces will also be on view. There will be Dance and Music performances, screenings of Digital Arts and Video Arts, Theatre Arts performances in the Black Box and the well-known large visual arts exhibition in the Multipurpose Room. Featured in the Auditorium part of the show will be recitations of the winning selections by the SRHS Poetry Out Loud top winners, all which were AQ students this year: Maya Humphreys (1st place), Micayla Walker (2nd place ), Emma Hughes (3rd place) and Halei Trowbridge (4th place). At press deadline, we are still developing details about how the evening will evolve, but make sure to come April 6th to see what we did! Don’t miss seeing what the AQ students have created this year with their remarkable imagination, technical skill and unique perspective. All are welcome and admission is free. If by chance you miss the Showcase night, the visual art exhibition will continue in the Multipurpose Room during school hours through Thursday, April 20th; check with the AQ Office or SRHS Main Office regarding specific viewing availability. NAHS Participates in The Memory Project: A Portrait of Kindness The ArtQuest and SRHS chapter of the National Arts Honor Society (NAHS) recently participated in “The Memory Project”, a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world that have been orphaned, neglected, or disadvantaged. This is the fifth year that NAHS participated in the project, with 24 student members of our chapter volunteering their time and talents to create portraits of children from the Ukraine this year. One of the goals is to ensure that both the children receiving the portrait gifts and the students creating the works will benefit from the experience. Since orphaned or neglected children usually have few personal keepsakes, the portrait also provides them with a special memory of their youth that honors their heritage and identity, helps them build a positive self- image, and allows them to actually see themselves as works of art. To make The Memory Project happen, the NAHS student artists received photos of the youth waiting for portraits and

A CALIFORNIA GOLD RIBBON SCHOOL 21 SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER APRIL 2017

ArtQuest continued then worked from those photos to create the works of art. When they are done, the portraits are delivered to the children as gifts and photos are taken of them receiving their portraits. These photos are sent back to the artists so they can see that special moment when the child received his or her portrait. “This project is a unique opportunity for our NAHS students to open their hearts to youth who have endured many hardships and to promote the value to our students of sharing kindness with others,” said NAHS Advisor and AQ VFA teacher, Ms. Brooke Delello. The Memory Project is one program of “My Class Cares”, a nonprofit organization with the mission to inspire youth to care deeply for the well being of people throughout the world and to be passionate about solving world problems and creating a better society for all. To do this, they coordinate The Memory Project and various other international service-learning programs in which youth enhance each others’ lives through innovative curricular activities. Special thanks to Friends of ArtQuest for their generous donation to the Memory Project to defray costs of the materials used and other associated costs to facilitate the implementation of the project and to help forge the vital connection to the international community. Photos from top to bottom: Gillian Kwok, of AQ Intermediate Video Arts, holds her portrait of Anastasia, one of the Ukranian children portrayed as part of the NAHS Memory Project. Eugen, a young boy in the Ukraine, was the subject for this painting by Lauren Cramer, Advanced AQ Visual Fine Arts student. Twin brothers, Kamrin Matlock and Tristan Matlock, both in Advanced Placement Studio Art, proudly show their pieces of Anastasia and Egor. Andrea Suarez, Advanced AQ Visual Fine Arts displays her Memory Project portrait of Bogdana.
