2013 de Falco Greco di Tufo DOCGproduct-timed-pdf - , Italy - 100% Organic & Natural

Why We're Drinking It

De Falco grows wine in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The dramatic landscape of these vineyards, cupped between a fiery heart and seaside embrace, imbues this wine with character to be found nowhere else in the world. An ancient Greek grape, the (appropriately named) Greco embodies the minerality of these volcanic soils around none other than the famed Mount Vesuvius. Here in de Falco’s organically farmed vineyard, Greco vines offer up clusters of golden orbs. Gently pressed, handpicked fruit ferments at low temperatures in steel vats. The marriage of ancient vineyard techniques and modern winemaking preserves the delicate floral character so painstakingly grown in the vineyard. The 2013 de Falco Grego di Tufo offers up fields flowers, succulent cactus fruit, and ocean mist with each sip. It’s the Italian view you need to taste to believe.

Why we love it:

Italian white wines present a compelling case for us to catch up some history and geography reading. De Falco produces wine in Italy’s Campania region. This region, visually, is the shin of the Italian boot-shaped peninsula. The name, Campania Felix, means ‘happy land’ in the original Latin. Wine and vine go back to the 12th century BC, earning this region “oldest region.” Greco vines came with the Greeks long enough back for the grapes to be aptly called “Greco Bianco,” or ‘white Greek.’ Though Campania is home to an overwhelming majority of the world’s Greco vines, these pale grapes take on special character in the vineyards surrounding the town of Tufo. Greco di Tufo claims the prize for most remarkable example of the grape. Armed with clean, fresh acidity and perfumed floral aromas, Greco wines reflect their special place in the world of Italian white wines.

If you thought this story couldn’t get more ancient or place specific, you would be wrong. The roots of de Falco’s Greco vines reach into some dramatic geological history: Mount Vesuvius. Infamous for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, this cratered volcano stands tall behind vineyards while the Bay of Naples gracefully washed before them. The 2013 de Falco Greco di Tufo is the penultimate expression of place. Rarified and beautiful, like the surrounding landscape.
